"Mass Psychosis in the U.S.-How Big Pharma got Americans hooked on anti-psychotic drugs"

Just saw this. A lot of what we already know, and some stuff we didn't. All very, very, angering... when will someone go after the REAL pill criminals? While narcotics clearly need control, aren't people sort of looking the other way when it comes to this kind of medication abuse?

*MODS, I almost put this in the Breaking News forum but decided that despite being a well-worded outsider's perspective, it was not breaking news per se, but obviously feel free to move it

If this is talking about doctors being the one's we need to worry about then yes that is true. Where do all of are pills come from before a street dealer? The pharmacy that doctors prescribe and to get the evil dollar. There are countless doctors out there that want there patients to get hooked or make them believe they need a pill to be normal because they get a lot of extra money for what they distribute. But doctors are people too, a lot of people would do this if they had the chance. Money makes us do the stupidest things because we need a lot of it to live a normal life these days in a world like this and just because having lots of money is an addicting feeling and getting it can be like chasing a drug for some.

Money doesn't make me do stupid things and money doesn't make anyone else do stupid things, people make themselves do stupid things....

As the saying goes..."guns don't hurt people, people hurt people"

By now, just about everyone knows how the drug industry works to influence the minds of American doctors, plying them with gifts, junkets, ego-tripping awards, and research funding in exchange for endorsing or prescribing the latest and most lucrative drugs. "Psychiatrists are particularly targeted by Big Pharma because psychiatric diagnoses are very subjective," says Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman, whose PharmedOut project tracks the industry's influence on American medicine, and who last month hosted a conference on the subject at Georgetown. A shrink can't give you a blood test or an MRI to figure out precisely what's wrong with you. So it's often a case of diagnosis by prescription. (If you feel better after you take an anti-depressant, it's assumed that you were depressed.) As the researchers in one study of the drug industry's influence put it, "the lack of biological tests for mental disorders renders psychiatry especially vulnerable to industry influence." For this reason, they argue, it's particularly important that the guidelines for diagnosing and treating mental illness be compiled "on the basis of an objective review of the scientific evidence" - and not on whether the doctors writing them got a big grant from Merck or own stock in AstraZeneca.

This is absolutely a fact, from personal experience. No doubt about it, this really is a conspiracy in the truest sense of the word, but one that involves not only the doctor and Pharma but also involves a willing consumer.

Americans are impatient... we want to feel better with the least amount of work possible. That usually results in expecting a pill to cure you. The hard work of resolving the underlying issue is not palatable to most. The doctor benefits, Pharma benefits, and the patient thinks they are benefiting. Perfect scam...

Pharmaceutical companies pay physicians big bucks for promoting and selling their drugs (physicians get a kickback). Also, the number of doctor visits have increased. Here's another site that includes statistics from a study conducted. www.jhsph.edu...

The cross-sectional study was a nationally representative sample of over 13,000 office-based psychiatry visits from 1996 to 2006. In addition to finding a general increase in number of medications prescribed, the study determined that number of office visits with two or more medications prescribed increased from 42.6 percent from 1996 to 1997 to 59.8 percent for 2005 to 2006. Visits in which patients received three or more medication prescription increased from 16.9 percent to 33.2 percent over the same period.

Unfortunately, there are those who don't always question it (addicts, elderly, the ignorant). This is a huge problem in the US.

Money is a false image to happiness, it acts as a drug in ways to people. The feeling of having it is overpowering so If we become dependent on it at times we don't always think about what were doing for it. So in a sense it has control over us by giving us the motivation of "get it at all means." This falls into greed. So when greed comes into play which is a very powerful take over, someone becomes not so much themselves anymore but a different person in how they think and do things. So there for when they do something for money its going to be their side of greed thinking for them, which was created from money..
Money changes people.
But that wasn't even my point, its that no matter a doctor or a drug dealer if someone see's a good opportunity to make money they will most likely do it so don't be surprised because were all only human, and we all have a greedy side.

Just another set of reasons not to seek help. I honestly believe that enlightenment is regarded as mental illness. Paranoia, depression, homicidal and violent tendancies have been a part of nature since the beginning. If you feel any of these things it is because the country is going down the crapper. They are real, and a pill is not going to help you. I refuse all medicine, and its modern american practitioners, because it is the safest option. Everybody should do the same.

I'll keep warning posters about their imminent psychosis when I spot them. I believe it is a big issue

In my life, I have been an interstate truck driver and a heavy metal guitarist. I've known many drug dealers, but the only "pushers" I have met are doctors.

Going to a doctor these days for a "checkup" is like taking your car in for a 1000 point safety check. They are always going to find something not quite perfect, and then offer their "help".

All it takes to get a prescription for antidepressants (and a mental illness diagnosis) is to tell a doctor that you are having a hard time coping at work.

Seriously.

As much as I think the nation is overmedicated, I would like to stress the point that not everyone abuses psychiatric medication. Mental illness is real, as is depression. I was on a low dose of fluoxetine (Prozac) for approximately 8 months; may have saved my life.

Prozac is a form of FLOURIDE.

Obviously, fixed you right up.

Or, how you learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.

Otherwise, quit wasting my time.

...you guys know that you can just say "no" when a doctor offers a prescription, right? There is absolutely nothing forcing you fill the prescription or take the medications.

i sure hope people know that lol.
But drugs are addicting and a lot of prescriptions people become dependent on them and think they cant be themselves unless they have the pill in their system.. It's all a money scheme ! just say no before your hooked.

I understand that some drug classes are addicting, but they aren't addicting before you ever take the first dose. If you have paranoid delusions about doctors trying to poison you or bilk you for money, then by all means, don't take any advice given to you by a physician.

i know most people believe the doctors and listen to them and do what they say because they think it's best for them when really natural medicines would be the way to go. People are just to small minded, they're opening up slowly though.

Except for the fact that "natural medicines" can't treat 99.99% of human disease.

What's the "natural medicine" for sickle cell anemia?

For lupus?

For Berger's syndrome?

For patent ductus arteriosus?

For paranoid schizophrenia?

For Lyme disease?

For meningitis?

These are just a few of the things I've treated in the past couple of weeks. Trying to treat any of these with a purely "natural medicine" approach would result in one thing: death. These are all potentially fatal conditions (some faster than others) with no room to play pretend by using "natural remedies" instead of actual, tested medicine.
