Ahmadinejad survives assassination attempt

debka.com

A large explosion set fire to an oil refinery unit in Abadan, Iran's biggest oil city, during a visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday, May 24. He came to inaugurate a unit for expanding production capacity by 4.2 million liters a day. Two people were killed and 12 injured. The blast was attributed by officials to a gas leak or "a technical fault" in one of the units, without specifying whether it was the same unit Ahmadinejad was scheduled to visit. However, according to debkafile's Iranian sources, the explosion was triggered by his pushing the button to activate it that

Man, this guy's time is short. At least two attempts now & the Higher ups have been deciding what to do with him for at least a month now.

Things will be real interesting there, now. He is either going to somehow unleash his forces/allies on the suspects OR go into deep hiding and eventually be cut off from his power.

Time will tell. I just hope it wasn't the US behind it. We don't need the Street Cred right now. Nice to see someone else is at it.

Darn, they missed. Hopefully they get closer next time.

I have a feeling this was a hit from the Iranian clerics.

Or, it's just a gas leak and this proves Iran does not blame everything on the CIA.

If it was the CIA would they hesitate to say this? It apparently failed to get Ahmadinejad so they could be boastful, all the more reason to assume it was probably just a gas leak.

Hmm, well, I see what you are saying but I then say that he should be pretty easy to get if his security is that lax.

Meaning... he pushed the "start" buttom and Bam!. Like the thing wasn't tested before he pushed it? And, I think DEBKA has far more resources than you or I to be able to get intel on what happened. They have contacts in the country and maybe even close to him?

We'll see as the days pan out and from Non-US news outlets.

I think the one they threw together says it all, without being said...:

A news conference was quickly staged live on state TV showing him answering questions about the Abadan refinery -apparently to put a stop to spreading rumors that he had been assassinated. He did not refer to the explosion

No mention of the explosion and 2 deaths. All good in Iran today-keep your heads down and Moooooo

Do you not realize that Ahmadinejad represents the more moderate elements of Iranian society?

We should be supporting democratically elected, non -religious leaders, not cheering assassination attempts on their lives.

Regardless of anyone's politics wishing death on anyone is morally devoid and smacks of the official US line towards our supposed enemies of the state.

Just because Obama says we can kill anyone we like does not make it right or necessary.

Right, saw how moderate he was with the uprising against the elections where they murdered peaceful protesters and he didnt raise a finger to stop it.......

If thats moderate , I say its no wonder people are trying to kill him........

not to mention that hes a 12er,and thnks hes the chosen one to bring about the mahdi, or that he uses his wizards and "magic" to divine answers

Anyone cheering on the death of another human being is soulless. I know it has become a cliché, and a cliché for good reason if you ask me, but who is not reminded of Nazi Germany, or Romans feeding people to lions in the Coliseum?

It's the ideologies of these murderers you people are cheering on, not freedom or democracy. Freedom does not mean the freedom to kill anyone you want.

You're kidding-right?

Mad Mahmoud from the old embassy days:

Ahmadinejad and friends stormed the US embassy in Tehran — an act of war — and held Americans hostage for 444 days

You know, the US Citizens that he was a "student protestor" responsible for the Hostage Crisis?

Ahmadinejad's more recent exploits include developing nuclear weapons, with which he has promised to obliterate Israel, and waging a terrorist war against our troops in Iraq.

Mahmoud at a meeting of the student hostage takers with their lord and master…the Great Satan himself, Ruhollah Khomeini.

Yep, just the moderate that the USA would want in power over there.

I will take my chances and dare say that IF the uprising that occurred when Obama first got in office had been a success, HE wouldn't be in charge and we would like the people that would have been propelled to power. IMO.

I remember the Iranian Hostage days. So, I say Screw him and give us someone else.

Brilliantly said. Couldn't agree more.

I'd applaud you if I could.

More debka right wing garbage it was not an assasination attempt, or conversely it could be spot on because let's face it Israel love a good assasination and debka would be the first to know .

The member of parliament for Abadan said a similar fire had broken out at the plant two weeks ago and his pleas to delay the inauguration until the problem was fixed had been ignored.
“Despite our repeated warnings, the managers of the refinery were not willing to cancel the ceremony and they insisted on holding the event,” Ali Mousavi Jaraf told the Mehr agency.

Dead on, couldn't have pointed it out better myself.

He is being seen as a threat to the ruling clerics, which is why we have seen the clerics take down systematically the people he placed in power around himself. Given the chance he would overthrow them but the Ayatollahs still hold the power, I don't think he will survive another political cycle, the clerics will replace him.

So let's extrapolate on your "reasoning."

There is a guy running a country, that another country (USA) doesn't like, so we should just try to kill him.

By that reasoning, if Iran's leader doesn't like the USA leader, shouldn't he just try to kill our leaders too?

And whoever has more military power to accomplish this is automatically morally justified?

Is that your way of seeing world politics? I think you and Hitler would have gotten along great.

Where in the heck did I say anything about replacing him with a western dictator?

And worse yet, people stared you for putting words in my mouth....I guess that just goes to show the true intelligence of some people here.

There wouldn't have been a hostage crisis if it wasn't for America installing a dictator for a few decades. Who cares about history though!
