Wow, this is really a non-issue.
Er, I think what you really mean is that you have absolutely no clue how to refute this evidence. So you pretend to dismiss it as a non-issue because you have no other way of dealing with it.

In 1941, the company added a new dimension to typewriter technology which Sholes, Jenne and others probably never dreamed possible: proportional spacing. A new carriage mechanism eliminated the uneven appearance of typewritten material where narrow letters, such as "i" and "1" occupy as much space as wide letters, such as "m" and "w." Proportional spacing gives each letter typed only as much space as necessary, and the development has greatly improved the appearance and legibility of typewritten material.

an essay on proportional type spacing with IBM typewriter

--" The chart above shows how a unit system derived from that of the Selectric Composer could be augmented with two alternative spacings for these cases. Note that capital J has become narrower in both additional settings; that is because, in the fonts concerned, it descends below the line, and thus is kerned: that is, part of the letter overprints the space alloted to the preceding letter."--
And that is as far as I am willing to go with this -- guano crazy bustededit on 16-5-2011 by spyder550 because: (no reason given)
