The United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II reportedly said Turkey should be kept out of the European Union for a “long time,” a British daily claimed.

www.todayszaman.com...

Now first off this article is going on hearsay, nevertheless I found it interesting. If what was quoted as having been said by the Queen is true what caught my eye is that she said "we don't want Turkey to come in for a long time"

My question is. Who is the "we" in question? The famous Royal 'We'. Herself and her husband? Was she referring to in her own mind of the attitude of Britain in general? According to the article in The Telegraph the UK is eager to have Turkey included in the European Union so who is this "we" that is not agreeing with that eagerness?

As with any monarchy the Queen's personal thoughts on politics should be kept to herself. She is though at the end of the day only human and surely has her own thoughts and ideas. To many on the outside she appears the happy little lady playing Queen, visits here, smiling, being nice to the underclasses, pleasant state visits there, always a nondescript normal life of your average monarch.

Having said that, the photograph in the Telegraph was a perfect moment to capture an even more perfect example of that old saying.

It takes a wise man to act the fool.

Or woman in this case.

Maybe she really loves Turkey. I don't see why any country would want to be part of the EU.

i wish she had said that to ireland before we joined.

but ya she has an opinion but that should be kept to herself imo!

wonder what her reason for that is if that statement is true!

Turkey in the EU? Hell NO!

They cannot even live in peace with a fellow NATO member (Greece) and they are still disputing the illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus by turkish forces.

Hell no - Turkey in my view is about as welcome to join the EU as a pork chop sandwhich in a mosque.

Firstly I would question the source for these alleged comments and everyone should read the source quoted by the OP.

The comment "We" should not be taken as the Queen talking for some New World Order but just a form of address used by our monarch.

And I have to ask as one poster has already. Why would Turkey want to join?

And if the United Kingdom is still in the EU, do we want even more local cost people coming to the UK?

That is why I said at the start of the post that it was going on hearsay. I just assumed that would be understood.

I believe I also suggested that as a possible reason.

She might have some say about Turkey joining the Commonwealth of Nations but I'm not sure what weight an unelected figurehead would actually have in an EU conference. Guess she's entilteld to her opinion just like everyone else
Also isn't Prince Philip from Greece ? , she might be biased

You also don't seem to know the power she really has.

Good for the Queen - what the hell does Europe need another 50 million Muslim colonisers for!

Or Rule Britiania Colonies?

Same could be said of the Brits in Turkey, Turkey doesn't need another 50 million British Expats.

Well yes he is Greek though I doubt very much that anything Philip could say would influence her in any way. He is merely a consort who had to give up both his royal ties to the Greek monarchy and religion to become Elizabeth's betrothed.

My father saw action in Cypus in 1955 as a paratrooper and according to him the hatred between the Greeks and Turkish was pretty fierce. On a completly off topic note Good old Prince Philip was there in a military role but had to be sent home as he was frequenting houses of ill repute - or so the rumour going around the army said. Totolly unsubstantiated but i thought your thread needed a bit of conspiracy thrown in

I had an in-law that was in a Scottish regiment stationed there when the Turkish decided to have another crack at the island in '74. His wife told an interesting story of looking out her window at the sight of parachutes floating down of the incoming tourists. I was there on holiday myself a few years back and went to Nicosia. Standing on what can only be described as a battlement I was casually looking over maybe a quarter mile of no mans land between the two when a polite guard advised me to keep my head down as 'the other side' were not adverse to taking the odd pot shot at overly nosy tourists. I have no idea how true that was but I didn't follow up on my plan to take a few snap shots.

On a side note, it was an excellent holiday. I went with a cousin and her family. Due to a small family dispute that had arisen the police arrived at the airport on our last day. A holiday to remember you might say. But I digress.

I wanted people to read your source. Too many people on ATS fail to read referenced source given and that is very important in this case as it clearly states the views of the people quoted as saying the Queen said the comments. It gives more context to the article.

You did give a comment on "We" and I wanted to add mine.

I don't have a problem with that at all Freedom. That is why I included the Telegraph along with the Turkish source. I'm well aware that the person who has made these claims could have her own agenda. This is surely a case of he said/she said. Believe me, I'm a critic myself of sources supplied by others and criticised a posters links this very day.

I wish some folks on here would check their facts before posting!

news.bbc.co.uk...

There is a clear agenda (part of the clash of civilizations garbage), to paint all muslims as the beligerents in any dispute, unwilling to listen to rational argument and debate. The subtext of all of this is, " war is the only option"!

Some very interesting comments made by those individuals quoted. I am by no stretch of the imagination well versed in the politics of that part of the world but I guess what get's my back up a lot is the popular impression of the bad guy for no other reason than he's the bad guy because you're told he is.
