I've seen the exact same UFO out here in California!
It would hover waaaay up in the sky, looking like a satellite or a distant planet.
But it was bright red/orange and it would slowly drift around the sky and turn around, etc.
I've seen it two nights so far

Not sure if its the same thing but, a good few years ago (at a guess I'd say 1995 in North Yorkshire UK) I saw something similar to your description of the colour you describe, bright red/orange, there were fireworks going off nearby but this was very different from fireworks or regular lights as it had no corona to it, the colour and light just stopped at the edges.
I was driving a car at the time and thought it could be a reflection but someone else in the car with me spotted it and mentioned it before I said anything, it was still there after I opened he window so the reflection was definitely out.
Later found out that a few others had seen it.

I think I saw too from east central Iowa. But what I was a bit different. What I saw was a very bright orange light lifting from the horizon and rising straight up. I was facing directly south. At first I thought it was a helicopter but the light continued to slowly rise for about 3 or 4 minutes then simply began to fade and flickered out high in the sky. I tried to record it on my phone but apparently the camera wasnt good enough to pick up the light in the distance. After about 5 minutes I saw it or another again. Just the same rising straight into the sky and then fading away. I thought it was some sort of illuminated balloon but very bright. If in fact this was the same orange lights being seen in Missouri then I think I could rule out balloons.

Is there any reason that this could NOT be a Chinese lantern?...

I hate even using those words, but that's what it looks like in the video. I know that things can look entirely different to the naked eye than when filmed, so.....

I believe that is what I saw. But the OP talks about his/hers moving in multiple directions. The two that I saw simply went up and possibly to the right a bit (easily air flow).

Reads like it could have been a signal flare or sky lantern. It probably doesn't need to be said, but it isn't very unusual to see either at this time of year.

That was seen in a part of Missouri far away from me.

Also not to sound to hill billy like but the area we were at it is doubtful anyone there has even heard of one of those. If you knew anything about the county you would understand.

I am not saying it is not though. Is it normal for them to go above the cloud cover?

What I seen was lit up longer than a signal flare and different in color.

As for a lantern being the area I was in it is doubtful.

Sure it could. However, seen in three different spots in Missouri?

As I mentioned in another post I thought this at first as well. I also thought about the area I was in at the time. Not to make the place sound bad or anything but a doubt more than a few have ever heard of such a lantern. I really cannot describe the place in words you just have to see it and meet the people there.

I want to add to those mentioning the lantern idea.

Yes I thought this as well. However, the movement was faster later on as it changed direction. It was slower at first and it's speed increased as it started to head in what I believe is a northeasterly direction.

As it moved further away it also moved higher and moved behind the clouds and then was pretty much gone.

Also there is the idea that the area I was in the likelihood of such a lantern is very slim.

lanterns can be observed to change speed, direction of motion, and altitude because of changing wind conditions. Atmospheric motion is complex. Changes in motion can appear especially pronounced when you overestimate the distance to the lantern. Note: it is not possible to estimate its distance unless you know its size.

Also there is the idea that the area I was in the likelihood of such a lantern is very slim.
It would only take 1 other person. Are you saying you are the only one in the whole vicinity who knows what a sky lantern is?

One time I was out stargazing, and this really bright light was hovering about 30 degrees above the horizon. It was blue, and as I said it was intensely bright. There was no noise and no blinking lights. It appeared to drift back and forth slightly. After watching it for a while, it appeared to be growing larger and change color. I was getting pretty excited, and thought what is this? There is no way this is an airplane, that's for sure.
It turned out it was an airplane.
If I hadn't got a close look at it as it passed directly overhead, maybe I would never have been able to identify it.

My point is you shouldn't get too excited about a light in the sky. You can't rule out the possibility that you are viewing a mundane thing under new or unusual circumstances. If it is rare to see sky lanterns in your area, then presumably you aren't experienced in identifying them, as I wasn't experienced viewing an airplane from head on as it was preparing to land because I don't live near an airport.

Also, about it being viewed in three separate locations: I wouldn't be surprised if sky lanterns were viewed in 100 various locations in the US during a single night, especially near a holiday associated with putting lights in the sky.

I am guessing you did not read my first post in this thread.

I am not excited, I am saying the light was strange, and acting differently than one I have seen prior to this.

As for the area, no I am not saying I am the only one who has heard of such lanterns I am saying I doubt more than a few have. Trust me on this you have to know the area and the people there.

Personally I would believe it to be some form of rocket (homemade type) before I would believe it would have been alien (not really a believer in the "we are visited by other beings" type of thing). As for a flare of any type no chance of that. A lantern is possible as it was my first thought. Again though it seemed to act differently than I believe it should have. I am not claiming to be an expert and believe there is a reasonable explanation I do not however feel a lantern is it. You can scream lantern all you wish I on the other hand feel it was not a lantern.

Keep a check each evening to see if this continues. The ships frequent and observe areas that are having or going to have something major happen, they record everything.

The Rivers near the Arc of St. Louis where do they meet? just curious!

I got a video of three similar objects on the 4th of July that hovered for at least an hour. The light would be bright and then disappear and re illuminate in the sky. It's on my cell phone, and i have no idea how to upload it..

To original poster and other people that saw something over the weekend. I accidentally stumbled upon a video that was shot in PA that shows similar lights except in a triangular formation.
www.youtube.com...

Since I live in PA, I was inclined to look through the MUFON site to see if other people around here were seeing things. Sure enough about 90% of the people that reported to MUFON saw similar orange/red lights in the US. Sometimes in a triangular formation and sometimes not.

I find this really interesting. Seems odd that so many people saw the same thing during the same time span across the US.
Look for yourself and make sure when you search the map that you select the dates from July 3 - 5th.
Some people posted pictures and videos as well.

Maybe they are lanterns??

I am afraid you saw what is commonly referred as "party balloon" - i have seen them multiple times. For the longest time (years), i was really convinced they were UFOs.

They are orange/dark orange glowing, silently moving/hovering..and can also show "erratic" movement due to the wind blowing them around.

Those are small balloons which have a fire underneath them, thus the intense orange glow. The fact that you saw them on a weekend just makes it more evident they were party balloons.

I myself saw them also already "flying in formation"...eg. lined up etc...people letting a few of them go..looking very impressive...but party balloons nevertheless.

Sorry to disappoint.

I saw a similar object july 4th after the fireworks died down. Took a video with my ipad put it on youtube. My channel is TheMrAlnorBelmont. Go check it out. The object/light was a good 3 times larger than what it is in the video so it has caused the video to draw skepticism but i know what i saw.

I saw a pair over Alliance Nebraska around the 2nd or 3rd... at first they slowly cruised at around 1,500-2,000 feet headed NNW then they slowly sped off to points of light and poof just gone... a friend on Facebook reported the same thing in Illinois a day later...
