WASHINGTON: The defence department first proposed Star Wars. Now it wants Star Trek. DARPA, the Pentagon's research agency that helped foster the internet, wants someone to dream up a way to send people to a star.

The winner will get half a million dollars for the idea. This month 150 competitors answered the federal government's initial call for private sector cosmic ideas. Officials say some big names are among those interested. The plan is to make interstellar travel possible in about a century

Sweet, interstellar travel.. maybe. So ATS'ers, If you know how to travel to a star safely, you can get $500,000 buckaroos! Pretty cool, even though it involves DARPA and i'm sure NASA has a hand in this too..

Thoughts?

Provide the funding and a research team and i'll have us to another galaxy in 10..

Why are they estimating a century? The solution that is possible to come up with under modern technology is simple and obvious with no 100yr lead time to accomplish. Generational ships are the only means until someone smarter than Einstein comes along to fill in the couple very inconvenient gaps he left in his theories. A century from now we'll either be using sticks and stones to kill food for the 'ol campfire or we'll be enjoying technology no one today can even imagine. (The Microwave in 1911? Not even on the most fantastic drawing boards).

Oh Yeah... I'll take my $500,000 half in Gold and half in Platinum, please. I'll be along to collect it next week.

That quick eh? How do you propose to do that? ( I promise not to steal it and send it to DARPA

Do you really think that we will be allowed to go anywhere,we are parasitic infestation. Our world
and leaders are sacks of S----.They are already on other planets, besides meditation and D.M..T
IS THE CHEAP WAY TO DO IT.
The government know we are all capable of time point travel without leaving your living room.
This is why they are poisoning us not for population control, for what we are all capable of.doing and learning.
There real worry is when there mass murdering armies and government will collapse under alien attack.
It is coming soon and i will help them with all my human power to destroy the big lie on this orb........

I want to know where Bob Lazar is. Time to back up those claims of his..

I am convinced this is nothing more than a dog and pony show. We all know that we already have the ability to travel to the stars.

Maybe its a cover to give us the sense it will take that long to get moving around out there... because they already have the tech to do it?! Who knows...

They already have the technology. This contest is just another way for them to find leading independent researchers and inventors to obtain their technology and silence it.

WTF if I knew how to develop propulsion system to get humans to a star I would want a lot more than $500,000!!

Dear Nspekta

½ a million seed money to get to the nearest star, humm.

What ever they are up to it is deeper than that.

They want an idea humm, well maybe or do they just want to know what idea’s we all have. They pay millions in wages to egg heads and they ask for idea’s for outside?

NASA rejected this project, because it was classified, and NASA didn't want to be involved in classified projects. Parts of it are still classified to this day, like details of the atomic propulsion.

But from the parts that have been declassified, I frankly haven't seen a better idea than project orion:

Excerpt from BBC's "To Mars by A-Bomb" (2003), with footage of the "hot rod" tests and comments by Arthur Clarke and Freeman Dyson.
Freeman Dyson is pretty darn smart and he says it should work, other than 1-10 people might die which he wasn't too happy about, but he thought that problem might be solvable and I think the way around that is just to use chemical fuel to escape the Earth's gravity, then switch to atomic propulsion after that, then nobody has to die. It might actually work.

Never heard of it, cool! nice vid too, thx! That project would have definite possibilities..I can see why you would suggest fuel to get into orbit first. I wonder what kind of shockwave and g force would be produced, even with a small type of atomic explosion. Theoretically, it should be able to travel extremely fast, say for example you propelled yourself that way for an extended amount of time, then you would have to ensure some way of turning around to create a braking force to slow down.. interesting idea

well.. not sure what to say. What is D.M.T.? and time point travel? What kinda of aliens are coming? I'm not making light of you, I am interested

This whole post is the reason people should NOT be taking large amounts of hallucinagens and other drugs......you do realize you ranted off about alien attack, and other "worlds" while taking a HALLUCINAGEN right?

The full video is better but I doubt it's on youtube. If you know how to do P2P however....

They had that braking part figured out.

Just turn the ship around and use the explosions to slow you down the same way you used them to speed you up.

The G-forces are survivable by humans, because the spaceship is enormous, like the size of an ocean liner or giant cruise ship for interplanetary travel, and like the size of a small city for interstellar travel. And there was some kind of shock absorber between the pusher plate and the ship to soften the impact of the shock wave. Here's more info about it:

en.wikipedia.org...

The mass of the advanced interplanetary ship was 10,000 tons, but interstellar would need to be much larger, they had a "super Orion" with a mass of 8,000,000 tons.

The biggest design above is the "super" Orion design; at 8 million tonnes, it could easily be a city.In interviews, the designers contemplated the large ship as a possible interstellar ark. This extreme design could be built with materials and techniques that could be obtained in 1958 or were anticipated to be available shortly after. The practical upper limit is likely to be higher with modern materials.
It would still probably be a generational ship, but this is the only technology that I know of that could do it, as chemical propulsion won't do it.

The best way to produce the kind of energy needed to travel to other stars is by matter/anti-matter reactions, however there are some problems with that. Most notably, it's extremely difficult to produce large amounts of anti-matter, which really is a good thing in some ways because the moment it touches matter they annihilate each other completely producing far, FAR more energy than nuclear bombs can produce.

If you accelerate a star ship so that it constantly produced 1G of force on the occupants, you'd relatively quickly get up to very significant percentages of the speed of light (like 99.x percent) and matter/anti-matter is probably the most efficient way of doing this. The other benefit is that the occupants on the ship will experience normal gravity conditions on the ship due to the acceleration. Half way through the trip, you turn the ship around and start decelerating also at 1G until you get to your destination. You never reach light speed, that's still impossible under physics as we understand it, but because of time dilation effects at those super high speeds, the trip seems to take significantly less time for the occupants than it does for those stuck back on Earth,

There are some other ideas besides matter/anti-matter out there for power sources that could work, but they aren't nearly as good. Even matter/anti-matter requires an amount of fuel that might be too great in volume to make work on such a trip, so even that might be a problem. We probably can get to some of the nearest stars using these methods, like the Alpha Centauri system, but getting much farther in a human lifetime, if at all is still something that hasn't been worked out mostly due to the fuel problem.

The good thing about matter/anti-matter was the recent advancement where they kept some anti-matter trapped for 15 minutes, which is a very big deal. To make this sort of thing work they'd have to be able to safely store huge amounts of anti-matter for the duration of the trip, essentially indefinitely.

I'd just like to throw out a reality check here. IF we have the technology to go to the stars today, it came by way of Alien contact. The Nazi's had some smart cookies, to be sure and Op Paperclip picked up those the Russians didn't get first...but even they either thought up things on our own development line or they had help.

Now, if it's Alien based..either by the Nazi's or by our own work since, we're all assuming the Aliens would ALLOW us to use it to travel outside our own Solar System. Considering the fact we obsess about killing each other and every living thing we've ever encountered on OUR Planet, I have a bone to pick. Why does anyone think Aliens would ALLOW us to travel beyond our Solar System with our 'Kill 'em all and let God Sort 'em out' attitude?! It seems to me that civilizations far past our petty death wish crap would be rather hesitant about allowing us to spread and breed beyond the area we already occupy.

^^ Therefore..I really have no problem believing we have very advanced technology and Aliens have been here long before our CURRENT and rather short recorded history began for this Epoch, but..going beyond? Nope... I'm not buying the idea Humans have been beyond our Solar System..or will be allowed to until we mature far beyond where we're at now.

If positions were reversed...would WE let some primitive little war species get ANYWHERE NEAR Earth? Oh, I think NOT!
