Israel recently gave permission to (a limited number of the) the Palestinian police force to carry firearms. This is to help settle rising unrest in Palestine. "Most members of Palestinian security forces in the West Bank stopped carrying weapons more than two years ago after some were killed in major incursions".
All officers that are to carry weapons are to be vetted by the Shin Bet (Israel's internal security service).
Some say this could eventually put an end to the internal unrest in Palestine.
