This is too much doom to comprehend even for me. And if a quake this size did even happen I'm sure it destroy a lot more on this planet than just Japan....

www.sott.net... phet-s-Blog-Sparks-Panic

Police in Taiwan are investigating a self-proclaimed prophet whose doomsday warnings on a blog have caused panic.

The man, identifying himself as Teacher Wang, said Taiwan would be struck by a magnitude-14 earthquake and 170m (560ft) high tsunami on 11 May.

More than 100 cargo containers have been bought and set up in a mountainous area of central Taiwan.

Police said they were investigating if the blogger had conspired with a container business to defraud people.

"Teacher Wang" suggested people live in such containers to survive the disaster, which he said would kill millions of people and split the island in half. ...................

so he's saying the world will explode? last time i checked there was no such thing as a magnitude 14 earthquake.

i have no words for this just LOL, not gonna happen

Im betting the police are investigating him because he knows something that the Japanese Government is trying to hide from the population.

He could have at least made his prediction more reasonable -
14 EQ isn't going to happen and if it did it would all be over so
fast we wouldn't know what hit us. He just wants to make a
mint on these containers (I wouldn't mind having one out back),
for when relatives visit

I suppose, in theory- it could happen? I don't know enough about the scale to make a determination- just that with every increase, the severity grows. Ie- the difference between an 8.1 from an 8.0 is much greater than 4.1 from 4.0. So a 14 would seem to destroy....a lot. It would be more powerful than a giant meteorite hitting the earth. Likelihood? Doubtful

I'm no expert, but as far as I know a 14.0 or anything even remotely close is unprecedented. I'm guessing that an earthquake that big would be felt world wide and cause worldwide tsunamis, volcanic activity and earthquakes (end of the world as we know it). There would be no place to hide, much less a cargo container up in the mountains.

Has teacher Wang accurately predicted anything?

A magnitude 14 quake, IMO, would cause a Tsunami much bigger than 500 feet.

My thoughts are that a Mag.14 earthquake would be complete annihilation. It's devastating enough to go through a mag 9. Maybe "teacher Wang" had a bad breakfast.

There isnt a single topic known to man that hasnt already been posted on ATS before...

Its probably why the search function exists.

A mag 14 EQ would affect that whole hemisphere in a rape-like way.
Not gonna happen.

Well theoretically you could go above 10, but its like a EF-5 tornado in that its so rare that you aren't going to be able to accurately compare it to what happens commonly, so you just have a figure for everything else.

My thought though was the amount of energy this would put off would be utterly destructive on a level never seen. The rule is that for every increase of 0.2 in magnitude you double the amount of energy released and progresses further along as being exponential. The strongest quake ever was in Chile measuring 9.6, which by this measure released 8 times more energy than the recent Japan earthquake of about 9.0.

So to do some extremely rough math here, we are talking about 5 magnitudes larger than the Japan quake (using it since it is the most recent in our minds), which gives us a power increase of 2 to the 25th power...so about 33 554 432 times more powerful than the recent major quake. That won't just destroy Japan, you'd likely have a global destruction event. Heck you'd likely set of aftershocks around the globe in the 9.0 range easy which are bad enough on their own.

I'd say this guy is overshooting the power levels a little, but even the Japanese authorities are saying there could be another 9.0+ quake soon after this last one so I won't dismiss the idea. I know it has been almost 2 months, but seismically, that doesn't even count as part of a second, so it could still happen.

Although if some of the theories I've seen going around are correct and Japan is collapsing in on itself... that could generate a 10+ earthquake I suppose, but we'd have to be talking about one heck of a fast failure of the island chain's geological structure to release that much energy.

Who came up with the title? The article clearly states Taiwan as the country to be destroyed by the predicted earthquake. Below is the only real mention of Japan found in the article you have linked to in your OP.

Officials say Japan's recent devastating quake and tsunami may have led fraudsters to exploit people's fears.

Here's a little explanation for how and why earthquakes are scaled the way they are scaled.

The magnitude of an earthquake is related to the length of the fault on which it occurs--the longer the fault rupture, the larger the earthquake. In order to have a magnitude 10.5 earthquake you would have to have a fault that circles the Earth - no such fault exists.

The largest earthquake ever recorded was a M(w) 9.5 on May 22, 1960 in Chile. This occurred on a fault that is almost 1,000 miles (1600 kilometers) long. The earthquake ruptured along the entire length of the fault.

The largest earthquake in the United States occurred in Alaska on March 27th, 1964 and was a magnitude M(w) 9.2. This earthquake ruptured 620 miles (1,000 km) of the Alaska-Aleutian fault megathrust, which is 2240 miles (3600 km) long.

For comparison, the San Andreas Fault is only 800 miles (1290 km) long. The longest rupture on the San Andreas Fault was 250 miles (400 km) during the 1906 earthquake.

Since a magnitude 14 has never happened, how can anyone have an opinion on what it would do?

That was my mistake sorry. Fixed.

Had Japan on the brain since they have already been ravaged once this year, but Taiwan isn't that far away from Japan so an event that large would certainly be felt there regadless.

No biggie...

Interesting on the 14.

Unimaginable!
