(that should read Dept of Education)

STOCKTON, CA - Kenneth Wright does not have a criminal record and he had no reason to believe a S.W.A.T team would be breaking down his door at 6 a.m. on Tuesday. "I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers," Wright said.Wright came downstairs in his boxer shorts as a S.W.A.T team barged through his front door. Wright said an officer grabbed him by the neck and led him outside on his front lawn. "He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there,"

According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children ages 3, 7, and 11 and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house. As it turned out, the person law enforcement was looking for was not there - Wright's estranged wife. "They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids,"

Wright said he later went to the mayor and Stockton Police Department, but the City of Stockton had nothing to do with Wright's search warrant. The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the S.W.A.T for his wife's defaulted student loans. "They busted down my door for this," Wright said. "It wasn't even me."

OKAY. Now, if the other horrible stories of the Cops going into the wrong house or grab the wrong guy didn't do it for you... this one will.

For a Freaking Student Loan. Honest to pete. Couldn't they just went to her work place and ask to see her outside?

This is far above the normal. I can't recall of this ever being report before (Dept of Ed using warrants/SWAT). I wonder how much this whole ordeal costed the US Taxpayer. Most likely more than the outstanding loan.

Wow. There just has to be more to this story. Like maybe his estranged wife is a Nuke Scientist and she has the keys to some nukes and is threatening to use them.

Something tells me One better think twice about taking out that extra loan for their Minor field of Study.

Is there anything they don't use a paramilitary force for these days?

Now that every department has them they just have to use them I guess.

I cant wait for the day they kick in somebodys door because their dog license is a day late.

Step 1. Make education so expensive you have to take out massive loans
Step 2. Destroy economy so even with education you can't get a job (to pay loans)
Step 3. Arrest you for not paying your loans.

The plan is complete. What garbage this country has become.

How about it. We went on vacation and the wife didn't pay the water bill before we left. When we got back there was a letter in our box. Saying our account was turned over to the District Justice office for charges.

I went on the attack. Why, it was two weeks over due. When I called the woman sheepishly said "things are getting tough and people aren't paying so we had to take these measures". The Mayor said so.

That was the final straw. Between the Garbage, sewage and water bill, it wasnt' worth the risk. We moved out of the town and moved to a rural township with NO COPS, Enforcement Officers and have a septic system, no burning bans and a well. Screw you!

They never did send the thing to the D.J. I would have loved that.

What P.O'ed me off the most. They didn't cash the check for THREE weeks after we gave it to them!!!!

why do I smell a law suit
in the making ???

it'll just get thrown out of
the circus court as being
trivial.

what a crock !!!

one of these days, they are gonna do
something like this to the wrong
person and it's gonna turn into
another Waco TX.

Then before you know it,
there will be thousands of Wacos
happening at once.

this was completely unnecessary and
abuse of power.

Unbelievable and I certainly hope she wins a massive lawsuit. This is one of the largest over reactions by LE that I have seen in a year - and that is saying something.

News flash to the DOE and LE - you can't go to jail for failure to repay a loan. You have not committed a crime. You have committed an act that is subject to civil penality and the government certainly has the ability to extract the cash from you by attaching you paycheck, placing leins on property and the rest of it.

Sending in the stormtroopers is over the top. Exactly what did they hope to accomplish? Did they think the cash was sitting on the coffee table.

Everyone involved in this business should be fired and brought up on charges

I'm concerned with what happened to this family but I am more concerned with the fact they sent in a SWAT team because the woman owed student loan money
I mean I didn't think we had debtor's prisons in this country! What would they do if she was there? Shoot her!? I mean if you put someone in prison for debt then how is she ever going to pay it off? Do they now send you to a work camp where you are paid a quarter a day to pay off her loans? That is blatant indentured servitude

They will kill a child one time soon.
and the people will go mad.
like they should have don some time ago.
so will they send in the swat teams for Any late bill?
well the swat team had nothing to do!
you can not just let them sit about all day.
they have to Kick in some ones door.
make the people fear them.

WOW! I wonder if there is more to the story.

I have known a few people who have defaulted on their federal student loans and this didn't happen. In every instance that I am aware of, the government garnished their wages for defaulting.

They send a swat team for a default student loan?

If you believe that then you are truly blinded by hatred for the police. There is more to the story and hopefully we will hear it.

That is what I've heard of happening as well. What if she found a way around this and that's why they came after her? Like being paid cash, under the table. It is still scary. I want to know what the details were of her case that led to a SWAT team smashing down this family's door.

Yes, of course that is a solution, it also assumes that the government's administrative aspects of the loan were accurate. In the case of mine, it was not and the amount was in constant dispute due to their incompetence in administration.

In any event, having a team of hopped-up storm troopers smash into a home over an unpaid loan is outrageous.

With the government essentially owning half the banks in the country, whats next, SWAT teams kicking down your door because you're late on your car loan?

Here you have the government essentially telling folks to walk away from debts with respect to their mortgages and on the other hand sending in assault teams to collect student loans. Makes a ton of sense

Better get those parking tickets paid ASAP

Seriously? You know that times are pretty tough right? I mean there are a lot of people that went to school or started school thinking that they could get a better job and just can't. What if you only make peanuts as say a waitress and they want to garnish part of your wages but you need all you make just to survive? Come on now.

My sister in-law has a PhD in biology and spent years in the rain forest doing research for her doctorate. She has won a bunch of awards for her research and is highly esteemed in her field. When she got her doctorate she had to work at Cracker Barrel for a year before finding a low paying teaching job! Don't come down so hard until you've had to walk a mile in their shoes.

Maybe you can help me understand this.

If I have no job, no money, no income, no property to speak of, how exactly does sending in a SWAT team to kick in my door and wrestle me to the ground change that?

We can get blood from stones if we just beat them hard enough?

You might think that the government, having buggered up the economy and destroyed the job market would at a minimum give folks an interest free grace period to repay these loans in any event.

You also might expect that many of these universities who are sitting on $billions of dollars in endowment cash would forgive these loans. Many Universities are as much banks and investment firms today as they are schools.

I'll bet the cost of the swat team operation totalled more than the student loan. The only reason to do this would be to set an example. Is it in the loan contract that you can be tortured for not paying it back fast enough? Do the cops really go after debtors while murderers roam free?

How dare she default on a student loan, they should have taken the estranged husband and kids as collateral, that would teach her.

All kidding aside (though they may have been thinking that), there was probably more to the case and this is probably their cover story, but who knows, the way things are getting in some states and counties even this would not totally surprise me.
