Secret Service investigates hacking of Fox News Twitter account

www.latimes.com

The Secret Service said Monday it would investigate the hacking of Fox's political Twitter account over updates falsely claiming that President Obama had been assassinated.

Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie said the law enforcement agency, whose job it is to protect the president, would look into the false postings and "conduct the appropriate follow-up."

This is an interesting situation for sure, it wasn't but a few weeks ago that Rep Weiner claimed his twitter was hacked!

We know the outcome of that particular situation..

This is different? How so? Since it's not an individual feed, but a network twitter feed, are they more susceptible to a breach?

I don't know, I don't use twitter though I have an account, and if you have seen me tweeting in the past few weeks, it's not me

This is great. I for one would like to know if they really were hacked, or if it was a FNC staffer playing jokes.

I think the difference is that it involves the president directly in relation to an assassination. If I were in the Secret Service, I'd view it as a potential threat.

NO disagreement there, I am interested to see the outcome considering the reports that Weiner's twitter account hack ( while a mistruth ), was brushed aside as an improbability, could make a 180 degree turn in a matter of days...

Someone proving a point as to Twitter's security?

Why is the Secret Service investigting? Can't they tell the difference between a threat and an obvious joke?

If I were the president I would be deeply concerned that such a bunch of complete idiots who are wasting their time investigating harmless stupid jokes were responsible for my security.

If FOX news is saying it I always tend to doubt what they are saying is true. Dont forget that:

"in February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed in a case against ex-employees, with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.

Lawyers for Fox News successfully argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves.

Call me crazy but I believe this could possibly be a gauge to test how people would react if Obama was assassinated. If the result is favorable and divisive enough TPTB will use it. a "clinical study" one could say.

You know, when an organisation can argue sucessfully that lies and falsehoods are acceptable fare for the public to consume, it seems to me that the rule of law has no meaning. Justice has been left in tatters, beaten raped and scarred at the side of the road, and law , with bloody knuckles, wet in the pants, and holding the knife, gets away with it, through a silver tongue, and a nice suit.

With regards to the Fox News Twitter hack, although it does not concern me in the least that Fox has been accessed by someone, the content of the messege left by these hackers is quite legitimately concerning. However it could be that the hack and the messege are more a propegandist tool, rather than a dire warning. That said the very fact that someone is prepared to leave that kind of statement around , for any reason should result in an investigation of a robust and thorough sort.

It would however be a great waste, if it turned out that the hacker who left this messege was just a lone , disaffected youth with a white supremacist background and nothing to do with his computing degree or something of that nature.

So anyone of the opinion that maybe this wasn't a hack but Fox up to their old antics? There is a video of Foxnews talking about the Bin Laden raid and they put a type written message onto the screen replacing Osama with Obama, now a lot of people verbally mix these two names up but Fox did it in writing on the screen and it stood up for a while and no one seemed to notice. So maybe this hack is more than just a hack, maybe it's the sneaky execs at Fox taking advantage of the recent hacking craze.. Maybe not, but it's something to think about. But I'm sure it's just a joke, this is Fox news right, you can trust them. Fair and balanced.

In the world of security, nothing is an obvious joke, and nothing should be treated as one.

Personal protection - especially in relation to VIP's/Heads of state - can't allow for assumptions. Be it an implied threat - or an actual one - the whole issue needs to be investigated.

I see no humor in this; and didn't Joe Biden just get a twitter account? Weird.

Who in their right mind would joke about something like that knowing all the security measure that have been assembled over the last 10-11 years? This dumb s--- can send you to prison.

Whats the point? Is this a false flag to help push censorship of public "free" expression? Maybe.

They are tracking all HTTP/email traffic and spying on everything that's worth spying on.
