In unions you should never back peddle in other words don't give up what you already have .Yes to me they do seem spoiled Lets face it the economy isn't that good right now asking for too much now is a mistake in my opinion. I think everyone's wages should at least keep up with inflation. My question is this, is Post Canada still subsidized if it is I hope there wages are not going to be paid by my taxes. Not to mention there has been a substantial decrease in letter volume since the age of computers would you ask for more if business is slow.I feel as though they have shot themselves in the foot.

I'm a union man and I think they are spoiled rotten there lucky to get 4+ weeks paid vacation a year. In my profession I get 0 and no sick days no work no pay. They start out at about $23.00 an hour to start my full wage is $25.55 after going through 5 Years of training. And I'm a professional union tradesman.Does that seem fair not to mention my job is dangerous.

Would you stop your bitching...You have a choice in life, you chose to do what you do so don't you dare go and complain and look for sympathy because you are a tradesman !!!

I'm white collar, was blue collar most of my life...I just happen to wake the fu*k up and realize that the grass was greener and tasted better on the other side and made my transition possible. I have 5 weeks vacation (cumulative x3 then pay out), 3 weeks sick leave (cumulative ), 1 week parental leave, 1 week death in the family, 1 personal day and one volunteer day. Guess what...I don't feel bad about it !!! I worked real hard to get here, took me 15 years....

You take your trade tool and be the best that you can, I'll keep using my keyboard and be the best I can !

Thank you !
That's basically what I was trying to explain here - you don't get everything from a start, and most of the people don't, just because somebody "had balls" to bring a union to your company some years back.

Buddy, I've been everything from a short order cook, rig tire changer, landscaping, mover, truck driver, security guard, chauffeur, construction, demolition, telecom wire installer, sat dish installer and served my country honorably to top it off. I now sit on a cozy chair and use all that previous accumulated knowledge and experience to do what I do...Albeit I had to use my head and go back to school but hell.....I did it....so please....Please don't patronize me with the blisters and all....Been there....Done that !!!

What I like about not being union...
Using initiative to be number one in the competitive field...
there is one company I worked for doing super fine because of one simple little idea I had...
It isn't my only business number one...

in a union that company and 30 jobs would be GONE
in a union..you're lucky to be mediocre at best...

If mediocre is good enough...half fill your boots!

It's not for me and the girls I go out with

Here are some words of wisdom. My favoite is by Frank Lloyd Wright.

"All that serves labor serves the nation. All that harms is treason. If a man tells you he trusts America, yet fears labor, he is a fool. There is no America without labor, and to fleece the one is to rob the other."
Abraham Lincoln

"If capitalism is fair then unionism must be. If men have a right to capitalize their ideas and the resources of their country, then that implies the right of men to capitalize their labor."
Frank Lloyd Wright

"The labor movement means just this: It is the last noble protest of the American people against the power of incorporated wealth."
Wendell Phillips

"The American labor movement has consistently demonstrated its devotion to the public interest. It is, and has been, good for all America. Those who would destroy or further limit the rights of organized labor--those who cripple collective bargaining or prevent organization of the unorganized--do a disservice to the cause of democracy."
John F. Kennedy

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."
Abraham Lincoln

My friends, it is solidarity of labor we want. We do not want to find fault with each other, but to solidify our forces and say to each other: "We must be together; our masters are joined together and we must do the same thing."
Mother Jones

I meant no disrespect to you. But I believe if you had everything you could want in a job and ask for more its kind of greedy. Nothing kills a union faster than greed.

Unions are the way to go because of pension, benefits, representation between you and management, protection from unfair treatment, raises that almost keep up with inflation, fair wage and proper training. More accidents occur because of rushing these are proven statistics.Death can be the result of rushing.Unions built our country's. Greedy unions are a problem.

I think it's great ya'll have decided to make this a thread arguing the merits and supposed downfalls of unions. But i'm curious if anyone has any thoughts about how the government caused the lockout, and now wants to try and force them back to work, while trying to pretend that the union somehow caused the lockout.

Thoughts?

Entrepreneurialism is the way to go. ONLY as an entrepreneur will you get paid what you are truly worth. The notion that an employee is worth $100k or more has little merit with me. They sacrifice income range for security of income. I sacrifice security for unlimited income. I have sacrificed more than most people, and given up most of the things i used to enjoy as hobbies in order to build something and have a life free from worry.

Well if you're one of those anti union types id be wasting my time blowing wind in you're direction but I will say this a majority of the bridges roads and highways are mostly built by unions,High rises sky scrapers are mostly built by unions.
Organized labor built our country's. Unions do not stifle entrepreneurialism start a union company. If anything unions can spring board you into starting you're own business.
If you gave up the hobbies you love for work than I feel sorry for you that you're job is more important than enjoying life.
Workaholics are dangerous on a job site. If I travel out to the western part of my country I can make 1/4 million a year
as much as a doctor makes If I stay home here I'm lucky to make 100k.Don't tell me as a nonunion you will make more.I can make plenty as a union employee. The nonunion workers are lucky to even get time and a half here .In a union I get doubletime pension and benefits
This is a friendly debate don't think I'm angry because I'm not. You're entitled to you're opinion.Ill respect that
Corrupt unions are a problem. Canada post is asking for too much.

Its all problem/reaction/solution. They created the situation and now want to look like they're handling it, but the difference is Candians don't accept solutions like Americans, we're a more unified country and can make waves quickly.

I say non union
they treat you good when you are making them money
if they don't then find someone who will
but that takes courage...
those that trade freedom for security get neither

me, I have seen what is happening to pensions and benefits
they are being eroded right under the union nose...
and that failure to man the watch tower is tatamount to treason...

This country and the US were built on courage and ingenuity
not false security

I aint shy to make my own way...

Unions are like the bucket of crabs
when one one crab makes a break for freedom
the other crabs grab it from behind and drag it back into the bucket....

look at the car industry in America for instance....
oh sorry! there is none!
look at the car industry in India or china...
where there is one.

Ps
wheres the cost of living allowance in the lie that we have 3 percent inflation and 8 percent unemployed?

when we have over twenty percent unemployed and over 14 percent inflation...
and suddenly no credit...at any price...

Its all good
old folks LOVE catfood
so I bought stock in organic..

@unity 99
star
we'll find a way...
politics be danmmed

You've stated that before. Can you elaborate on what you think is 'too much' that they are asking for?
-------------------

The Canadian Government is establishing a precedent of Union Busting by locking out the postal workers and then getting the media to spin it as if the Postal Workers are the ones who caused the strike.

Ok these are the facts post office workers get 7 weeks paid vacation a year plus 15 paid sick days a year that they can bank. I've heard that some bank these sick days through there carrier and take a years worth of sick time before retirement. No I do not think they should be legislated back to work. Arbitration should be allowed to take its coarse. They should have taken the first deal they were offered. Man I wish iI had a job with perks like that I wouldn't complain a bit.

See, the main problem here is that very few people are in a union, and those few people do seem to make way too much money and get rich benefits.

Face it, other people get jealous and hate them for that.

Everybody should be in a union, those who make fat bank in the current unions should have their pay cut, then everybody else being newly unionized should all get a pay raise so that everybody can have a modest living wage that keeps up with inflation.
The vacations and sick benefits are a good thing, Most of us work too long and hard anyway, we should all only need to work part time, not like 40+ hour a week slaves that leave one with 1 or 2 days off a week, the better part of you gets exhausted working all day. I hate it!

Yes, I am an advocate of more free time!

Anyway, if you unionize everybody in one country it will not work; why, because a lot of jobs need to compete with poverty wages and poor human rights with no benefits at all overseas, and if they can't work they get nothing at all.

Only a worldwide revolution and invasion of a benevolent alien power from space would make that (world unionization) happen, I'm ready, you, you benevolent alien people you.

People hate unions when they are not in one.
Everybody should be, hell, It's my labour that I am selling is it not? What if everyone demanded a fair price for that?!
