the correct term is, 'the far side of the moon'
because of tidal lock, the moon always faces Earth, the far side, being in near darkness when we have a full moon here on Earth, but during the new
moon, and eclipses, the far side of the moon is the only side that is illuminated by the sun. now refering back to tidal lock, we can never see that
illuminated portion of the moon from Earth.
