I have heard on the grapevine for some years now about our HALO project, and I am opening it up to the board to see if we can dig up some more info on it.

Here is a link i found, hope we can get some more:

I believe it is being developed near Morcambe Bay.

Anyone who lives in Lancashire or the NE seen any strange goings on?

Blackburn here, (on top of a hill so I can see morcambe bay too).

I've never seen anything, but I remember reading a while back about a guy who saw what looked like a large black delta/diamond shaped craft over the Hebrides. I seem to remember he said it was refueling mid air from a fuel plane. I can't remember any more details, and don't have a link, but the guy apparently was a pretty reliable witness... he was a retired Navy aircraft spotting instructor!

I think I have heard that one. Was he working on an oil rig or something?

Apparently, the site is at Warton, a few miles from morcambe bay

Well there are a couple of huge sheds there from the old Barrow boat yards. I'm about 50 miles away as he crow flies and you can can see them from here. The size of aircraft hangers; you could hide some big stuff in them! We've also got a local Aerodrome at BAE Salmesbury, but there's nothing more suspicious than a micro-light ever seems to come from there. There is a plane which overflys me around 4 in the morning sometimes though. Odd because it's the only time of day i notice it.

EDIT : Hmm checking the map Warton is the other side of the bay to Barrow, though it's only about 5 miles as the stealth bomber flies..

I don't remember any more details of the aircraft spotter guy though.

Another EDIT : Eh up, it looks like Salmesbury may be connected! from rooting round the site you posted.

BAe Warton - R&D. Upgraded fac. linked to 'HALO' stealth a/craft project
Samlesbury - No.635 V.G.S. - Vigilant T.1.
RAF Woodvale - University Air Squadrons

That's funny. I can see the landing approach Salmesbury from where I'm sitting right now! Wow first it's Al-Queda suspects(now innocent it seems), then it's stealth bombers! Blackburn rocks!

to be honest I'm pretty sure there's not much going on here or Warton now. The last I heard was both sites were threatened with closure and/or massive job cuts.

I remember from about 5 years ago in the Times they carried an article on the HALO with graphics etc.
The MOD confirmed its existence but wouldn't obviously say anything more. Due in service around 2010 I believe.
Looks similar to the B2, but more triangular.

We know that at least 2 RAF pilots were given the oppurtunity to fly with the F-117's at Hollowman AFB. One was actually on his way to Iraq when the war ended and never flew combat missions (The info comes from an F-117 book by Paul Crikmoore). I wonder if this was more than a pitch to buy the F-117, and more of a fact finding / lets see if this concept is worth developing for our AF kind of thing. Based on the open source literature, the Brits were offered the F-117 and they did not purchase it due to cost and compatability. However, the F-117 is not that expensive given its technology etc at the time of the evaluation in 1991. However, if they were developing thier own, the non-purchase makes sence, and the cover story of a purchase evaluation would help preserve opperational secuirty for the Brits.

Hmm....didn't know that, thanks Fred!

i am trying to find a ref to that Times story, it might help point us in the right direction...

Here's one. robocat.users.btopenworld.com...

It would be nice to think that we really had built a genuine stealth strike aircraft here in the UK but I guess I'm just an old cynic.

Upon searching for further links (you have to keep an open mind!) I have seen a number of references to the HALO being a joint US/UK project, which makes more sense to me. Lockheed are the obvious favourites on every page but I am wondering why (or how?) every reference to the BAe-Northrop FOAS/YF-23 proposal which I saw frequently in the past now seems to have disappeared from the web?

If it was because the whole thing was nonsense, well there's quite a lot of nonsense all over the WWW, you don't have to look hard
Maybe there is something a little more sinister going on?

I spent a while trying to find links between BAE and The Avenger II. The first pic on the link looks like a really short F-22. This type of plane makes perfect sence for the Brits to own assuming they can fit it in thier budget. The dates are off, but what if they continued on with the Avenger II project with a few mods? Alot of the development work was done. The concept worked. It was canceled because the contractor and the AF had lied an hidden massive cost overruns.

This also could explain the reports of Aircraft like the TR-3A Manta Flying in conjunction with the F-117 in the gulf?????

As I said a wee while back, why would anyone think we olde europeans have suddenly stopped popping out the good stuff?

(and Muppet, much as have a soft spot for your area - and Warton is most definitely a very interesting place - with all sorts going on - but come on, calm yourself man, Blackburn does not by any stretch of the imagination 'rock', sorry guy, it just doesn't.
:lol

It appears that we are indeed looknig to produce a UK only UCAV (which may or may not be HALO) after the MoD agreed with BAE Systems that we need to preserve our capability in advanced programmes beyond the end of Typhoon and F-35 and also in recognition of the fact that the UK did not get as significant a work share on the F-35 as it wanted, apparentlt Geoff Hoon has also sent a stinging letter to Rumsfeld over US restrictions for UK companies (about 40 years too late!) It is felt by BAE Systems that the UK must proceed with a domestic UCAV if we are not to be left behind by Europe which has its own UCAV prgramme. In an unrelated search I also found these interesting images.

LOL.
.Ok. fair enough. I guess it's an acquired taste!!

I'm probably wrong about Warton, but but did hear from the local authorities that Salmesbury, at least the site itself, is up for sale. There could be lease-back agreements though so you could well be right.

- Well I admit my info is getting older by the day on the place but the last I knew Brit Eurofighters was being completed there.

I think you're right, some sort of financial hocus-pokus would probably be about right.
