I'm sure this has been discussed on here multiple times, but being a newcomer...Does anyone have an explanation for their body not being able to sleep? Just curious...

I'm sure you sleep sometime, or you would pass out.

Obviously. I guess I am more implying the lack of "normal" sleep. When I do sleep...I wake up every 2 hours or so, like clockwork. Sleeping 6-8 straight hours just doesn't happen.

There are many reasons why your body doesn't want to sleep, i.e. caffiene, habit, even guilt... but turn to Fight Club for answers!

"With insomnia, you're never really asleep-
you're never really awake."
"You need healthy, natural sleep. Chew Valerian root and get more excercise."

So how long have you been having trouble sleeping? Do you only have trouble sleeping at night or during the day as well? Change in diet? Chemical imblance?
I go through sleep cycles...every few weeks I can only sleep a few hours a day then the next few weeks I sleep too much. Right now I'm in the no sleep cycle. When I'm awake I'm hyper and when I try to sleep my mind won't calm down. But I have chemical imbalance issues.

Maybe you're stressed out, or drank lots of coffee that day, or have insomnia. Do you have trouble sleeping almost every night or just every once in a while?

I hate sleeping though, insomnia doesn't sound all that bad
. Talk to a doctor and if you live in one of the fourteen states that has medical cannabis decriminalized, see if he'll write you a prescription, because from what I've heard it works better than any medication.

A few years ago I was taking xanax for depression and anxiety and I also couldn't sleep. Maybe your sleep problems are a side-effect of your meds? Have you talked with you doctor?

I've been through a recent spate of this.
Job anxiety, Mother in law moving in anxiety, Wife having undiagnosed illness anxiety.
Then...comes "will I get to sleep tonight anxiety"

I had to reboot......I took some time off. Stayed up for over 36 hours...Until a normal bedtime arrived.
And I slept....I set an alarm to 7 hours, as to not oversleep....

It's been ok so far.

My meds are actually not for psychiatric purposes... for medical reasons (kidney problems etc), and they shouldn't really have an effect on sleep. This has been an issue both when on meds and not on meds. But I realize medication can have a boat load of individualized side effects as well...not a fan of going to the doctor's but wise suggestion. Thanks. Did you change from xanax and find you were better able to sleep?

Times of heightened anxiety definitely exasperates the sleep deprivation...
I find if I really wear myself out (not sleeping, working 10-11 hour shifts, exercising) that I can actually sleep a solid 6 hours or so, here and there.
Everyone needs a "reboot" every now and then...glad you found a process that helped. Good luck with it continuing.

I have terrible trouble sleeping a lot of the time but it's hard to suggest the reason behind it. Sometimes I just may not be tired enough to sleep, even though I go to bed very late, sometimes it's hard to just 'switch off'.

One thing that helped me was getting a thicker, heavier duvet. I felt warmer and more secure. Are you comfortable at nights, physically, or do you ever feel insecure?

If you have feelings of not being safe whilst you sleep, it might help to go to bed early when you know other people in your household are up and about, and alert.

Something that might help you is a breathing exercise. Breathe in and hold the breath for the count of four, then breathe out and count to four before you breathe in again. Doing this several times generally helps to 'tip me over the edge'.

I'm hesitating to make this suggestion, but since it was a help to me, I'll say it anyway. I often thought that a lullaby would help me to sleep. Sadly for me, I had no-one daft enough to sing me to sleep
So I bought a kids' toy - a fluffy thing that played a lullaby. It worked, too. It was just the tune, no words, which was a good thing.

If this is too silly for you, you might consider playing some soft classical music to help you sleep.

if you remembered to do the breathing exercises every time you woke up in the night, or had the switch for the music within easy reach of the bed you might drop off more easily or even stay asleep for longer.

I had a long spate of sleepless nights recently, then one evening at about 7pm I just couldn't stay awake any longer and headed off to bed. I slept right through the night, too. With some luck, you may find that happens for you.

I hope you can find something to help you sleep, perhaps one of my suggestions will do the trick? It's a terrible thing to have to do without, good luck.

I had a very bad time on my meds and as a result ended up in ICU for a few weeks and died for a little bit. Not only did they almost kill me when I woke up I had holes in my memory and it took me the last few years to recover. So...now I just cope and I don't take any meds. I still have trouble sleeping.

Sleep is for those who need it.

Maybe you don't need it.

If that is the case, find something fun to do right now!

GO!
