The title is self-explanatory. I personally don't understand the difference between the two.

1. Mullah Mohammed Omar founded Taliban and the credit for al qaeda goes to Osama bin laden.
2. Al Qaeda consists of Sunni Muslims who practise Wahabism, which is considered to be the most extreme and violent form of Islam). The Taliban, dominated by people with Pashtun identity.
3. Al Qaeda means “the base” or “the foundation”. Taliban means talib that means “student.”

Thanks for asking OP, we (at least many in America) talk about Al Qaeda, Taliban, Sunnis and Shiites all the time and for the most part have no idea who we're speaking of. I'm as guilty as anyone

I thought both were the same thing

It's much simpler than that. Al Qaeda terrorizes the word and to justify it they say its for country's supporting israel supporting as allowing them to live. And they want the Palestinian people to get their old country back.

The Taliban terrorizes it's own people by trying to oppress their people and make them live in the stone age by the rules of their evil book the Koran.

Thats your differance

Had to star and flag this for the information it provides compared to the crappy new threads i've recently been seeing up on ATS. I'm sick of hearing rants and opinions on Osama Bin Laden which doesn't accomplish anything in the end.

One was a blanket title for a loose collective of like-minded terrorists.
The other was the name of the ruling governmental body of Afghanistan at the time the wars had started.
It's like the difference between say Greenpeace and your national Governmental body.

The Taliban is not a member of Al Queda, it was an unfriendly, oppressive theocratic body that was sympathetic to Al Queda. The "war" in Afghanistan isn't recent, we went in at the same time we went into Iraq back in '02-'03. We immediately drove out the Taliban ostensibly we're told for harboring and supporting Al Queda.

Can someone explain the difference between Al Qaeda and the Taliban

Taliban - a puppet political party installed in Afghanistan by the CIA who then rebelled against their masters.

Al Qaeda - a fictional terrorist group created by CIA as excuse to wage bogus wars for resources & to justify their ludicrous expenditure. Also to keep everyone in purpetual fear, so as to maintain control more easily.

Taliban are native to Afghanistan. Al Queda are not. AQ are basically foreign fighters who found a haven in Afghanistan becuase there was no effective government and Bin Laden managed to pay off the right Taliban chieftens to let him set up operations there. In fact, many Taliban didn't want him there in the first place, but I guess money always talks.

On a side note, here is an interesting article from 1997 on the Taliban at Unocal's HQ in Sugarland, Texas to talk about a pipeline.

news.bbc.co.uk...

That's right. There were Taliban reps in Texas.

Al Qaeda is a fictional loony tunes organization created in a computer data base.

The Taliban are a factual religious loony tunes organization created by Allah.

+1 Well put.

On a side note, I can't stand people that actually accredit Al Qaeda with anything significant, then turn a blind eye to their obvious CIA ties.

Isn't that pretty much a given to one degree or another?

Al Qaeda fights outside forces and governments. So picture them as a army fighting other countries.

Taliban fights the people of the area there in. So picture them as a police force enforcing there laws on people in a country.

OP (and several others), this almost confirms my suspicions that most of the people calling out for the arrest/war/extermination/fillinapplicable of or against various muslim groups have absolutely no idea who they are, what they represent or why the hell you want to kill them.

At least asking is a step in the right direction I suppose.

Al Qaeda and Taliban are like Eastasian and Eurasia. They are intentionally meant to blend together.

Al Qaeda are the "bad guys" responsible for 9/11.

Taliban are the "freedom fighters" and generally good guys, like they are right now in Libya. However, sometimes these two are fought at the same time, like after the Iraq war. The "taliban" were fighting, no duh because their homeland was invaded, but the real enemy was "al qaeda"

Basically Al CIA DUH is a front organization to parrot "videos" of terrorists a la Emmanuel Goldstein 1984. Taliban are sometimes "terrorists" and other times "freedom fighters" when the political policy requires them to appear as if they are "good guys" in a dictatorial foreign empire (they created but the U.S. will never admit to that).

If the CIA had so much involvement in both, you'd think they would use that information against the US. Wouldn't they want Americans to know their government's involvement in the situation? Wouldn't they have some undeniable proof?

edit; 'they' is the Taliban or Al Qaeda
