This is a takeoff on an old gag/joke from about a century and a half ago. Whatever the religions, two groups were fighting in the area of India or
so. They were using arms supplied by the West (England, I think) that were "modern" at the time in that they were full cartridges.
The bullets were greased and capped with a protective paper that was typically pulled off with the teeth.. The story was that both were using the
same bullets. One side did not eat beef. The other side did not eat pork. Each was told by their enemy that the grease was that of beef or pork
which ever was distasteful to the group. It is unknow if any battles were won/lost because of that.
I suspect that is a taste of nintheenth century (even later?) English humor.
