I'm not very familiar with his music but what songs does he rap about that. I though he was pretty RNB.

What needs to happen is that immortal Technique and Pharoahe Monch get an invite to the whitehouse......Would be pretty hilarious to say the least =P

I'm not a fan of rap music, but the concept doesn't really bother me that much to be honest.

Man! I would LOVE to see Obama and Immortal Technique sit down and discuss world events!
That would make for amazing TV!

Just before any misguided people start slagging Common off for rapping about killing cops. He is not a gangster rapper. His music has much more meaning to it and is very soulful and not at all gangster, which he prides himself on being nothing like.

I dont see this as a bad move, a lot of Commons work is political. Its nice to have a music artist with a brain and nice that he may be able to help your government.

Now that would be something, but unfortunately Tech and Mon wouldn't receive an invite to the whitehouse (even though all three do the same thing).
Doesn't really surprise me though, Common is an Obama supporter and made his opinions known during the presidential campaign. Along with his cop killer lyrics he has also made some racist remarks throughout his career.
Anyway, good luck to him. I'd personally use my invite as toilet paper just as i have in the past with the linear notes from Commons albums.

Never heard any of his songs talk about killing cops or even hurting people to be honest, do you have a link to these supposed songs lyric's?

LOL.

I like how the 'article' says he "Reportedly, ... celebrates the murder of police officers" . Why dont they just print the 'reported' lyrics?

Common is about as tame as they get. Wasn't h in a gap ad a few years back? Now THAT's offensive. Obama interviewed someone who was in a gap ad?

Common isn't a bad rapper. He is one of the few left that actually writes REAL Hip hop. Like Lupe Fiasco. Don't be strayed by one little thing. It's this kind of editing that delivers the wrong idea about a person to the people. What about the other songs he's made trying to wake people up?

Perhaps it would sit better with you if he had invited Eminem instead?

Yeah well, here's one.

The former first lady was sleeping with a known war criminal every night; her husband was completely oblivious, of course.

Top that!

So, Common has lyrics in his songs, which he wrote about killing cops and people are ok with this?
It is not like most artists today, who mainly perform songs written by someone else. He actually sat down, and put pen to paper and that is what came out. And he is invited to the People's House, occupied by the leader of the United Sates Executive Branch, the enforcer of laws if you will.

So if a white male were President, and invited say a white artist who sung about killing, say black activists people would be ok? I think not.

What a disgusting display of double standards.

Who cares? He writes songs, big deal...Do you condemn people that write books where cops die? Do you condemn people that make movies where a cop gets shot? Do you hate people that make games like GTA? What's the difference really? It's all artistic expression...

No, I have no problem with free speech.
But, inviting him/her/then to the WH? Come on.
WE have agreed on alot lately, lets not break stride with that.

President Barack Obama and FLOTUS Michelle Obama will celebrate American poetry and prose at the White House. Among the poets, musicians, and artists who will be guests is Common whose real name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr. Reportedly, the rap of this particular hip hop artist celebrates the murder of police officers.

In that context, sure why not? I would say he fits in with the concept. Also, the article didn't state what this is really about. A lot of times these events are to raise money for charities, they sell plates for a few grand a pop or whatever to raise money. That could be what it is for, I wouldn't have a problem with that. I wonder what other peots/artists will be there....

I mean it is not like he is asking him to come to the white house to hang out and help him decide on legislation right? At least I hope not.

I would not put anything past the current administration.

I just think it is below the position of the President. But, then again, with Obama being president, I should not expect anything less.
