Lab-grown meat could be coming to a fast-food chain near you

www.independe nt.co.uk

With global meat demand expected to grow almost 40 percent by 2025, scientists in the US and Europe have been working to develop synthetic, lab-grown meat they say could help offset climate change and provide a healthier, safer alternative to conventional meat production.

New Harvest, an organization made up of 'meat scientists' from the US, UK, and the Netherlands, claims that it has the technology to produce processed meats like sausage, hamburger, chicken nuggets within several years.

And one of the earliest adopters of this technology is likely to be fast-food restaurants which don't disclose their suppliers.

While we have been discussing about all the negative impact that genetic modified organism's is doing to human health. We have yet to discuss how lab grown meat will impact human health. Without even jumping ahead to how lab grown meat impact human health, let us focus on the impact that meat has on our health right now. We do know that people who eat a diet high in meat tend to get higher chronic disease and die sooner than those who consume less. Since lab grown meat is not natural to nature will our body respond to it with rejection.

Every year 50 billion animals are slaughter just for human consumption. The way we go about eating on the food energy pyramid is unsustainable because it is putting lots of stress on the planet. Our diet needs to change or people are just going to have to consume lab grown meat. Will you consume lab grown meat?

Mmmmm... Condor burgers yum!

They have also recently won the right to not disclose which produce contains cloned meat in the UK. Couple that with fear mongering about organic produce (namely cucumber), and they are really pushing for us to consume this creepy Frankenfood.

Well we already have Soy being passed off as a good source of protein in practically everything. No matter the after effects of lower testosterone levels in males.

What an absolute steaming pile of lab-grown-BS! This has nothing to do with demand and everything to do with patenting and profiteering. The disgusting capitalist bar-stewards!

The race for bigger profits disgusts me.

"Lab-grown" meat is nothing new.

The problem is it doesn't really compare to the real thing. The astronauts sho ate it compared it to eating a tumor (which, in a sense, is what it is). The texture and taste are considerably off.

As for the health concerns - there's really not much of a health risk. To be blunt - there's a greater health risk from 'real' meat than from meat grown in more controlled conditions. Though I'm certain the majority of the crowd posting in this forum will disagree with me - their fears are simply unfounded.

This sounds really cool. It's a much better option than eating the products of cruelty (factory farming, sow stalls, battery hens) and will hopefully lead to the end of these animal concentration camps.

I don't eat Maccas or KFC or Burger King or whatever fast food, so it doesn't impact me other than hoping that animals will get better treatment.

Another reason to NOT eat fast food. I'll be worried when this crap starts popping up at my local grocery store and there's no alternative. (It will happen.)

Agreed, I haven't eaten fast food of any kind more that a handful of times in as many years, when it shows up in regular grocery stores, I'll just hunt my own, regardless of legality.

BS!!!!!!!

I'll take a 2 degree warmer planet ANY DAY before I eat this crap!

Not long ago they were telling us it was to feed the poor in Africa, but I guess that argument got blown when it was *US* in the UK, US, etc.. that were buying and eating this crap!!!!!!!!

LEAVE MY FOOD ALONE!

What's the difference really though?
There will be no withholding period due to the chemicals such as they use in conventional farming.
It's still meat.

I don't eat at fast food restaurants as I don't think
as of right now it is all real beef and chicken.
And just when you think it couldn't get any worse
it does! " Meat Scientist" okay that's a new
profession, lets all get on board and see if
we can come up with something that slightly
resembles meat. Ick, give me a break!

We've seen articles about an human ear (I don't know what to call it) being grown on a lab rat. We've read about stem cell research that allows reproduction of cells for use in humans, to replace damaged parts. Why not grow meats? Sounds like a great idea.

Its a lot more humane than killing billions of farm animals annually.

I thought that by now science would have pursued & mastered the re-harvestable farm animal. Just a wonderful idea: Instead of killing a cow (for example) for a one-time supply of beef, permit the cow to grow to full mature size. Perform a therapy, massage or surgery that provides looseness to the skin (like the character 'Pouch' from the Dick Tracy cartoon strip) and install a safe opening/closing mechanism.

Allow the cow to eat more and grow larger. Sedate & anesthetize cow, use the 'zipper' for access, and harvest a portion of beef. Close it up, back to pasture and repeat process.

Awesome, right? Long-term naturally replenishing meat source. Cow have have a nice long life. One of these days the right person is going to read my idea and go for it because it makes sense.
