This is not a joke... I couldn't believe it when I read it, it just floored me to see what we as humans see as "valuable" these days and especially how our children see things like this.

CHENZHOU, China – A teenager in China sold one of his kidneys to buy an iPad 2, Chinese newspaper the Global Times reported Thursday.

The 17-year-old boy, identified only by the surname Zheng, searched the internet and found a buyer who was willing to pay 22,000 yuan ($3,400) for the organ.

Without telling his family of his plans, he traveled north from his home in the eastern Anhui province to a hospital in the city of Chenzhou in Hunan province, where he was operated on under the supervision of a kidney-selling agent.

His mother's suspicions were aroused when her son returned home with an iPad 2 and an iPhone, and Zheng, who was left with a deep red scar from the surgery, was forced to admit what he did.

She took him back to Chenzhou to report the crime, but the contact numbers the kidney agents gave Zheng were not working.

The hospital, which admitted contracting out its urology department to a businessman, denied any connection with the kidney-removal operation.

Convenient how the contact numbers given to the boy were not working....

This just makes you ask "What is wrong with people????" Not just the boy, but the people who cut out his kidney without any parents? Someone must have acted as a guardian for him....

Even though this is not the norm and an isolated instance, there are plenty like it that demonstrate our materialistic thirst. If only we applied the same pursuit for our spirituality as we do our wares, but I digress.

What's funny is if you changed this story to say the boy did it to donate his kidney to someone who was really sick, he'd be a hero, but instead, he's an idiot.

It will be interesting to hear what others have to say.

Life is cheap.

Whether it's a kidney for a gadget, sex for jeans, or thousands dead for some war life is cheap.

Always has been and always will be.

Someone may have even bought him one for being that hero... I agree he's a massive idiot. Very risky procedure for anyone to undertake no matter how healthy they are. I wonder how his family feel about it?

LOL! Technology has a nefarious influence on this planet indeed...

It's not that we've been led down this path by ourselves, we are simply under the control of a highly advanced intergalactic empire. They have their game on lock... What better ways to devour the organic construct of consciousness? This story reminds me of androidal life from distant past lives...

Besides the US, which is more subliminal, China certainly has the most in your face programming...

Did he get free game's and music down loads????
Because there is no way i would sell a kidney for anything less.

Seriously though, what a weird and sad story.
I agree with you, what type of world is this becoming when people will sell themselve's for so little and what type of sick DR would take a body part out of a teenager just for CASH.
This world is starting to freak me out.

One can at least hope that his kidney helped some other person

Overall: Why waste time commenting this? It's his own decision, he made it, he's happy. Nobody should judge other people and their decisions

What's wrong with that? I sold one of my testicles for $40,000. That's a lie, sorry, lol, but I have heard you can do that...Probably untrue though. That would be very hard to do for any guy.

This kid obviously was not thinking things through properly, and I bet he may regret his decision in the long run. The allure of having money to buy "stuffs" is apparently strong enough in some kids that they are willing to sell a kidney to get said "stuffs."

I'm sure there are kids who would do this in the US, if the US were more like China, where a kid could take a short trip to a shady hospital that rents out OR's to kidney agents...I mean, come on...Ridiculous.

"And they say life is cheap, until you pay the price"

There was a thread about why you had to be 35 years old to be president. It was argued that you should be able to be president at 18. Your one year away from 18 years old and your selling kidneys for iPads and iPhones? This really contradicts that thread.

Everyone on this whole planet needs a reality check.

He could have at least sold his kidney for something that is actually worthwhile. The iPad 2 will be obsolete in a year or so

I cant imagine why someone would buy someone elses testicles. They have silicone testicles, for one thing, for those who just want the dangly effect. Heck, they even make them for dogs for those cases in which the male owners over identify with their dogs nuts.

The sperm function seems much easier, cheaper, and less traumatic for all involved to deal with via sperm banks.

Im not saying you couldnt sell a testicle, I just cant imagine anyone actually wanting to buy one. Except maybe some researcher somewhere.

Another thing to consider with this story, and again, it's not to label an entire group of people, but....

If this kid sees the value of his organs as being worth so little, how does he feel about human life in general?

How many other kids like this are there growing up in today's world of materialism that would not only sell a kidney, but may go much further?

What happens when these people grow up and possibly become leaders or move into positions of authority with such little concern and compassion for fellow humans?

I don't know about you, but with a country that owns most of our resources right now, the above points become extremely scary.

Today it's an iPad/iPhone for a kidney, tomorrow it's $3 trillion bucks for 300+ million people's lives.

This is his kidney. He has full right to do with it any stupid thing he chooses to do. Anyway, in general terms, how we as a society are better? We also remove natural systems for filtering and removing pollutants (forests, rivers and ctr) for technological gadgets.

Well, the point a lot of people seem to be glossing over is that he is 17. In the west, in most cases, you cant enter many kinds of contracts that have a serious impact on your life at that age, and technically, if we let science guide us, it should be a higher age, more like 25.

At 17, the part of his brain that deals with consequences, reasoning, impulse control, etc., is not fully formed. Nor will it be until he is around the age of 25. Adolescents WOULD trade a bunch of lives for a really hot gaming computer in some cases. Because they are adolescents, and lack the part of the brain that really does cost benefit analysis and can project consequences into the future.

People should not be allowed to exploit the mentally ill, children, or the mentally still developing (adolescents) and use their lack of ability to reason against them. In US contract law, this is well reasoned out. The problem with getting governments to raise the age to where it should be, 25, is that THEY like to exploit the weakness of adolescents and get them to trade their lives for nifty uniforms and a weak promise of "adventure" overseas.

Found another link to this story.... www.digitaltrends.com...

It would be one thing if the iPad2 enabled the 'donor' to make a better future for himself.... but it wont.

It will be obsolete in less than three years.

"Consumerism" is now part of the death spiral of the Chinese economy.... but their leaders will get rich from it, so like everywhere else, they will allow their people to become frantic over materialistic 'things' they simply "must" have....
