Drug Suppresses Bad Memories, Leaves Non-Bad Memories Intact

www.popsci.com

The researchers conducted a trial in which men were given a dosage of metyrapone and taught a story with both neutral and negative elements. The subjects were then asked to remember as much of the story as possible at two separate occasions: immediately after they learned it, and four days later. They found that the men who received a dose of metyrapone were unable to remember the negative elements of the story in as much detail as the neutral elements, while the placebo group could remember both neutral and negative elements equally well.

While these tests are certainly in the very early

Negative memories effect a persons personality just as much as positive memories. Depending upon the drugs ability to prevent negative thoughts from being written in the long term memory, this could create an entire culture of users who are disillusioned from reality. Over time, their worldview will change and they will not be bothered by anything that is not positive.

Seems like that stuff is already in the water.

Do not we Humans learn from negative experiences ?

Suppressing bad memories just manifests other issues if not dealt with. Bad idea. Regardless if the conscious mind is aware of the memory or not, it is still there.

I think news places just like to continually dig up old news and repost it as new news.

This has been brought up on ATS since at least 2006.

Not blaming the OP just saying the news sources need to stop bringing up old news.

Either that or start doing some real research and find out this is not really all that new.

As I have said throughout the years they have been talking about this (and yes many of the links I provide above it is the same drug), I find it reprehensible to allow such a drug.

Seriously a lot of terrible things happen to people every day, things we do not want to go through one time let alone relive in our minds the rest of our lives. However, without such bad memories we will not be the understanding person we are today. We understand pain others feel because we also have felt pain. If most of the world's bad memories were covered up today, tomorrow we would be studying the effects of bad memories on the next person. That person would be a test subject undergoing tests and studies of how bad memories affect people.

There are those who have over the years said they would love to use such a drug. However, if they were to use such a drug would they be as understanding of the next person who underwent nearly the same horrific events they once endured? It is doubtful as we do learn and grow from our experiences.

Some things are better left alone. This is Pandora's box in my opinion. Messing with this now could devastate our future.

This new study was done with a drug called Metyrapone which blocks the bodys production of cortisol and corticosterone. I checked a few of the threads you listed and Propranolol was the drug used in previous studies. Propranolol blocks epinephrine and norepinephrine...two completely different drugs.

One more thing to add; aside from those willingly taking such a drug imagine the possibilities of the drug being used in an abusive way. It could even be given before and throughout repeated traumatic experiences.

Not only could this be abused by the average sick and depraved individual but it could just as easily if not more so be abused and used by a governing body.

Think of all the individuals who would love to use this to do as they please to someone else. Utopia is a reflection that lies, it will never be. Like all reflections it is the reverse of what is true.

For someone with post traumatic stress disorder this might be a very good thing, however, I believe that you need bad memories, as it is both the good and bad that helps us to learn and grow mentally.

Being a person who has PTSD, I still would not take this drug because I understand that I need all my memories in order to be a well rounded individual.

People need to stop depending on "better living through chemistry" and go back to good old fashioned therapy and instead of being victims, be SURVIVORS!

Drugs like these will some day lead to total mind control.

While not the same drug "exactly" it is the same pretense and not really new. That aside I see that drugs like this can take whatever name they chose for them to take and be used in many different ways.

Viagra for instance has been used for more than just ED in men, it even has uses for women. Seeing that they have such a keen desire to play with the human mind they could just as easily rename and remarket the drug as something completely different and say it was a new discovery. It is not like they have not done such things before.

Here are a few examples of what I am taking about.

Aspartame suddenly natural?
s11.invisionfree.com...

www.campaignfortruth.com...

The truth is unless you are left to the mercies of the drug companies when it comes to telling you the name and what it does. Unless you are a chemist and a doctor and do a complete breakdown and 100% full study of the drug you only know what you are told. Drugs get renamed and remarketed for things all the time.

Just because the name and use is different this time does not mean it could essentially be the same drug at the end of the day. A few minor changes can create a "whole new drug".

On one hand this can be seen as a good idea. This can be seen as a way to shield us from pain. This would be a good way to block out abuse as a child for instance. Unfortunately the we humans need to experience the pain of living to learn life's lessons. We grow from the pain of some bad memories.

I want to keep my bad memories...they helped make me who I am.

People that naturally suppress things instead of dealing with them in a healthy manner, often end up basket cases of one sort or another. So now the people that try to portray themselves as the "good guys" fighting disease and such are trying to make a "medicine" that will artificially create basket cases.... I think I have slipped into the twilight zone. Doodoo dooodooo.
