No. No one knows. Anonymous is just that. The equivalent to Emmanuel Goldstein. And if you've been on the net long enough, you'd know those who pushed for its creation wanted to create just such a thing. The ultimate weapon in moving a culture. An invisible bogyman. If you think a government can control it, you are fully mistaken. If you want an image of what Anonymous is, think of it as the opposite to Harry Potter's Mirror of Erised

Wait a minute.....When did helping a people desperately struggling against a brutal dictatorship make one the bad guy?!?!?! This is EXACTLY the sort of thing that Anonymous has always done! Fight Oppression....and it's a Hell of of a lot more important than hacking Westboro Baptist Church!

Honestly....is everyone here SO cynical that you'll jump to call someone 'THEM' simply because they are working to help someone? So maybe our Government is also trying to Help the Iranian People.....Maybe our Government has its' own agenda...I don't know that for a fact, but I suppose it's quite plausible..So? Does that mean that simply helping the people immediately makes you PART of that agenda?!?!? Of course not!!!

Wow...anymore everyone wants to jump to the worst possible conclusions based on nothing but wild speculation.

I'm no expert on Anonymous but the one thing I do know is that Anonymous is legion, they have no dogmatic core and anyone can claim to be a part of their organization. So how do you know this isn't just a bunch of CIA operatives claiming to be Anonymous in order to discredit them or cast them in a different light? Personally I can think of worse things than helping the people of Iran out with a little computer hacking and it would certainly beat the typical CIA coup that gets many many people killed.

I am 100% on the side of "The Jester", and ever since "Anonymous" started badmouthing him, I formulated the opinion that Anonymous aren't the type of people I'd ever align myself with. I supported them with their attack on Scientology, but I can't support openly putting U.S. military in harms way.

I can see it now... Iran attacks USA in Iraq because of servers being hacked by annonymous. So then there will be the crackdown on the internet and we have war in Iran 2 birds 1 stone

I agree with you.
with America saying they will declare war on hackers?
will they bomb the homes of Ano members?
It is a warning to china...
I bet Ano attacks China soon(USA)
but the government are using Ano for there own ends.
why dont Ano see this? they are being use'd.
I have nothing against the true Ano.

annon are not getting "busted" by being caught doing the hacking.. they are being individually caught by bragging and so forth.. weather online or to their aquaintances... thats whats happening.

I will say again... that gov NIX servers are not that easy to hack... unless of course they are allowing you in in the first place.

I spose you need a good understanding of the word "annonymous" and a very good understanding of OS and NET security to understand what is really going on here.

I bet many of you sit at home and watch CSI and such and see that woman/dude at his computer terminal doing all this crazy ass stuff to get the info on the screen within seconds and you actually believe that its real... which is a shame because now lots of people have these crazy impressions of hacking and what is and what isn't plausable.

I think I may write a beginners guide to hacking and annonymous net browsing to post on this site just so some of you can see a better image of what you think is going on... if any of you would be interested that is?

Peace

this is ridiculous. how about we work off the video only, since it's the only piece of evidence from Anonymous itself. the article is just sensational bullpoop opinion. especially the end where he magically finds out beyond the shadow of a doubt the real motives of anonymous (sarcasm alert)

this is very in line with something Anon would do, they aren't a one minded machine, and obviously prove they aren't predictable. its almost hilarious how everyone is jumping on the CIA. "oh, pssh, obviously CIA." no. its Anonymous. and anything anyone could say should never be taken as a fact on the matter because hey guys...it's anonymous. As far as being distant from their agenda, anonymous isn't a mega organized group. its hackers. and they don't tend to follow rules. about a month ago they hacked PSN? not too connected too connected to oil and corruption. of course there will be people here arguing that, but really.

also, anyone could claim to be anonymous. if anything the CIA, iff they even did do hacking and claim anyonymous, would not actually control the group. it's extremely decentralized. so yes. hacker 101 delivered.

take it at face value, none of us have a real clue

good work over there though.

Here Here!

Sonys only connection to oil is for the large amounts of plastic used to create their products. but meh.. its hardly a huge connection.

The CIA connection is as laughable as the wikileaks = mossad connection.

At least I can get my giggle on!

Anonymous is no one person. Anonymous is everyone. It is the faceless masses of the internet. Periodically they come together to accomplish a goal that has grabbed their attention. It can be as mundane and brutal as torturing a child online or it can be much more, like taking over Iranian government servers. Anonymous knows no morals and they know no rules. They are Legion. They never forget. And.. they are coming.

I read this thread, people of ATS how the hell do you know nothing about anom? PSN was nothing, Operations Payback,/Avenge Assange... ring any bells? Why don't you dig a little deeper instead of just "going off the video"

lets start with something right from the IRC

A #OpIran FAQ List And #OpIran in the media

1.Q: What is #OpIran?

A: Operation Iran (#OpIran) is an operation dedicated to fighting for the freedom of speech, information and ideas in Iran.

2.Q: Is #OpIran an Anonymous operation?

A: Of course it is, because all of the members are anonymous.

3.Q: Is #OpIran a Freedom operation?

A: Yes and No, Yes because #OpIran is fighting for freedom in Iran, and No because #OpIran is a long-running operation - unlike the other Freedom operations such as #OpTunisia, #OpEgypt or #OpLibya.

4.Q: Why did #OpIran kick everyone?

A: We re-started the room in order to organize it again, quality is more important for us than quantity.

5.Q: Is #OpIran a politically "Green" operation?

A: Yes and No. Yes because: A. Being "Green" is a general term, and means not believing in Mr.Khamenei being the leader - and of course no one of #OpIran or Anonymous members believe in that dictatorship. And B: No, because #OpIran is not controlled by any specific political movement or party. (We do however, recognize that the Green movement is not a party.)

6.Q: What are #OpIran targets?

A: #OpIran attacks the governmental websites responsible for oppressing freedom of speech, information or ideas.

7.Q: Will #OpIran attack the media?

A: No #OpIran will not ever attack independent media. Attacking media is against our fundamental belief: Freedom of speech for everyone. We will, however, pursue state backed and government media (i.e. Propaganda, etc.) through legal means, such as putting pressure on their hosting company. We expressly do not attack any media’s website by DDoS or deface, whether independent or owned by any government.

There are times, however, in emergency situations when people’s lives are in danger, when we may vote for taking down a government owned media website. For example, if a government owned media site puts up a "Hunt list" with pictures of protesters for people to identify, then the legal route may not be fast enough to save the lives of the protesters that are targeted in this manner.

8.Q: #OpIran's official twitter account? A: twitter.com...

#OpIran in the media: BBC Persian TV(Persian)(Interview): www.youtube.com...

Radio Liberty/ Radio free Europe(English) (Interview): www.rferl.org... DW(Persian): www.dw-world.de...

Anonymous is not a group.

Anonymous is an IDEA.

There is no leadership, and anyone claiming that there *is* a leadership, doesn't understand anonymous at all.

Anyone and Everyone *IS* Anonymous.

The CIA operation to use face-book and the like to facilitate regime changes through clandestine cyber propaganda?

Anonymous.

The group of cat lovers that track down animal torturers and make their life a living hell?

Anonymous.

Script kiddies launching Low orbit Ion cannon DDOS attacks against $cientology just for [snips] and giggles?

Anonymous.

Politically savvy hackers, exposing software companies tyrannical malfeasance in the form of "Grassroots opinion simulation software" and generally making their CEO look like a [snip] fool?

Anonymous.

Anonymous is *NOT* a group.... it is an *IDEA*

If you know how to proxy through nations that are not on friendly terms (Read: IP log confiscation) with another nation.....

If you have an agenda, and some skill with computers, and public opinion...

Then *YOU* can be Legion.

*YOU* can be Expected.

Calling "Anonymous" *EVIL* because of the actions of a few "Anons" is tantamount to calling ALL Human beings Murderers, because a few Human beings HAVE murdered.

Anonymous is an *IDEA*

If you are asking *WHO* anonymous is.... then I'm afraid that you have missed the *IDEA* completely.

That being said.....

Would the current regime like nothing more than a scapegoat to attempt to increase Internet legislation and communications control, by causing fear of "Super Hackers" in the public mind?

Obviously.

Would they also use the guise of Anonymous to wage their own cyber wars for their own agendas?

Duh.

Also... that too being said....

Anonymous is not a new Idea.

Just Ask Publius.

I was really getting worried about this thread until page 6. Then my faith in ATS was restored somewhat.

It was only after 6 whole pages of CIA claptrap that someone pointed out that the Iranian regime under Khamanei (Armour Dinner Jacket is a puppet) is an oppressive one that most rational people would like to see overthrown, the majority of Iranians among them. Since when did it make any sense to obey tthe hackneyed dictum: "My enemy's enemy is my friend"? Thats where E(U)SA keep going wrong (Al-Qaeda, Mubarak, Lenin, etc.)

Nobody much stopped to consider that part of the genius of the Anonymous idea is that it makes a TERRIBLE patsy. Do you all think that the Iranian gov are sooooooo much worse at this esionage business that they'd not also leap to the conclusion that the E(U)SA would like to shaft them?

Its far too obvious, and what could the CIA gain? Information from the Iranian servers that the Iranians KNOW is compromised, because the CIA have had to alert them to make it look like the work of anonymous. Have the black budgets all been cut too, that the CIA can't afford to use their own perfectly serviceable and very secret hacking techniques that they've been using just fine for years?

I really do find it ironic that the main conclusion drawn in this thread from the fact that "Anyone can claim to be anonymous" (That was truly a beautiful statement in itself! I love it!) is that it is obviously a false flag op. The exact opposite must be the case. False flags only work when there is an identifiable culprit with a clearly defined trail linking them to it, like an ossama or a USSR or an Irish republican.

Deny Ignorance is ATS' maxim. At least those calling themselves Anonymous are sticking to theirs.

Here are the stated aims of OpIran:
