Hola! I've been looking for what qualifies a conspiracy theory to be placed in the hoax bin but can't find anything. Is it just subjective to moderator decision or are there parameters it must fall into?

It has to be proven to be a Hoax, or already known as a Hoax

Yeah... but what "proves" it?

It has to be proven fake within the thread, if someone provides proof to support their claims that it's a Hoax, and others agree than it's moved, I may be wrong though

For example if someone posts a Alien video and claims they filmed a alien in their backyard hiding behind a table, and someone replies pointing out how the Aliens leg overlaps the table leg, than it would be proven to be CGI and fake

For something to get moved to the Hoax forum, enough evidence has to be presented to be able to say with some degree of certainty that it is a hoax.

Other subjects from known charalatans and hucksters get moved automatically.

Also, for the [HOAX] tags to added to the thread, an admin must do that and there has to be quite a bit of proof that it is intentionally done or a deliberate attempt to try and hoax ATS or the wider internet. These attempts generally also result in the bannings of the member involved.

AS for who decides, the membership brings the evidence forward and the staff at all levels are generally involved in determining if it is deemed a hoax. Sometimes it's hard, other times easy.

Thanks for the reply. But I see that it's often not contained in the thread. If issue A on thread A gets debunked then issue A on thread B will also go to the junk bin, right? As far as proof, would legal state department documents constitute as proof?

I can't answer your question, OP, but I have wondered that, too, and since you brought it up....
I'll watch to see what interesting tidbit you may be considering posting or what story you have in mind when inquiring....

Very curious to know what prompted your OP and your follow-up question!

Normally that would be the case yes.

They should I suppose. They would have to be presented and scrutinized first. Decisions to move things to the Hoax forum are usually done on a case by case basis. Somethings that have been moved to the Hoax forum, after further evidence has been presented, have been moved back out of it. Again, it's usually a case by case basis.
