Too bad they dredged up this "credible information" from as far back as the year 2000, even before 9-11.

story.news.yahoo.com.../ap/20040803/ap_on_go_pr_wh/terror_threats_intelligence_6

The surveillance actions taken by the plotters were "originally done between 2000 and 2001, but were updated some were updated as recently as January of this year," Fran Townsend, the White House homeland security adviser, said Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show.

"And from what we know of al-Qaida's method ... they do them years in advance and then update them before they actually launch the attack," she said.

Haha, something stinks.

Do you think they are trying to devert our attention from something else?

something does not rest right with this - nor with any other of this terrorist stuff; never thought it did. Need to be careful who's arms you blindly run into for comfort and protection, it might just be the lare of the lion.

for anybody that does not know what a dictatorship looks like Crakeur just told us how it looks like, he is a New Yorker and he has seen first hand how people is been strip of their liberties in the name of protecting the high interest of big corporations, this government is not protecting us the people but the big financial institutions.

are you kidding me? I wasn't implying that this is a dictatorship. I was trying to convey, to those of you that think this is a phony alert, that this is real. I live a mere 2 minute walk from the citicorp building. My daughter is either at home, at a class a block away from the building or at a park that is about 5 blocks away. I'm glad they are doing what they are doing. If they wanted to strip search everyone on the block, I'd be fine with it. What many of you don't understand, since you don't have to live with this (admit it, topeka ain't in danger), is that many new yorkers accept the additional traffic, the searches, the long lines etc as a necessary evil. If this means they don't blow up a building and kill several thousand people, so be it.

As long as they don't discriminate in their searches, I could care less about my civil liberties. Local news channels showed many interviews with motorists stranded in bridge traffic. Not one of them was upset or bothered by the delays or searches.

Then you don't deserve those civil liberties. What do you mean "as long as they don't discriminate"?

if they search me, along with the others.

a judge ruled recently that it was a violation of our rights for the police to search people's bags outside of the Republican National Convention. So, in an effort to not upset a few people, they will potentially allow someone with a bag filled with explosives to hang out and detonate at the best possible moment.

I work a block from the Garden (out of town that week on a well planned vacation) and I'm appalled that a judge would do such a thing when the interest of saefty should be first and foremost. Now, if a bomb does go off in the crowd, who's to blame (along with the terrorist)? The local gov't wanted to do what's best but a way too liberal judge decided otherwise.

Now, I don't think we should all be under constant surveillance, nor should be we subjected to random searches, at all times. However, in a time of apparent danger, a little precaution that might allow someone to search your car or your bag or force you into a detour is absolutely fine.

If you don't agree, come here, rent an apartment near a potential site and enjoy the fun when the potential site becomes a real site and you are a block from the new ground zero. Then, when they have potential site number 3 you will understand why a little tightening on the freedoms we are allowed is not always a bad thing.

Crakeur,

I apologize, but I was not referring of you saying is a dictatorship that is my doing of the events you just describe, I take full responsibility of the reference.

But going back as the issue at hand, I don't agree as a necessary evil, yes I thinks is some issues about attacks but what I see is that behind the so call over security may have some hidden meaning that is stripping away our civil rights, yes Crakeur you welcome the security and I would also but how much of this security is boarding on civil rights violations and if somebody that for any mistake looks Arab with be accidentally kill for his looks and the so call high security.

Under the patriot act anything could be done under the label of war on terrorism, are we in war with terrorist or in war with the citizens of this country.?

sadly, I think some of those terrorists might be citizens.

Regarding racial profiling, which is what you are talking about, several years ago 60 minutes did a piece on racial profiling due to an issue near the Miami airport. Seems the cops were giving young black males, aged 18-30 a hard time. The cops said that witinesses of the rash of carjackings, robberies and murders that took place on the off ramp of the airport all gave the same descritpion: young black male, aged 18 to 30. the 60 minutes crew interviewed a bunch of african americans, who were all irate over this kind of treatment.

several years later, when arab men were being detained at airports and even being asked to leave flights, 60 minutes interviewed the same group of african americans.

Their response was simply "it makes sense to us now."

Thanks Jak- I heard late last night on the radio that Latest Terror alert is very old...years old.... HOW DOES THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION EXPLAIN THIS ONE???? They closed the Holland tunnel, main highways and main roads- Police are wearing war gear in the streets of New York and Washington DC- and it is just a lame Republican lie

Im waiting for the reply that explains and justifies this latest terror "alarm"

old intel that has been updated as recently as January. That means that for 3 or 4 years they have been watching several buildings.

It took them 8 years to plan and pull off the twin tower attacks.

So, we managed to catch them, possibly, in the middle of an attack and you think this is some big republican lie? better safe than sorry if you ask me.

Call it what you will, old intel that gets updated....If this isnt ridiculos. They came out and said they had NEW CREDIBLE INTELLIGENCE. They are just too dumb to flat out say: We're updating old intelligence, folks, and we must now watch out for this problem that could surface'. They are really stupid, because if they told the absolute TRUTH, people like me wouldnt be ranting about what liars they are.

This administration is truly laughable. REALLY, dont they offend your intelligence? They certainly offend mine

(ok, take it easy, breathe deeply...that's it....) Have a real good nite

today's news says that the intel was updated as recently as this spring. The fbi is currently monitoring al qaeda operatives in the manhattan area and NYC police commissioner Kelly said that some of the intel appears to have been "packaged." What, exactly, this means is beyond me. However, I don't take a cautious government as an insult to my intelligence.

It amazes me how many people (most are people living in completely safe areas) think this is a joke. Let's say, for the sake of this situation, that the intel was all over 3 years old. Let's say that they found it and did nothing and 4 years from now terrorists blow up the citicorp building. then a new commission finding shows that we knew about this "old" intel but ignored it because it was old. The country would be in an uproar.

The 9/11 attacks took EIGHT years to plan and pull off. We have learned that they plan for years. We have also learned that we didn't do enough with the information that we had prior to the attacks. So, now that we have some information, albeit a mix of old and new, you still think we should sit back and wait for it to happen?

You people amaze me. I will repeat my request. Come live 4 blocks from what has been deemed a very high potential target and tell me that you would prefer the cops and the anti-terror teams go home.

Truth is, the streets are less crowded due to the re-routing of trucks. It's a breeze getting around the city, so far as you aren't a commercial truck driver.

When terrorists blow up a building in your town, kill thousands, including your friends and/or family, you can then have an opinion on this. Until then, sit back at your monitors and pray that the terrorists don't blow up the local chuck E cheese.

Yep the U.S.A. = Police State - What else is new? You haven't noticed this before? It has been this Way since the "Bush Neo-Con" COUP of this Country's Government in November 2000. It has been this way Since the WTO/IMF/World Bank Protests in Seattle & Washington D.C. in 2000.

The "Government's" interest is no longer in the Citizens - but is these Huge Corporations & thier "Share Holders" & "Investors"!!! I Really don't think that this will change if John Kerry gets Elected - The Democrats talk as much Crap as the Republicans!!!

It amazes ME that you can actually be lied to, repeatedly and STILL say the government is not lying.

AS i said: They lied once more on Sunday. I know it, everybody knows it. They are conditioning people like you!!!!!

If you can say the government is doing the absolute correct thing, and they're trying to protect us, I feel sorry for you , because as a fellow American and human being I can see that they got you. I believe that mind control is not just something you hear about in an obscure talk show in the middle of the night. This is very real, and since Bush took over, the powers that be (daddy, Cheney, Conda, Rumsfeld et al.) have been practicing this soooo brilliantly. Infact, as much as I despise them, I will give whoever the brains of the operations is, much credit. This is unfolding before us like some horror movie, chapter by chapter... from 911, to black outs in the east coast, terror alerts, and more terror alerts....

Read about mind control. I know you will lash at me and say i dont know what im saying, well, please, save your speech.

If this crazy government has to, they will explode bombs across this country and blame it on the terrorists. Then call a police state, not have elections, and that's the beginning of the end.

My eyes are wide open in disbelief. MY INTELLIGENCE CONTINUES TO BE INSULTED.....

I don't know it if is a rule yet that any ATS thread longer than 5 pages will have one, but I sure feel like invoking a John Titor reference right now...

About the origins of the future Civil War: "You will be forced to ask yourself how many civil rights you will give up to feel safe. "

BINGO. There is hope for the Future after all!!! Let me ask everyone on this thread a Question: Were do you think the Majority of Americans get thier Information from? Why Television of-Course - You know the same medium that they use to shoot Commercials & Advertisements at you in
Rapid Intervals. The U.S. Government has had "Brainwashing" Operations going on Since the Early 1980's!!!

Your paranoid conspiracy doesn't work with me. I have seen first hand how much added protection has been put in place. Why bother with it here, where the state almost always goes to the democrats? It won't help. Better to pull a lie like that off in a swing state that can go either way.

Now, let's assume that the intel is old and dead and wasn't update a few months ago and emails to operatives in the area weren't uncovered. Let's say it is simply old intel that may OR MAY NOT be a dead end. I'd rather they get cautious and waste time and money than do nothing and waste lives.

While I might not be happy with the current administration, as long as they are doing whatever is necessary to ensure that my daughter, who is 4 blocks from Citicorp is as safe as she can possibly be, than I am happy with the increase in counter-terror measures. If it all turns out to be a waste of time, so be it.

don't feel sorry for me. "They" haven't done a thing to me. And please don't insult my intelligence with talk of mind control and brainwashing and conspiracies to blow up americans to get re-elected. Now go slip on your nikes, put that roll of quarters in your pocket, take a big gulp of the kool aid and wait for the mother ship.

Everything isn't a conspiracy.

Okay, let me explain how I come to my (rational) decision.

I'm going to trust the SAME American intelligence agencies that TOTALLY screwed up on September 11th (and for years before) to tell me ACCURATE INFORMATION?

I'm going to trust the CIA and the FBI after commission after commission has SLAMMED their total lack of credibility?

I'm going to trust the SAME agencies that said "Oh for SURE there are WMD's in Iraq, be AFRAID because they're capable of killing us ALL so we need to kill them first"?

I'm going to trust an Adminstration that has been PROVEN to have lied about many issues, when they give a VAGUE warning that ends up being years old?

I don't know about you, but if I trust someone who I KNOW is a liar, I would feel totally gullible when I realized what I was doing.

If this terrorist threat is SO HEINOUS that it warrants arbitrary searches and snarled traffic CITY-WIDE, then answer me this:

Why were they letting the First Lady visit Citicorp in New York two day ago with Governor Pataki and Mayor Bllomberg?

money.cnn.com...

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- First Lady Laura Bush, New York Governor George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the headquarters of Citicorp ( C) on Monday, a day after Homeland Security officials issued a terrorist alert for the financial company's offices, Cable News Network reported.

ok, so we should do what has been done in the past and wait for them to launch another round of attack. Great idea. Let's switch homes. I'm sure you live away from any targets.

I'd take more stock in your comments if you lived within a mile of a potential target. So, do you live near a target? If not, your opinions on how this city should be coping with the current situation are baseless and unnecessary.

Politicians always send a face into a crisis if it helps them in an election. Security is beefed up big time and they ensure safety. President Bush is coming to the RNC. It's a huge target. Should he and his family stay home to avoid potential terror?
