I'm in NE UK and it's hammering down with rain at the moment. I work from my conservatory on the back of the house and something caught my eye through the window, it was a light in the sky, long and thin, almost looked like an airborne lightsabre. It looked blue-white to me. As it moved across the sky it stopped dead for a second or two before moving off again. It was very odd the way it just stopped like that - have to admit it spooked me slightly because it almost seemed it was aware it was being watched. The whole show didn't last long - it was visible for maybe four or five seconds before it disappeared behind some trees. I booted up my camphone and went outside to capture some footage but it was gone. I've never seen anything like it - there were no flashing lights you'd normally-associate with planes etc. Just a fast-moving very bright rod of light.
I'd normally discount such a sighting as "just one of those things" but two things piqued my interest;
1) It's raining with heavy cloud so the object was obviously BELOW cloud cover and therefore quite close.
2) I checked on ATS and Lo and behold, there have been other similar UK sightings.

Anyone else seen anything similar??

You're up late...it's almost 3am!

Did you manage to get a picture or video of it?

Nothing unusual to report here in the West Midlands......For now.

I'll certainly be keeping my phone switched on in future. I often work late so I'll be keeping an eye out.

How did you know I was from Brum?!

West Midlands means I could have been from Wolverhampton, Tamworth, or somewhere else...

Yes, this is very typical with the dozen or so UFO's I have spotted, they know when they are seen, it is very strange, they seem to always stop, or their lights brighten, then disappear really quick after they are spotted,or try to hide behind trees, mountains whatever. I have seen this myself and heard from other sighting cases about this very phenomena.

Just know, I believe you.

Peace,
Marriah

*dethduck strolls into the thread dragging along a rather large black box behind him labeled ' ATS Box-O-Panacea ' and commences to rummage about within it.
After some time he pulls forth a small glowing ball of light.
Taking this light he holds it aloft above his head in presentation to the forum before him and says...*

"CGI!
Case Closed!
Debunked!"

*With that, he returns the glowing ball back into its box, aborts HAARP's attempt to escape, gestures towards his signature at the part about ' not so serious ' and closes the ATS Box-O-Panacea back up.*

In all seriousness it doesn't matter.
If you posted the clearest or crappiest pic or vid, no one would believe it.
GEL would link her "commonly mistaken for" thread, thus coloring opinions of what you really saw. Even if you were to show that it wasn't any of those things, people will just tell you what you saw.
Everything posted here, and I mean everything, is judged as either CGI, rc plane/helicopter/kyte with lcds, chinese lanterns, balloons, CGI, sprites, ball lightening, photoshop, sky divers, jetliners, sundogs, satellites, the ISS or CGI.

This will be determined by one or a combination of the following methods.
a) the picture/still frame of video will be blown up until all you can see are blocky pixels.
b) the picture/still frame of video will have your basic posterize/solarize/emboss/sepia/red/blue/green filter will be placed over it. This will be called "analysis"
c) the picture/still frame of video will be opened up in MSPaint where circles and lines will be drawn over to prove...something.

Now if you are lucky enough to share a sighting with multiple other witnesses, all providing similar reports with multiple pictures and videos of said sighting from multiple angles and in multiple locations...
Well, that makes your own sighting that much more valid, right?
Not on ATS. In such situations, well, it's obvious. The must all be in on it together. It will always be dubbed a hoax conspiracy. Always.

All this happens in every thread with pictures and videos. Every single one.
And yet, if you make a post without media, everyone wants pictures and videos.
Right.

In a decade of visiting this site the only "sighting" I have ever seen given any credence at all was Roswell. A case with no first hand witness reports, no pictures, no videos. Nothing but a kneejerk report and retraction, plus the backing of the inimitable Mr. Stanton "Grey Basket" Friedman. So credible is he that everything without exception goes into his infamous "grey basket" but his own two cases that he made a career on, Roswell and the Hills' abduction.

I started this post making a bit of humor but the more I got into this the more it got me thinking. Posting a report to ATS is a pointless endeavor. There is no investigation here, serious or otherwise, no open minds and certainly no credibility lent out to anyone.

Where else can you post? MUFON? When has anything ever come of posting to MUFON?
There is a lack of and a need for a place to report sightings where serious consideration and investigation will take place, and ATS is not it.

Despite that it was the UFO & Aliens forum that brought me to ATS over a decade ago in the first place, it has become dead weight to these boards. It is an irrelevant and pointless forum no longer useful to anyone. It should be closed and archived. Since the posts within are all nearly immediately thrown into the ' Hoax' category what other purpose does it serve?

Wow dethduck....sounds like you need some cheerup meds!!

Bottom line, you dont need to visit this forum if it causes you so much angst. I agree with you that there a host of ' out there' threads these days but you can be sure some are real gems here...its just we dont know it. Yet.

Like the youtube vids, you can be sure that some genuine UFO vids have been posted here but we wont ever know it for certain because nobody has touched one or even gotten close.
Sigh...its sorting the wheat from the chaff that counts. In our own minds at least.

Heh, not angst, just thought tinged maybe with a bit of cynicism.

Oh, I don't doubt that at all. Problem is they will never be viewed as anything but when posted on ATS.

Like the youtube vids, you can be sure that some genuine UFO vids have been posted here but we wont ever know it for certain because nobody has touched one or even gotten close.

And there lies the problem with posting on ATS. No matter how genuine or flaky and fake any video or picture, be it youtube or otherwise, everyone is summarily dismissed without any serious consideration or investigation, often with the same few "answers" applied time and again. Thus, the Box-O-Panacea. It's a continuing case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. The must ridiculous part is no one is ever willing to just say, "I don't know."

Great post, thanks Dethduck! I agree entirely, and I joined for the same reason. Never really see the point in posting though, mainly due to the flack others get for telling their story. After this thread and the "UFO Portsmouth UK..." by Avriel... well, I can't resist

The 'fluorescent tube' type of sighting has been common here in the NW UK for the last couple of years - made the local press a couple of times anyway (seem to remember a thread about sightings in Morecambe/Heysham a wee while ago?). Exactly as described by Avriel, the sightings are usually on the coast (mainly over Heysham Power Station) and usually last a few days, we’ve seen them a couple of times over the last two months.

Like so many others that step outside for a smoke or let the dog/cat out, I do the same every night, and I’d be surprised if I didn’t see something that’s blatantly unexplainable in a month. The sky view from the back of our house takes in an area of (rough guess) 20 miles south and 10 miles east and west – the most common sighting here is the ‘red lights’ that join/split up, and cover the distance of our view in a few seconds.

Someone said they disappear when you think they have seen you? Yeah, sounds crazy, but I’d agree, and the other way round too – we were watching the fast red orbs last summer (common sight is 5 red and 1 white) – one night it lasted about twenty minutes, but with a difference; they have always been completely silent, but on this night as they flew around in crazy patterns (the flight usually covers the whole sky area that we can see, so it’s big!) they made a noise that had my wife in tears – a sound that was a cross between music and bird sounds, weird, but it really upset her.

That night we talked about the possibility of them slowing down so we could get a better look, and say ‘hi’. As soon as we talked about this, four of the red lights slowed down and came towards us (but still very high in the sky), we said ‘hi’, admitted we were scared sh**less, and they went on their way again.

We’ve talked with our son and neighbour about them (they have seen them too), and talked about taking pics – always with the same conclusion; what’s the point? As you’ve said Dethduck, there’s no point here on ATS – unless you’ve seen them and you’re 100% sure they can’t be explained (so they are UFO’s), it’s understandable no-one is going to believe you. It’s easy for us, we’re grandparents, there’s no ‘proving’ to be done for anyone, if they want ‘proof’, maybe take up smoking, buy a dog, or just look up more often! ;-)

Cheers

Rest assured that it's not just in the UK. Here in New England I have seen those exact same things and have had similar if not exactly the same experiences more times than I can count. In the last three years moreso than the previous 30 plus. I chalk that up to the fact, though, that I'm outside every half hour stargazing during a smoke break more since taking this post.

That's. Cool. I saw a ufo that also came from behind trees in southern california looked to me like an invisible flying wing not a triangle just two big amber lights, zig zagged which airplanes don't do. Then the right light turned off and then the left then vanished. Looked like it wanted to be hidden and appeared to be infront of my neighbors house. On a partly cloudy night @ 1030pm pst
