Over and over again I've been seeing posts from people about all the wonderful things the internet hacktivist group Anonymous does to "take the fight to the man" and "stand up for our freedom of speech". And it really upsets me everytime I see something like that. I can't tell if people are grossly misinformed or just so desperate for a hero that they'll stand behind anyone willing to step up to the plate.

First of all, let's examine AnonOps by their very definition. They are a loosely held together organization of children, adults, and criminals with no clear hierarchy attempting random attacks on whomever they think will help to further their own goals (however unclear those goals may be). Their "mascot" is Guy Fawkes, a famous terrorist from the 1600's who attempted to blow up Parliament. They have a catch phrase or signature that they commonly use which is so ridiculously cheesy it could only have been written by a child or George Lucas. And lastly, the group is commonly associated with 4chan, a website typically used for the trading of child pornography.

Most notable about this is that ANYONE can join. Literally anyone on earth. Hannibal Lecter could join the group if he wanted and people, in their blind support, would say "Go Hannibal! You da man! Show TPTB who's boss!"

So if you aren't already rethinking your support of this group with dubious motives, means, and members, you should be.

Next, let's examine some of the things they've been involved in. All of these have been taken directly from this site

The Anonymous hacking group has been active in Spain again and on Sunday managed to take down the www.movistar.es site. They also launched an attack on the www.telefonica.com domain although that appears to have been unsuccessful. Movistar.es was taken down for about half an hour at 5pm – the time it took for the company to put up a mirror site. Anonymous had announced its intentions earlier in the week, saying they came in protest at the ‘massive sackings’ and ‘censure’ at Telefónica. Telefónica has plans to lay off 6,500 workers in Spain. This latest attack comes two weeks after the police arrested three people accused of being the administrators of chat rooms where the denial of service attacks were coordinated against the Ministry for Culture, SGAE copyright organisation and the Junta Electoral among others.

Oh that's really nice. A business has to lay people off and they get attacked for it? I didn't know that was a huge offense. Imagine if your business started doing poorly and you had to let an employee go and someone threw bricks through your window for it.

Anonymous impedes free speech
Some of you may have heard of the famous "Westboro Baptist Church incident". If you haven't, essentially Anon decided they didn't like their gay-bashing and assaulted their website. Certainly that was just a onetime, fringe group sort of thing right?

Oh wait....

Oh yeah that's right. They also attacked a neo-nazi group. Meh, I'm sure that first amendment thing was just a formality anyway. They just put it in their to appease the Liberals

My favorite of all time is THIS story.
In this one, our beloved freedom fighters harass a little girl to tears because she refuses to take off her clothes on camera. She totally had it coming. DOWN WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT!

And who could forget the PSN service attacks which left many users without access to the playstation network for nearly a month? Though Anonymous denies actually making the attacks, they are to this day the only group that had any motive and anyway they wouldn't know if it WAS them, as anyone can claim to be Anon.

Which brings me to the last point, what are these constant DDos attacks actually accomplishing? They don't seem to be doing anything other than giving the government a good reason to crack down on the internet and create new internet censorship laws and causing a few IT guys to stay late fixing the problems they caused. I'm not saying they wouldn't do this regardless, but Anon sure is making their job easy.

I won't tell you who you should or shouldn't support, but do a little research before you tout Anon as the voice the world needs.

I'm one hundred percent in favor of internet privacy, but supporting internet terrorists is the wrong way to go about it.

Well I will say they had a rocky start but as of late they have been doing pretty well about going after our problems in this world. Anonymous started as a small group but has grown to something much bigger... and I believe the actions of anonymous will only 'mature' as time goes on and the group expands.

What a ridiculous statement. I don't need a bunch of pedophiles standing up for my rights. I can do just fine on my own.

Over and over again, I see people misquoting, assuming and ultimately failing to define anonymous.

First of all, let's examine AnonOps by their very definition.

Yes, let's.

They are a loosely held together organization of children, adults, and criminals with no clear hierarchy attempting random attacks on whomever they think will help to further their own goals (however unclear those goals may be).

Did you insert the word criminal to justify your opinion or what?

Their "mascot" is Guy Fawkes, a famous terrorist from the 1600's who attempted to blow up Parliament.

Actually the mask is based on the film / graphic novel of V for vendetta. But the mascot is generally the 'suit' symbol. Yes, the V symbol was based on Guy fawkes, but Guy Fawkes was never labelled a terrorist. An anarchist maybe, or someone who opposes tyranny. What's wrong with that?

They have a catch phrase or signature that they commonly use which is so ridiculously cheesy it could only have been written by a child or George Lucas.

Which is what? You must have been so angry, you forgot to write the phrase?

And lastly, the group is commonly associated with 4chan, a website typically used for the trading of child pornography.

lol (genuine lol) - you do realise 4chan users PUNISH people who post such crap?

Most notable about this is that ANYONE can join. Literally anyone on earth. Hannibal Lecter could join the group if he wanted and people, in their blind support, would say "Go Hannibal! You da man! Show TPTB who's boss!"

Hannibal Lecter is fiction.

You didn't ask why?

Oh that's really nice. A business has to lay people off and they get attacked for it? I didn't know that was a huge offense. Imagine if your business started doing poorly and you had to let an employee go and someone threw bricks through your window for it.

Why is the business doing poroly? State of the world economy perhaps? The corporate greed?

Oh yeah that's right. They also attacked a neo-nazi group. Meh, I'm sure that first amendment thing was just a formality anyway. They just put it in their to appease the Liberals

First amendment? So you can accuse people of being paedo's, liberals and cry because they're not following your American constitution. Have you consider that maybe Anon consists of non-Americans, who are sick to the back teeth of conservatives, fascists and Oligarchs?

The rest of your rant is typical conservative nonsense. Go back to reading your daily mail, eating your GM food and licking the twitching rear end of the corporate dictatorship.

Are you suggesting zero members of Anonymous are criminals? Or that internet terrorism isn't a crime? I know that DDos attacks are

Ahh I see, I guess you only try to blow up parliament as a practical joke. Certainly not to achieve a goal or possibly terrorize them.

Which is what? You must have been so angry, you forgot to write the phrase?

Excuse me for assuming your lazy ass could use google.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.

lol (genuine lol) - you do realise 4chan users PUNISH people who post such crap?

Oh yeah, because you can easily ban people when everyone's tag is "Anonymous"

Hannibal Lecter is fiction.

Herp derp.

Why is the business doing poroly? State of the world economy perhaps? The corporate greed?

Doesn't matter, nothing gives you the right to attack a business unless they're doing something illegal. Which they weren't.

First amendment? So you can accuse people of being paedo's, liberals and cry because they're not following your American constitution. Have you consider that maybe Anon consists of non-Americans, who are sick to the back teeth of conservatives, fascists and Oligarchs?

Then keep it in your own backwater country and I won't care. But when the attacks spill into the United States, I can involve any of the amendments I want.

As a closing question: are you a real person? Or some kind of ignorant robot designed in a secret lab somewhere to be as uneducated and misinformed as possible?

Lastly, I noticed you skipped over the complete terrorization of a little girl.

Anon takes on the Federal Reserve, & others, but more importantly they want the American people, & the rest of the world to stand up for themselves. Anon will show the world what we already know. They are outing the bad guys, bringing them into the light for all to see. No duh anyone can join, well join the revolution. They are the spark to our soon to be fire. It's really up to us if they're successful or not

I agree with what you and others have said, it's nice when Anon does something where the bad guys actually get what they deserve. But like a bomb going off in a crowd, they generally take down innocent bystanders as well.
Additionally, this kind of vigiliantism shouldn't be tolerated. Personally, I don't want to have my voice represented by a group that is so misguided and shady

Hey it seems that you are thinking of anonymous as this.

We [Anonymous] just happen to be a group of people on the internet who need — just kind of an outlet to do as we wish, that we wouldn't be able to do in regular society. ...That's more or less the point of it. Do as you wish. ... There's a common phrase: 'we are doing it for the lulz.

Which although was a part of anonymous at first.. it is not what anonymous stands for. This was lulzsec. and all those things that you named were started because of these members.

Use google, you just insulted me and called me Lazy. Obviously anything I will say - you'll disagree with so...

Are you suggesting zero members of Anonymous are criminals? Or that internet terrorism isn't a crime? I know that DDos attacks are

No. Because like you said anonymous can consist of anyone. Criminals, lawyers, doctors, students, even yourself.

Ahh I see, I guess you only try to blow up parliament as a practical joke. Certainly not to achieve a goal or possibly terrorize them.

Did I say it was a practical joke?

Excuse me for assuming your lazy ass could use google.

Excuse me for simply not copying and pasting from google and reading half-arsed and ultimately biased anti-anon diatribes.

Oh yeah, because you can easily ban people when everyone's tag is "Anonymous"

erm... digg.com...

Herp derp.

You're using a 4chan meme and then attacking 4chan? Are you sure you`re not trolling?

Doesn't matter, nothing gives you the right to attack a business unless they're doing something illegal. Which they weren't.

Yes it does matter. But you're obviously too self-engrossed in your own agenda to give a damn?

Then keep it in your own backwater country and I won't care. But when the attacks spill into the United States, I can involve any of the amendments I want.

It's spilling onto the internet , not your country. Do you even know what the internet is? Are you the defender or the US or something?

As a closing question: are you a real person? Or some kind of ignorant robot designed in a secret lab somewhere to be as uneducated and misinformed as possible?

Yes and no. You?

Lastly, I noticed you skipped over the complete terrorization of a little girl.

Oh the thing with 4chan? Not anonymous. So you're saying you're against child porn, but you'd much prefer the internet to be filled with underdressed 11 year old girls? Do you even know why this event occured?

You may need to re-educate yourself.

Mr L

About every month or so there is some new story about how Anon is going after X.
Where are all the stories about how Anon took down x?

Jw is it still pedophilia if some 14 year old boy is getting pictures of a 14 year girl cause in all likeliness this is what is going on.

They are still taking down all these companies and organizations? Why do most of the stories seem to have concluded with "after a few hours the website was back up" and that is about it. What do you know?

Only if those 14 year olds suffer from a severe disease that has stunted their growth at prepubescent levels.

Fair enough.
I think it's fair to say that neither of us has proof one way or the other, so perhaps I was a bit off in that statement. But I think it's still important that the information be out there so people can at least digest it and come to their own conclusion.

I agree completely. No good seems to be coming from it. But here in the US Anon is regularly cited in proposed internet censorship laws. As such, it appears to be a huge detriment to say the very least
