Wait until the Republicans get control of the Senate and White House. Once that happens, you can guarantee that they will start requiring gruesome photos of mutilated fetuses be displayed at all abortion clinics. What's next, photos of brain cancer as mandatory backgrounds on cell phones? How about toothless bums on the side of a can of beer? The possibilities are endless! Woot! Isn't the "Nanny State" great?

Interesting. Whoever owns the media, owns the mind. Isn't that how it goes? If you get enough people to say something is popular (or unpopular) it becomes so. What better way to do this then through the media?

Unrelated: On the bottom of the blog post they had the Sneaker Pimps "Six Feet Underground" video. Thought I was the only one who know/liked them.

When these new packages come out, I intend to set my pack of cigarettes in plain sight in public places, such as restaurants, so that the images on the pack disturb the other customers. Once the non-smokers start to complain about the graphic images, then this anti-cigarette crusade by the government might be curtailed.

I don't smoke, but I think I'm going to find the sickest pack of cigarettes I can find, and do the same thing! That is a GREAT idea. In fact, I may even make a T-Shirt with the images on the front and back, saying "smoking kills". Surely, the thought Nazis won't have a problem with this "public service announcement".

I have just given up smoking about 2 months ago. But I'm not one of those horrid x smokers who now thinks smoking is tantamount to killing children.

I enjoyed smoking the only reason i gave up was here in the UK it was costing me around £300 a month.
I just thought this is stupid i don't enjoy it that much.

Anyhow. Smokers contribute £10.5 billion to the UK economy every year.

Whilst it cost approximately £5 billion to treat smoking related illnesses.

Smokers cant smoke in Restaurants , cinema's , pubs , clubs , the work place , public transport etc etc.
so what harm are they doing seriously.

Like when i smoked most people i know choose not to smoke in the house.

Its a personal choice.

Yeah, I don't smoke in the house either. My old place I used to but not in the bedrooms, and usually only if I had a get-together. I don't smoke in the car either unless it's a long trip.

So by your logic, at the very best, this entire campaign on the taxpayer dime is moot.

It is.

And the next bright idea will be to remove ANY imagery on packets at all.

It failed here, but they're not allowed to have the smokes on display.

It's just shifting sand from one pile to another for some government official to keep being paid... nothing more. Appear to be doing something, when you do nothing at all.

I don't think it's the government's place to be interfering with business like that at all, but I would be more inclined to support blank labeling as opposed to gory imagery. It warps people's minds.

About government interfering in business, I could even see some regulation as far as television or billboard advertising, but not the packaging itself. Funny thing is though, the trend has gone the other way for alcohol, which is FAR more dangerous than cigarettes. It used to be illegal to advertise hard liquor on television or billboards. The only place it was allowed was magazines. Now you see TV ads all the times. Plus, in my state, a real smoker-nazi state, they relaxed the laws on when liquor can be sold.

Yeah, looking back I don't know how the heck I did it either. Two packs a day, makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I was so addicted, I had to take a bathroom break almost every class to have a smoke. Plus I worked in a gas station where I just chained my entire shift pretty much.

Now, I have a few when I am drinking. Maybe just one before I go to work and none the rest of the day. Sometimes I have one when hanging out with friends. I make a pack of 20 last about 2 weeks.
