This is a crazy idea. I don’t know that they are actually building them, but we didn’t see their stealth fighter until it was on the runway. However, the carrier would seem to be vulnerable to air attack from missiles and they would lose all the aircraft as well. Another thing that I thought of is, did they get the idea from the US? I was recalling the incident in the Pacific off California back in the late 90’s where a fishing boat had suddenly been spotlighted by a huge football field triangle shaped craft. They shot at it and a black helicopter came down from on top and opened the door and they took photographs of the boat. And another case where a triangle craft, which are claimed to be football field in size, was shot at and a hatch opened up on the bottom and a crew member yelled down, “Quit shooting at us”. And finally an incident where a hunter saw one fly over and with his scope looked at it and saw the familiar arrow with ‘Rescue’ on it. I got the idea these may be dirigible type helicopter carriers, and have our stealth helicopters on the top. They would have to only fly at night or satellite probably would have taken photos of them by now. Well, maybe not if they have been using the same LCD screen technology displaying ground facing cameras on the top and sky facing cameras on the bottom. I just know China has been stealing our technology for so long that this idea would be unusual to just come up with out of the blue. Their stealth technology is the same thing in my opinion. And our stealth F117 was flying since the 80’s. That would indicate we have something far more advanced. But, helicopter carrier is one thing, I don’t know if you could carry the tonnage required for an aircraft carrier with the same concept. Ocean going AC’s have to store fuel and munitions, plus maintenance bays, food, and a large contingent of people (5,000+) to operate an airport at sea. In the air, it would require so much fuel it would not be efficient. And nuclear reactors need water to cool them. Anyway, strange photos that were in a Chinese article.

Its a fun idea. Reminds me of cloud-base from the old 1960s Captain Scarlet show. Barring massive breakthroughs in power generation and some form of gravity manipulation tech it wont be happening.

More importantly, if you do have those things you don't need to use them as a base for conventional aircraft. Conventional combat aircraft are redundant at that point.

Force field plasma protection.

Didn't Tesla invent a force field? Of course the ancient aliens left behind a bunch of force field generators that we aren't allowed to see right now... Roswell also left us with a bunch of cool stuff... and also HAARP.

Yeah, that air-aircraft carrier wouldn't last too long without some sci-fi protections.

Yes yes Tesla AC. I wouldnt be suprised since I already think this technology has been reversed here and used for off world business. Good point

I wonder what the advantages of something like this would be to the water type?

Seeing that we use water carriers for small wars all the time I wonder how or if this would be better, if even possible right now. Either way, I would love to see one in person, it looks amazing even in a rendering.

we were desinging airborne carriers before ww2 the akron and they macon successfully launched and retrieved fighter craft but they were blimps not what looks like a freaking space ship....lets say they do have this or are working on it where are they building it? wouldnt they have to hide it from pretty much everything from sattelites to spies and there own people where would they build it underwater? in some mountian i mean that thing looks big let alone how you power such a thing and if i was looking at it correctly were helicopers launching off the front like they used the top of it like a carrier deck? wouldnt it either have to go so slow as to not knock around the air craft or use some weird way of locking them into place on rails of some sort attached to a catapult seems like a logistical nightmare

China can't even build an ocean-faring aircraft carrier....however, it's nice to see something ambitious as a floating carrier. I'm not sure what advantage it would have...it seems like it would be a sitting duck to me.

actually this is not entirely new.
It is an off-shoot of the older Camel Hump
mid-air refueling station used by current
military ops. The only difference here
is that this one you can land on it
for re-fueling.

an example of a camel hump
refueling station. Lockheed Martin

one of these was depicted in the hollywood movie
"Stealth".

That thing would have to be loud as hell.
Doesn't seem like a very viable concept. It is just way too large to be used like in the photo, and you know how those first time artist renditions are.

The real deal would probably be ugly, and have balloons attached.

That flying carrier looks cool. But its costs outweigh the benefits.

This large flying vehicle would make such an inviting target. It better boast unparalleled defense systems from air and ground. It should have tons of escorts to provide better protection, like flying frigates and destroyers. (pretty much flying gun platforms.)

Plus, the cost to maintain such a vehicle would be astounding. Already US super carriers cost $1 billion per year each to maintain. Imagine how much this would cost to build and maintain. If anti-grav technology was used, then that would be a different story.

Logistics would be another crazy element to worry about. A fleet of flying units would be required to maintain it hunger -- fuel, ammo, food, etc.

One day when anti-grav and shields are available, this may work. But by then they would be space carriers.

....but you have a much easier 360 attack on these plus ground attack.

This is not to mention, a waterborne carrier can still float if not terribly damaged.

This sucker will just drop....along with all the little planes!
WHOOPSIE!

I love the size of those turbofans...lol, Anybody walking on that deck is gonna get sucked in and turned into sushi!

LOL!!!!

If this was a legitimate project, we wouldn't hear about it...

that airborn aircraft carrier the energy to fly it---AMAZING but sad because they could use the same intelligence to build locations that can displace sapiens sapiens from harmful devastations like floating cities smh.........

I would never want to live on one of these floating cities. One EMP and everybody dies. Imagine an entire city parachuting to the ground. This could only be based over water (to prevent casualties on the ground) and it couldn't be at a very high altitude unless everyone wore flight suits. Imagine the wind turbulence on the surface of one of those things and imagine if someone dropped something.

China has thought of nothing new. Marvel comics has had this concept for decades.

I think its a funny idea. Cool concept and i guess it would look good on paper.. not pratical at all. Defending such a thing like many of you have said would be a nightmare. Unless it had crazy good defenses it would make an easy target. i could see it now... It probably see one engagement and it be wiped off the face of the earth.

I always dug S.H.E.I.L.D.'s technology. Their HQ was sweet looking.

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

With such a large design, you could implement a lot of technology into one airbourne carrier that would normally require multiple aircraft. You could load AWACS equipment onto it to integrate incoming enemy data to any of your deployable fighters. You could emplace several defensive measures like air to air missiles or AA guns.

An considering the thing's size, it would take quite a few hits, or at least you need to hit it where it counts.

Personally, I like the airbourne carriers featured in Ace Combat series more:

Airbourne Carrier Aigaion (it has support fortresses on its flanks, both for electronic warfare/countermeasures and air defense)

The Arkbird Space Plane (not really a carrier, but it deploys drones for self-defense)

Is this a possible design, idea, etc?

If they use the same technology as that UFO that shut down their airport, I'd say it's possible.

Whether it would be more vunerable to attack would be interesting...

Yes they could, if they wanted to. They make everything else.

Maybe they see ocean carriers as obsolete?
