123 Year Old Recording Recovered From Ancient Doll
A twelve second recording of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star from the first-ever talking doll could also be the first-ever commercial recording, historians are saying. The recently recovered recording, captured on a ring-shaped cylinder phonograph, was produced for Thomas Edison’s failed talking-doll business venture in 1888.

The recording eventually found its way to Jerry Fabris, museum curator of the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, who at first thought that the damaged, 123-year-old artifact was condemned to eternal silence. However, after attending a presentation on new 3-D scanning technology, Fabris brought the tin recording to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where an engineer named Carl Haber and another scientist successfully resurrected the audio.

Ok outside of being creepy looking [ I think all old dolls are creepy] I thought this was kind of cool. I wonder if they'll ever find out who actually recorded the message? I think it would be cool if they could track down the descendants and let them hear what their great great great gandsomething or other sounded like

Ok Actually that would be kind of creepy as well.

Here is what the phonograph for the doll looked like.

The doll cost 10-25 dollars in those days.

Here is the recording

Creeeepy! I definately think Edison made a great decision to switch to light bulbs. I think that it is a little sad though, he was just a bit too ahead for the time period. People these days love talking dolls. Tickle-Me-Elmo had people beating each other up in aisles of Wal-Mart to get the last one. Meanwhile, now there is a peeing baby on market for little kids to get their hands on... ok maybe the twinkle twinkle doll wasn't so bad...

Sleep is overrated, right?

Well between the doll itself (the look, the sound) & the Twilight Zone Talking Tina episode....

I'm probably all set with the sandman.

CREEPY!!!

Yucky. Eeeek!

Chucky's evil grandma.

LOL!! You weenies.... have a doll collecton .. keeps the wuss male burglars away.Particularly my ventriloquist ones.. and my favorite, an antique Charlie McCarthy AKA anti-home invasion device who sits in his own chair in my foyer.

Pretty cool doll and major kudos for the historical value of the post for us weirdo doll lovers.
My best one is a wind up musical antique china doll from Japan... but for EEEEK factor, I have 2 small antique dolls that we discovered in the upstairs insulation when removing it to put new in. The house is over a century old.. as were the dolls.
One is fully jointed, wooden, and has a china head. The other is the typical german made cloth and porcelain. Both nice on the creepy factor.

Not only does the doll look creepy, the recording sounds creepy:

To hear the recording for yourself – it’s honestly a little creepy – head over to the NPS website. via CNN
It does sound a lot like that creepy talking Tina doll in the twilight zone episode.

No wonder Edison's talking doll business failed!

A creepy doll collection would keep me away if I were a burglar.

Amazing how man started using sound and sound recordings.
The string instrument and chimes have been around first perhaps.
The idea of Edison using vibrations off a rotating object might have
been around since gears at least.

My mom collects dolls. I will have to show her this and no doll is scarier than the one from Trilogy of terror. They can sing as many creepy songs as they like....just dont move.
