Just out of curiosity, Id like to see who would prefer which type of weapon and why.

I would totally prefer sniper weapons. Cuz you can sit back a long ways away and pick off enemies without them ever knowing what was going on.

I hate small arms, cuz theyre to crude. I hate messy work, where you gott rip off ammo and risk not making the kills clean or efficiant. Plus your down close up with your enemy, which gives you a better chance at being slaughtered yourself.

A weapons effectiveness is really determined by what Situation and enviroment you are in. If you are a tight Urban setting with no good line of sight a sniper rifle is not going to be a very good weapon. Just like if there is not alot of cover and you are in a very open area a assualt rifle will not be as good as a sniper rifle.

It also has alot to do with how good you are trained. A person with a sniper rifle that cant shoot is going to get owned by a person that knows what he is doing with a assualt rifle.

I really depends on the situation. Are you talking about an all-around weapon, anarchy in the streets, or just a good home defense weapon? Sniper rifles are awesome, but if you have to go inside a house you are out of luck.

The M4/SOPMOD (or its civilian cousin, the AR15) has really proven to be an effective compromise. I have a carbine AR and its relatively good on the irons out to about 150 yards, if you can see that far. Throw on an ACOG and I believe that they are accurate up to 500-600 meters. If you swap out the upper for a shorter 11.5 or 14.5 inch barrel, you have a capable room clearing weapon out of the same rifle in about thirty seconds.

bear with me people. just use your imagination or something, just say what you would prefer, alright?

lets not start a massive debate over condintions and situations and blah blah....

OK then over all I would choose assualt rifle. A weapon like the M-29. They are far from crude, plus airburst grenade yummy.

To me, an automatic weapon is totally crude. With all those bullets, someone could just get sloppy. Of course, thats just my opinion. And, Id sure like to see what others would like to say.

I think military assault rifles are used primarily in semi-automatic mode. The nice thing is that if you do get into a situation where you need to use full-auto, its there. In fact, I dont believe that the M29 is capable of anything more than three-round bursts.

On a side note: I have no clue what the military fire control group is like on the M16A2/M4, but civilian AR15s and AK47s are not machineguns. They are not sold off the shelf with the ability to shoot any more than once per pull of the trigger. This is a common misconception about civilian assault rifles that the media loves to play on.

For all around use, my choice would be an M4 with an ACOG or EOTech.

Yeah shadow the XM-29 is a good compromise between a sniper rifle and an assault rifle. The XM-29 like you said has airburst grenade and has a laser only visible to the shooter through the scope. You can still have good aim with it from very far away.

The normal soldier only gets the 3 shot burst.

The Special Forces were unhappy with the burst-fire device and so another M4 was adopted, the M4A1, which differs in having the ability to fire fully-automatically, rather than only burst-fire

There had been complaints from the Army about the burst-fire device since the adoption of the M16A2, because it doesn't reset when the trigger is released if only one or two shots are fired. I'm not sure whether this change to ordinary full-auto was a good idea or not, because apparently SOCOM have been unhappy that the M4A1's barrel gets too hot and there are cook-offs when Special Forces personnel attempt to fire six or more magazines through the gun continuously on fully-automatic!

ShadowXIX: Thanks for the info.

As I understand it, the new Colt SOCOM M4 barrels arent turned down underneath the handguards to prevent them heating up as quickly and maintain barrel integrity under sustained full-auto fire. I agree, my standard HBAR gets H O T after bumpfiring 2-3 magazines. I can only imagine what the real deal does after six!

EDIT - Is that laser on the M29 infra-red? What is its maximum effective range?

Out to ranges 23 times the existing M16/M4/M203 system, or up to 10 football fields for the 20mm grenade. It fires the same round as an M16A2 with the lower barrel, 5.56 mm, and can fire in either a single shot or two-round burst.

As for the laser Im pretty sure it is infrared

another interesting fact for the 20mm grenade . A safety mode does exist, in that the rounds have an 8-second self-destruct mode. After being fired, the round will explode in 8 seconds regardless of impact. This insures that no unexploded rounds are left on the battle field.

SpockO_o the 50.cal is indeed a sweet weapon. Distance is the key though if a guy sneaks up on you with one of these

You can be in a world of hurt

A .50BMG is on my wish-list, but unfortunately the funds arent there right now. Ferret50 has some short-barreled conversion .50s (18in) that you could get up close with. They're accurate out about 1000 yards, but they want $1700.00 for an upper receiver alone! Unfortunately they are only single shot bolt actions so they wouldnt be as much fun as a Barrett.

.50 cal sniper rifle all the way! or l-81 which is a nice rifle but has one hell of a kick.
i like the sniper bit cause you can tale time and think about your actions cause your enemy is so far away.

Well as people have said it depends on the situation. For example I would never take a sniper rifle in to CQ Ops. But of course in most outdoor situations I would naturally take a sniper rifle. I love stealth. I like having distance between me and my enemies. The great thing is range, which also contributes to stealth and fianally theres plenty of power in one shot to get the job done. So sniper rifles have always been my favorite weapon. I think a lot of weapon preferances have to do with personality. Like for example I noticed a lot of guys who want to be all tough guy usually like gattling guns and shotguns. Yet a lot of the more quiet or observent and secretive people seem to like sniper rifles and silenced weapons. Just a thought.

The laser has to be IR for it not to bee seen. Im not sure of the range of the laser but the maximum range at which the air burst grenade can be used is 300-400m. You cant use the delayed explosion unless your laser works a those distances, so im guessing the rage of it somewhere between 300-400m. i could be wrong anyone got info on this?
