In 1984 US exporters were urged to submit business confidential data about their prices, market share, internal costs and market strategy to the International Trade Commission. The USTR guaranteed confidentiality and compiled the data into a classified report for use in negotiating the US-Israel Free Trade Agreement.

The Israeli government obtained the classified USTR report and passed it to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee to use in lobbying and public relations.

Declassified FBI investigation files in the petition reveal AIPAC's legislative director made illicit duplications before returning the report by order of the USTR. The FBI interviewed Israeli Minister of Economics Dan Halpern who admitted obtaining the classified document and giving it to AIPAC.

And we send HOW MUCH in foreign aid to Israel every year? I guess they are not happy with that, huh? Instead they have to continue to spy on us and now this.

Its just about how long the Americans are going to let them get away with it,because there comes a point when you have to say enough is enough.

...and their PM gets a gushing ovation in Washington. When is the US going to wake up and realise they are being played like a fiddle? From an outsiders point of view, your politicians have to pander to Christian extremists that want Israel to exist so the world can end, and to the Israel lobby that controls your media and banking (well, most advanced countries share this predicament).

I guess its a demonstration of the raw power of media and propaganda. It's a real shame people won't take it upon themselves check sources of information and find out the facts behind the stories. It seems the default position is to ingest media served up from the major outlets in the manner that a cow accepts its feed, then just mindlessly chew on it, regurgitate it then expel it...

Case in point - pro-Israeli groups have successfully lobbied US media outlets to refer to illegal settlements in occupied land as "Jewish Neighbourhoods" when reporting on them in the media. Everywhere else in the world they are called what they are - illegal settlements. In the US media, if there's an incident in one of these areas, the tone is immediately changed as the connotation of a Palestinian attacking someone in their "neigbourhood" rather than a Palestinian attacking an occupier conjure up completely separate mental images and emotions.

I am not sure if Israel and Palestine can ever live together in peace, but they both deserve to. I can't see it happening in the near future while the United States is held in Israel's thrall - its possible the largest impediment to any sort of settlement being achieved.

I have never really understood how the close relationship between the u.s and isreal has started. to begin with. Was it religion related or what, if an historian can enlighten me...
