Am I the only one who has trouble celebrating a holiday that has lost its meaning? A holiday that is now about consumerism, and where the majority of the people know zero about the historical relevence of this day? Furthermore, does anyone realize the irony of celebrating a day that not only they don't understand, but that represents an event that might as well not have occured?

My hubby was saying that today it seemed like everyone was trying to make it a Memorial Day II.
I got what he meant - every thing I heard was about the troops, support the troops, thank you for your service, yadda yadda.
Now we are both veterans ourselves. I'm not saying that's not the right thing to do, but Independance Day is supposed to be about freedom from tyranny and taxation without representation and 1776 and "We hold these truths to be self-evident' and all that.

4th of july is the best holiday. For years ,they use to run an all weekend planet of the apes marathon.Mysteriously, this channel has ceased too show the marathon on the 4th of july weekend.I think this warrants further investigation.

Sad, but probably true.
The Schools teach very little "real history" anymore. A condition that has been getting steadily worse.
S&F!

It's totally about consumerism now. Buy this and buy that or you're not patriotic.

While at a stop light, a man approached with a sign that said "Honk if you love you country." This was late at night in a residential neighborhood, so obviously I didn't oblige. To which I got the response "you hate your country!"

Haha I actually find it funny because if I found it sad I'd go mad.

So I just call it Dependence Day in hopes someone figures it out.

This video is the PERFECT reason America needs to be put back into the stone ages....

The people living inside its borders could care less of who's blood had been drawn for their independence from oppression..

On the other hand America is in a worse position now than it was then.

This is coming from an American saddened from the oblivious people surrounding me..

My god don't you have to know this stuff to graduate.....

The Fourth Of July Has No Meaning Anymore, the very thing we supposedly 'Broke Away From' and 'Gained independence' is probably worse in today's age then ever

I Pledge Of Allegiance To No Flag for no flag would pledge Allegiance to me

The whole independence week has become nothing but an excuse for people to get drunk and blow things up. As I am typing this I have had 3 hours of sleep per day for 5 days. My ear is ringing and hurts. The smoke has created an asthma like condition in me. I am going to the DR next week but still I feel bad yet the noise is to loud. I am not sure why this is not considered disturbing the peace.
I wander if people even realize that fourth of july is only ONE day not a whole week. We do not have true freedom. Sure we are freer than other countries but people can get arrested for yelling at people to tell them to stop. The ironic thing was I called the police on the people doing fireworks;they called the police on me. I was threatened that if I yelled again I could get a disturbing the peace voilation but the police just left after talking to me. IT was very unreasonable because they never talked to the ones actually breaking the law.
Sad when I have a huge headache and very tired. Those people spoil the holiday. What ever happened to my right to enjoy the fourth of July?

I've had no problem celebrating the 4th of July up until this year. Now that I know the NWO is in control of our government and most world governments, that they staged/helped bring about 9/11, murdering thousands of Americans to make the rest of the people support criminal wars, and that they are creating the criminal TSA in order to control Americans, who will ultimately be the real enemy -- there is very little left to celebrate. This isn't America, it's not the America I believed in as a child, not the America I learned about in school. This is not the America of our founding fathers. Freedom is all but dead. What's to celebrate? The nostalgia of what I wish the country still was?

Yup. All I'll ever remember about July 4th are the fireworks, which has lost all meanings except make loud noises. That's business and the city won't profit from citing people having fun ILLEGALLY at home.

I was thinking of this same very thing few hours ago at work in retail management, and on way driving home from work.4th of july has lost its meaning, it feels, to corporate america. corporate america has killed it, via greed, outsourcing, and cheap breakable of quality items. when i was a kid, in the early to mid 80's, we always had a small parade go downt he street, horse n buggy, fire engines, as any kid would love, small tables set up selling semi overpiced novelty items, worth it though...made in america* It feels like thier isnt much of anything to really celebrate anymore, now those lcoal parades are gone, no thanks to corporate-greedy wanna be mayors* they call it, saving money* but in reality, cutting $40,000 of something from the public, an allowing the police to get massive overtime via taxpayers money...as an example greedy* or to re develop 'downtown' to bring in more corporations, costing millions, vrs. the $40,000 for a celebration...somethings DEF wrong . its like, its too good forthe tax payers and public cut it.
4th of july too me, at heart and inside, means freedom and birth fo the declaration in independence. a new free non socialist goverment has been established, that is supposed ot judge and reward fairly and freely. now all it (government) seems to do these days, is take take take..more for me and less for you( us). and expanding whereever possible via force or shady business deals violating the immediate trust of the public*

I look at it as celebrating what the country will hopefully become. I do not feel hope is lost.

I think if every one in this thread took this day to realize they are the change that needs to happen, the day can once again attain its former meaning. Many may be "oblivious" but not all, obviously. That makes it all the more important for those who are wanting a different world to lead the way with their actions in every day life, to create a new foundation for society to be built from the ground up, instead of "trickling down." There are many ways to build a nation, but I think a fear-based system like this has proven itself to be ineffective (to say the least). Thanks noonauts, for that view.

Exploitation instead of innovation drives the world into a profit-driven frenzy. However, as consumers, we technically hold the reigns once the numbers tilt the scales. What needs to happen is independence from corporations and independence founded on the collective abilities of the community. The people need to change on a large enough level to shake those foundations, which takes time and work. But if we dont start it ourselves, how can we ever hope to see things go in that direction?

Who would you rather "work" for, a faceless corporation, or the people around you?
