The article clearly identified it as a fish, not a whale. The fisherman, who "has never seen anything like it in his life", would certainly know the difference. The largest bony fish in the fossil record, Leedsichthys Problematicus, grew to about the same size. Remember the Coelacanth? It was thought to have gone extinct millions of years ago, until a fisherman caught one in the 1930's. I'm not saying its a living fossil...yet.

I mean come on, if this was a fish, why did they include a photo that doesn't help identify its fish characteristics? The few comments left on the article's page aren't helping sell the story either.

It's like they took one picture, and had to wait to get the film back to the lab before they found out it looked like a dead decaying whale carcase.. Should we end this one with the Scooby Doo ending??? Doodala dooo, doodala dooo, doodala dooo ....

A 55 feet long fish has been found in the seashore of Guangdong, China.

According to a local newspaper, the big fish weighs at least 10,000 pounds.

Hwang, a 66-years-old fisherman living in the near area, said he has never seen anything like this in his whole life and that the fish was tied with ropes when it was first found.

Many people have flocked to see this strange specimen since its discovery, although its rotting corpse already emits a foul smell.

The people living in the area think the fish was caught by some fisherman but was abandoned due to its heavy weight, hence the ropes.
Due to the serious decay of the fish's body, it is almost impossible to identify the species, according to the local newspaper. The fish was discovered on April 25th.

No way that thing is 55 feet long unless its really cold out there when they took that picture. In case you missed the first joke... maybe erect it's 55. But yea, looks like a whale, possibly just the blubbery weird part since that is most likely to remain and floats. Hence we do not recognize the pigment and skin. But it's not 55 feet for sure. Anyone ever wonder what whale steak would look like... it would sure be yaba daba doo style for sure. Eating things is cool.

Clearly a species of rorqual whale. The throat ridges give it away every time.

I dont thnk you do Khaaaaaan!! It gotta finish eating those dead carcases mixed in 2 .5 feet of oil sheet first.. So it can get energy!?!?

On topic that is a interesting find. If fisherman caught and released it it must not of been to far out of norm. Unless he just cut the net.

Ok this is an awesome post that made me lol at first, but now I am looking further into it. Nice to do research on things that arent 'smoke and mirrors, aliens and bigfoot' style news! Excellent post and a good find! Thank you.

This is clearly not a just a whale! Maybe its the bloated body of Osama after they dumped him into the ocean?
