Why exactly did it flow backwards after the big quake? Is there a chance the millions of tons of water will stress the new madrid fault zone?

There's not a chance, it's certain. That much water is HEAVY... it's for sure putting more stress on the whole area... the only question is... will this trigger another quake? Probably not...hopefully not.

OMG...what else is going to happen?

Historic quakes, historic tornados/storms and now 500 yr historic flooding.

I dunno about the rest of you, but I've witnessed enough historic events to last a lifetime now!

@Buttercookie: Hope you are not at risk of being flooded out! Stay safe. I live along the skagit river, in a raised house above the 100yr floor plain but would be in trouble for a 500.

For the comment about taking advantage of the flood insurance. What a horrible thing to say on this thread. You obviously don't understand how it works. If you are in a known flood plain, you pay a TON for your flood insurance. Where I am, if your house isn't raised it is over 2,000/yr for the insurance. The people that are going to be affected the most by this flooding are those that would never expect it and may not even be IN an area designated as a flood plain. This is an EPIC 500yr flood. Also, unfortunately when these types of floods happen it can sometimes be too fast to react, especially when a levee breaks as it has in my county before. When that happens, people lose everything and sometimes that includes their lives and pets. There is NOTHING to be gained by living in a flood plain. Please have a bit more tact for those at risk during this time.

Yes I am...They have maps on the news stations, but they are hard to understand.

They are expecting the flooding by tomorrow night, and said water will reach inside homes and businesses.

From Buttercookies link: CNN article

Illinois and Missouri have called out hundreds of National Guard soldiers to help evacuate communities and protect vacated communities

Engineers have reported sand boils and seepage at a number of levees near the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, a condition that Walsh said also threatens the integrity of the Mississippi River and Tributaries Project -- the world's largest flood control project.

"There is water in places where we have never ever seen it before," Walsh said.

Engineers have warned that should the rising waters of the Mississippi River overwhelm the entire flood control project, it could deluge cities, destroy crops, destroy businesses and paralyze river transportation

Why in the world isn't this all over the news? I mean, this is MAJOR!!! Almost like the earthquake swarm.

The LARGEST flood control system in the WORLD. Transportation on the Mississippi could be paralyzed! How much commerce moves up and down the mississippi river???? This alone will have an enormous impact on the whole country.

I just don't get it.

One of the most depressing songs I know is "When the Levee Breaks". I think this 1927 flood was one I had seen on a tv program 1927 Mississippi flood

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by what is happening. I couldn't believe when Nashville was flooded and received so little news coverage. This is heartbreaking.

Pictures of the aftermath of all the recent tornadoes looked like photos of the devastation caused by the Civil War battles. The flooding will likewise scour the earth. This is tragedy on an epic scale.

Reading about this flood
and knowing what the possible outcome might look/be like...

kinda reminds me of Edgar Cayce
and how he predicted that the Great Lakes would empty into the Gulf of Mexico...

Cos if this thing gets worse... it might just look like that...
