Connecticut becomes first state to mandate paid sick time

www.newsdaily.com

BOSTON, July 10, 2011 (Reuters) — Connecticut became the first state in the nation this month to mandate paid sick days for workers, a move advocates say could be a catalyst for similar campaigns in 20 other cities and states considering such a benefit.

This definately has its pros and cons..I believe that it will be abused, but on the other hand i know it can be a pain in the ass having to work sick because you really need the money.Im sure guidelines on this will be strict to limit the abuse, but businesses nowadays actually enjoy it when employees miss work, saves on weekly labor..Id love to read your opinions on this matter..please,post away.

This is in process in Missouri as well. Currently companies allow workers to build up sick time, but in order to use that sick time they must be ill for more than 3 days and must have a doctors note. The first 3 days are paid for by vacation pay and not sick time, and day 4 on is covered under sick time.

The law in the works will change that and force companies to allow people to use their sick time instead of vacation time. I need to go back and check to see if sick time is owned by the employee or employer. Currently if you leave a company they are required togive you your vacation time, but not sick time.

thanks,i was trying to figure out if this was going to be similar to PTO were you accumulate vacation time..If i can find conformation on this, then unexpected illnesses or emergencies will still go unpaid unless youve got enough time stacked..I would hope that this is how it will be,itll completely negate the abuse and allow you to keep accumulating vacation time without having to use it when youre sick.

I understand why companies have an issue with this, being a lot fo people abuse the system as it is. The thought process behind forcing PTO time to be used was to ensure the people were actually sick and not just wanting a paid day off.

However, I think companies have been abusing the system as well, coming up with more and more restrictions in order to use the sick time. Espceially the 3 days bit... How many times has a person been ill more than 3 days? They chose the perfect amount of time to force people to use their PTO.

Im contracted by the air force so wether im sick or not im still gettin payed.my contract includes 10 days vacation awarded to me every 6 months,i can take a vacation at any time but all 10 days must be used concurrently which i hate.Ive had normal jobs before as a minor and when i was 18,andI know that contracts dont last forever and im not always guaranteed a new one, eventually i will need a normal job,i do hope that arizona picks up on this sick pay stuff,it seems like an effective way to run things.

Being from a country in which, even during the dictatorship, the workers always had some benefits, I find this a little strange.

I have at work a book with the Portuguese labour laws, so I can make some comparisons.

Found out that there is no federal mandate for break times but I found this for Minnesota:

The Minnesota lunch and breaks laws are some of the vaguest statutes on the books. The law simply says that an employee who works 8 or more consecutive hours be given “sufficient unpaid time” for a meal break.

It's only a blog but was the first link that popped up on Google.

Just found the MN Dept of Labor site:

The state law requires employers to provide restroom time and sufficient time to eat a meal. If the break is less than 20 minutes in duration, it must be counted as hours worked. Time to use the nearest restroom must be provided within each four consecutive hours of work. Meal time applies to employees who work eight or more consecutive hours (see Minnesota Statutes 177.253, 177.254 and Minnesota Rules 5200.0120).

Another nail in the coffin to drive out business. A days work for a days wages? The welfare state is in full force.
Are there times when one is truly sick or needs to not work, of course, but the abuse of this law will not generate a dime to a business and send them away if they can.

Oh lunch breaks, you know thirty minutes to eat so you can actually function the rest of the day.
I never got breaks at anyplace but wal mart (it is a company policy there) other places I had to eat behind the cash register.

Yeah, Florida hasn't even got an ambiguous law for breaks there simply is none.
Even if you work outside in the heat (I know I did work at a carwash).

Being in CT, I would have much rather had protection from getting fired because I took unpaid leave because I was sick WITH PROOF OF DOCTORS VISIT(S) OR HOSPITALIZATION. Make the employer pay 1 years salary plus full family healthcare, plus all unemployment benefits availability for wrongful termination. Automatic. No need for a court appearance or lawyers involvement by either side except for showing up at the dept of labor for the state and file a 1 page claim WITH YOUR PROOF OF DOCTOR VISIT(S) OR HOSPITALIZATION.
