Homophobic Men Most Aroused by Gay Male Porn (Study)

One study asked heterosexal men how comfortable and anxious they are around gay men. Based on these scores, they then divided these men into two groups: men that are homophobic, and men who are not. These men were then shown three, four minute videos. One video depicted straight sex, one depicted lesbian sex and one depicted gay male sex. While this was happening, a device was attached to the male participant's penises. This device has been found to be triggered by sexual arousal, but not other types of arousal (such as nervousness, or fear - arousal often has a very different meaning in psychology than in popular usage).

When viewing lesbian sex and straight sex, both the homophobic and the non-homophobic men showed increased penis circumference. For gay male sex, however, only the homophobic men showed heightened penis arousal.

Heterosexual men with the most anti-gay attitudes, when asked, reported not being sexually aroused by gay male sex videos. But, their penises reported otherwise.

Homophobic men were the most sexually aroused by gay male sex acts.

This reminds me of the scene from American Beauty when the nazi male neighbor mistakes the main characters intentions and trys to initiate intercourse with him, thus revealing his true feelings.

I'm not sure what to believe, could it have been a false positive? Or are those who are homophobic just trying to cover something up? Is this a defense mechanism?

No surprises here..I've seen more than a few homophobes that I know personally and that are good ole church going married men in gay bars. Think the old saying is from Hamlet "Me Thinks Thou Doth Protest Too Much".

How are we to take you seriously when you yourself obviously havnt read the original study?
The authors themselves offer an alternate explanation.

'anxiety has been shown to enhance arousal and erection,' and so it is also possible that 'a response to homosexual stimuli [in these men] is a function of the threat condition rather than sexual arousal per se. These competing notions can and should be evaluated by future research.'

seriously the funniest thing I have ever heard. you could not make that up.

it's been obvious for awhile now that those who speak out the most about something are hiding somethnig about themselves. like the MADD president getting caught for drunk driving..stuff like that is prevalent due to insecurities brought on from a young age and a colusion of conflicting ideas on what should be acceptable in society and at home.

Growing up in a backwards town, and being at alot of terrible parties, its always the homophobic guy at the end, when everybody is passed out, that services the openly gay guy...lol. The world is funny.

I suppose it depends on the time between clips of films.

I mean arousal doesn't stop instantly at the end of a video clip, it continues, were the films shown simultaniously.? or long breaks inbetween?

This makes a heck of a lot more sense then gay bashers being gay I don't get why they even participated in the study? I enjoy girl on girl as much as anybody, but guy on guy

Anyone who advocates homosexuality as a choice must have some sort of attraction to the same sex, no?

Since they claim to KNOW that it is a choice so damn well... whilst completely ignoring the people who actually live with it.

I said teenagers, not children.

Although I'm also not inclined to believe that sexual frustrations can't develop disorders like pedophelia, heterosexual or homosexual. Being sworn to a life of celibacy and no masturbation seems like it could create some psycho-sexual dis-positioning.

That's what I was thinking. Why are people surprised? This study just reaffirms what I and many others have always thought, people who are homophobic are probably gay themselves (ie, "in the closet").

I just learned in Psychology that when some men get extremely angry it can stimulate the genitals (as well as many other parts of the body), I think testosterone I triggers it. This could explain it, they see the gay porn and since their super anti-gay, they get mad and chub up a little

Sounds to me like a couple gay doctors conspired to not only justify their own sexual preference but vilify any opposition. Just like the ridiculous "born gay" theory.
