I'm looking at the actual article and now I'm looking at the thread title - It's like a headline taken directly off of Fox News!

In a government that truly represents the people and is held accountable by the public, I pretty much agree with what Obama actually said in the article.

I completely agree with the importance of government jobs, but then again I'm biased. Truthfully, most people that think government jobs are unimportant or filled by lazy people simply have no experience in the matter. I protect your tax dollars every single day and I'm damned good at it.
O yeah you protect our tax dollars from us ever receiving them
get real without the privet sector your out a a job. I bet your job is hard by the way im just joking but the last thing our economy needs is an already over bloated government thats why government jobs are being downsized and they should keep it coming no offense. I'm sure you could get an accounting job in the privet sector. I'm a firm believer in the smaller the government the less they can screw up which seems to be the only thing our bloated ass government has been able to do for years now. Trillions in debt in the matter of a couple of years means someone needs to get the axe so at first it will be teachers, then military, then you. Dont get angry at us look to your boss for answers

The woman describes her situation, whereby she was categorized as a non-essential employee and was laid off and then asks him what to do.

He asks her directly where she was working and she tells him that she was employed at the National Zoo. He then goes on to say that folks like her provide "vital" services to the public. At the end she states that because she was working for the government she felt her job was more important than a job in the private sector. He responds "I agree with you".

That he would lump in anything done at the National Zoo in the category of vital is yet another topic

Because he made the comment in the context of responding to a woman's statement about losing a government job, thats how. He was talking about government employment. In making a comment about serving the American people, how else can you infer that he is not speaking directly about the value of government jobs? He specifically stated that he was frustrated by the fact that folks don't value public sector jobs the same as private sector jobs. How else are his comments to be intrepreted?

Been a lot of talk in the thread about how his comments are being manipulated. How? What do you think he said?

He is the president dolphinfan, do you expect him to insult the employees of the government he heads?
Like it or not, those people go to places, away from their families like the rest of us and put in a days work.
He values them, I mean how did it get this bad??? The guy is a man, it is like you reckon he is a moat-man
or Richard Ramirez.

There are so many levels that are off about your conclusion

Kindly imagine President Obama stating

""I think there is nothing worse than working on behalf of the American people."

The foundation of this argument is a manipulation, chastising a person for interacting in a way
that fits the circumstance is really off the mark on your behalf

Try the contrary

Imagine if Ron Paul said - "I think there is nothing worse than working on behalf of the American people."
Even though he dislikes government, he would never say such a thing, he is a politician... Obama who comparatively likes government, spoke to the occasion and probably thinks working for the public is a honorable profession...

Thank you for explaining the arduous thought process that took you from the reality of what Obama said to the imaginary statement you went on to explain your distaste for.

You also helped them steal it, by the very job of "protecting" it (You decide where to spend the stolen money). Bottom line is taxes of any kind promote theft and violence (only "legally"). The problem with the statement the president made is that government jobs don't produce anything for the economy whatsoever. In fact it probably harms the economy more. It doesn't take years of research or college to realize that. Not trying to offend anyone here but this is just ridiculous.

Edit:
Sorry thanks for protecting the money that was stolen from me! I appreciate it by the way

I hate to call you an idiot, but that's what you are. Hey, guess what? I PAY TAXES ALSO!!!!!!!!! Shocking, huh? I work for the fedreal government, and I pay taxes. According to you, I am stealing from myself. Again, this is an idiotic claim. Don't like paying taxes, move out of the dang country!

Wow Idiot really....okay So because you pay taxes as well then I am an idiot and should move. I'm not the one working for an gang full crooks, thieves, and liars. Lets look at the definition of theft:

Main Entry: theft
Function: noun
Etymology: Old English thiefth
: LARCENY; broadly : a criminal taking of the property or services of another without consent

Since I do not consent to the taking of my hard earned money, that is considered theft. Also I never said you were stealing anything, you only assist them in making sure the stolen property gets used properly. So in a sense your assisting in the theft of your own property. Just because you pay taxes doesn't make it any less criminal. To say it's not theft is idiotic to say the least since we are calling each other names now. So since you support the violent taking of peoples hard earned money you get to stay in the country, while I on the other hand do not support the violent taking of a persons hard earned money so I must leave the country. Interesting concept did that take you all night to come up with? Sorry to say it but your just another thug working for the criminal federal government, no different then the rest of them. Have a great day!

You're more than welcome, but it was not that difficult. When he agreed with her in stating that he felt that her job working for the National Zoo was more important than a job in the private sector and after hearing that she worked for the National Zoo he described her job and others in the government sector as providing services that were vital to the country, I took him at his words.

Or pays more for doing less.

The state workers are sinking the state of California with their unreasonable demands for more pay and better benefits and I could have a rich full life without them. toll roads and a fire plan.
I don't need to spend 60% of what I work for in taxes. What they do is just not that important to me and when you are forced to interact with a state worker they are sullen and resentful.
Prop 30 supporters want to raise the sales tax to 10% (I remember when it was 6%)
Plus the state income tax, 12%, property tax, car tax, all the taxes on your utilities and phone, etc etc and add to that all the government taxes taken out of your paycheck before you even get it.

This older thread goes into it.

Now that is a laugh.
Gotta love the idea of what has been going on at GSA and so on.
I have first hand knowledge of several Federal Employees, over the last year and a half that I witnessed, that slept and did absolutely nothing for a 8 hour day.
Mr. Sleepy's job was to maintain 10 printers. He was something like a GS-11 I believe. been there for close to 25 years.
Mr Do nothing was a manager, but was more concerned with making sexist jokes at drinking coffee all day.
Oh yeah, a female Federal Employee with a title of Network Security Engineer. She would assign her work to contractors, and when the work was due, she would go on vacation for that week.

So, yeah. Govt employees, for the most part are useless. Most are just there to fill a seat, and would sink in the real world.
There are some that are great and actually do their job. But, that is maybe 20%.

Thats because some positions are filled with people who are lazy or unqualified. You might not be one to fit into that category, but those people do exists. Right now with unemployment still very high, ANY job is important.

I could say the same about people working in large PRIVATE companies, hiding in basement, yarning at the water cooler. etc etc. Leeching off the stock market etc.

your right...walk into any wal-mart and see how happy the employees are....they look like zombies, trying to get through the day, and hoping the end of their shift comes faster....low pay, faked management hyper-enthusiasm, cameras watching your every move, little, if any benefits.........

Sterotyping is stereotyping.

Right, because your 3 negate the 22 million employees that are there.

Oh, that is just the 3 off the top of my head.
The Data Center these 3 worked at is filled with more like them.
Having watched a Federal Supervisor tell a newly hired Federal worker to slow down was common.

Lets also think about the last time anyone here enjoyed the visit to the State DMV.
Yeah, well oiled machine with happy people not just filling a void.

While most at the VA centers across the US are nice and smile at the vets, they are about a slow as grease in winter.

Now, not having met the 22 million total people, I guess I can only work with what I have seen and interacted with.
That number is high, higher then most. And this spans from interaction as a customer all the way to a pseudo co-worker.
The Govt worker, as a whole, would not last in the real world.
I stand by my statement.

This is such a jeuvanile arguement. As long as you are using roads, emergency services, putting your garbage on the curb, water, energy, parks, bad guys going to jail, and education, you are getting a return on your taxes.

Truthfully, most people are right... government jobs are mostly unimportant and most definitely filled with lazy people. I have MUCH experience in the matter as I worked for the federal government for many years post college. If you are genuine in your assertion that you "protect tax dollars every day" and that you are "damned good at it" then you are a rare anomoly.

For over 7 years I worked for DOD, Interior and Corps of Engineers in a civilian capacity. The waste, the laziness and ineptitude were STAGGERING!!! At one job I was offered the "Night shift". It came with a pay differential, so I took it. My co-worker was excited to have me join him, as we were now able to take turns taking naps. One DOD job I had saw our department budget was over-bloated at the end of the year. We were ordered to spend the money by Septmber 1 or risk losing it in budget for next FY. Know what we were told to do? Go buy televisions and DVD players until the remainder to the discretionary budget was spent. All told, it was over 200 tv sets and DVD players that went right into our warehouse where they sat for the 3 years I was there.

My best friend is a Civilian Director for Base Housing DOD. He has a minority employeee who shows up half of the time to work. He has tried for 5 years to rid himself of this headache and is unable. HR has told him that because he is a minority, they won't go there. HR told him to tell the employee to just stay home so as to not affect the morale of the other employees. Yes, you read that correctly... the man is paid to STAY HOME FROM WORK by the Federal government!

The bottom line is this... The government produces NOTHING! It simply redistributes, as it sees fit, the confiscatory taxes (revenue) that they take from people who toil away to actually produce something.

LOL *cringes*

DMV is state, btw. Not federal.

My state actually implemented a new sytem that is making life much easier these days. First off, they put what they could online, then they have express centers for basic quick things (brilliant) and then they put a person at the entrance at the dmv that immediately tells you what forms you need, and where you are going. Makes a huge difference.

The Govt worker, as a whole, would not last in the real world.
I stand by my statement.

I handle both just fine.

Yeah. Ok then.
Here, here is how much of the Govt operates.

Roads?
State DOT sure does a great job of keeping the roads maintained. Funny, how as the each gets to the end of their fiscal budget, more little projects go up that seem to really have no work going on.
Garbage is paid not by taxes in many places.
Water is the same.
Energy?????Really???? I have yet to pay my Power bill to the Govt.
Parks? Ok, maybe, but alot of the funds come from athletic sports as well.
Bad guys and jails? Some. Many of the prisons are privately owned as well. And they do such a great job of keeping those criminals in jail.
Education? Now that is a laugh. The Education system here sucks, the children come out dumber every year, yet the moronic teachers scream and cry about not getting raises. Just another example of a group of Govt employees that would not have a job in the real world.

So, I would expect that I get about half back from my taxes paid, as the Govt worker seems to put in about half the effort.

Yes, yes it is. From the highest position it is a problem, all the way down.
Yet, in the private sector, the person(s) would be fired and the company would close.
But, not Govt. Why, they just increase their budget because the failure is just a lack of personnel or funds.
