NEW ORLEANS -- Ron Paul won the straw poll here at the Republican Leadership Conference overwhelmingly with 612 votes, drawing big boos and some quieter chants of "Ron Paul." Jon Huntsman finished a surprising second with 382 votes, despite being a late scratch because of a "bad cold." Michele Bachmann was third with 191 votes.

Herman Cain was fourth with 104 votes. Mitt Romney, the presumed front runner, who won the straw poll here a year ago, faded to fifth with 74 votes. Tim Pawlenty finished with just 18 votes, fourth from the bottom of the 12-person ballot, just ahead of Gary Johnson (10), Buddy Roemer (9), and Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (2).

Paul’s ardent followers packed the ballroom here before, during, and just after his speech, but they were barely seen listening to other speeches. They have organized to win straw polls at many other conservative events as well.

Now there's some great news! Perhaps the American public's opinion will follow? I will admit, as much as I lean towards the left on so many issues, this country needs Ron Paul right now more than anything. We need to become self-sufficient and focus on ourselved again if we truely want to fix the multitudes of everything wrong with this country right now.

Of course, the MSM tries to pull off a slander against Paul's supporters in the third paragraph of the article and making him seem not as popular as he is in attempt to confuse readers.Typical. However, this is still excellent news and I hope Paul continues to do well in this election season.

Paul then Hunstman?

Looks like the potheads were out in force in New Orleans.

There is a thread on this already in the 2012 elections forum, but I believe a duplicate is allowed in breaking news? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, the country really does seem to be turning around in favor of Paul. However there is still a sizable number of freedom haters out there. It's funny, when they can no longer attack the man's ideas because they are so common sense, they start to say things like "polls don't count, they are all manipulated."

Wake up America and ask yourself how's that status quo working for you.

Those "potheads" are Americans too. Just because you might not agree with them on the drug issue does not make them any less patriotic than you.

Or lesser of a person period. In fact it makes them much more respectable. Pot is medicine for the soul.

It's good to see that Ron Paul is starting to gain support.

I think that America's one and ONLY chance of reversing the downhill spiral into total RUIN will be Ron Paul being elected for President. I think this is Americas last chance for REAL CHANGE not BS CHANGE.

Potheads? Or people that think that the government has no right to tell them what they can or can not ingest?

I'm not a pothead.

But, I do think Ron Paul is the only politician that cares enough about 'freedom' to actually fight to achieve it for all people, even those he doesn't agree with,

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if you gained that perception from the MSM.

The sheep have a way of speaking, you can differentiate between the intellectuals and the herded ones.

this makes me nervous. . . I want Ron Paul to win the presidency & all but from the conspiracy theories around the past few elections it seems the presidents weren't put there by Americans votes, but rather by TPTB . . . I want to get excited & jump for joy but at the same time it seems way too good to be true!!

it's still WAY too early to tell if he will get the presidency, let alone the republican candidate . . . I fear how anxious and worried I will be in the future as the process rolls along

I think the reason Ron Paul wins these polls is because he has a very unique and powerful grassroots following. He is the voice of the free for freedom-loving people who smell the stink of corrupted government.

So, I am not surprised at all that he is popular on ATS; I think most people here believe out of the field of all US politicians, Ron Paul is the only one who seems to see Washington for what it is.

He appeals to the certain type of people who would organize going en masse to a Republican conference to skew the polls.

I think it's awesome.

Ron Paul will not win the GOP nomination…no prayer,no chance. He offers us an opportunity to hear a sincere, patriot ic guy with a few good ideas who sounds like his jockey shorts are too tight. He will challenge the serious candidates and disappear…until the next time. He does more good than harm and is a patriot.

So tell us MSNBC.... If he had the overwhelming vote. How is that all these people were booing and only a few people were chanting?

So sick of their INSERT RON PAUL ATTACK HERE injected into every story about the man.

Can't you scumbags just report the news without planting so much manure in it.

Nope they have to convince the all-impressionable American public that no matter how good he is for this country, they have to vote for Romney or Bachmann instead. It really is infuriating and astonishing to see these brainwashing type things everyday in the news.

Look Ron Paul isn't the answer. I am not a Paul hater I just don't think some of his policies would make too much sense and none of them will ever pass the senate or congress. We are past a point where Paul could help. It is time for the people to assert their true power. We run the show and should start acting like it. No messiah is coming to save us. Ron Paul may have a place in the new America but this one is ready to be trashed. I know some of you will be like "but look at his record" and "he has voted the same way for 30 years". So what you are basically admitting is the for the last 30 years the only person in congress that has any idea of whats going on at the ground level is Ron Paul. Ron Paul is one man who can not fix this broken system. If he affects and real change the Banksters will affect a change in his heart beating. He is old they can make it look like an accident or natural cause.

No matter who the public prefers, the candidate who has the backing of the media and the forces that be will end up being the presidential candidate.

Unless there's a mass showing of support for Ron Paul, the media will continue to alter polls and sweep him under the rug. If their is an undeniable show of support for Paul, maybe the media will no longer be able to stifle the popularity of Ron Paul. You can really see how the media will ignore any mention of Ron Paul as if he isn't a candidate.

Even if every single American voted for Ron Paul he would never be the President.

The Electoral College picks the US President. Not the citizens of America.

The Electoral College will pick whoever has the cahoneys to go to war with China to get our money back.
