this is sad as death. i can appreciate snake oil / charlatan cures being restricted, too much of that has gone on for too long. but legitimate vitamins, herbs and natural remedies have an important place in many peoples lives. i hope the best for our Euro friends in getting this ignorant, destructive ban overturned.

the USA is not far behind. there was a OP on ATS that mentioned an upcoming clamp-down on OTC drugs that do not substantiate their claims. we do have a lot of non-approved miracle pills that appear on TV commercials here, always have. hopefully when the Iron Fist is lowered in the States we will still be able to purchase legitimate vitamins and supplements.

I wish very much that people would become impassioned and decide to stand up to this blatant greed and oppression. But the powers that be seem to have a pretty steady grip on our social behaviour. It's like vegetarianism and animal welfare groups, tree protesters and countless other minority activists; those who 'make a fuss' or can be portrayed to be hindering or are at odds with the superlative importance of humankind's comfort and perceived progression, are ridiculed and therefore effectively outcast from the rest of society, leaving them devoid of any credibility or respect. And its method of control which we perpetuate ourselves. People are hard-wired to seek the safety and comfort of a large social group, where certain 'norms' are prevalent. When someone from outside that group comes along and expresses a sentiment that is at odds with these, the reaction is ridicule. By doing so you disassociate yourself from the dangerous minority and reinforce your position within the safety of the majority.

It's the same with this. People see modern medicine as the technological and scientific manifestation of the 'educated' and 'clever' man. The 'enlightened' is the group of people that everyone wants to be in. To dissociate yourself with it, means you're an outcast- a stupid nobody.

Luckily there are many who couldn't care less about what society thinks.

It is we who laugh at the sheep.

In America pharmaceuticals kill 100,000 people a year. Somehow I really really doubt herbal goods match that.

Do you know what this is like? It's like the government banning 3% alcohol because it's too dangerous and causes health risks, but selling you 40% spirits.

Government are just protecting big Pharma' profits. It's sickening.

You can read about it online - seems to me that this is just part of the actual implementation of something that has been documented and signed up to for a few years now.

We have modern medicines which can kill your liver, give you an addiction and even make you more likely to attempt suicide.
Where are the herbal side effects to match that? Headaches?
Herbal medicines are completely safe in comparison to modern medicines, with most of the side effects occouring only if you take the remedies before the second trimester of pregnancy.

How do these people honestly think people practiced medicine BEFORE big pharma? Is the general public really that stupid? Every stupid drug we ingest had to have come from something natural right in the beginning, and many beneficial effects have been linked with certain herbs and foods.

The same bill is going in America, which could make herbal practitioners class 1 felons.

SB 31 states that anyone who practices medicine or surgery without having been first “licensed and registered to do so” will be guilty of a Class I felony. Class I felonies in NC are the least severe kinds of felonies, but they do include things like burning crosses on private or public property, and sexually exploiting children. So if passed, SB 31 will essentially make those who practice alternative medicine without an official, state-sanctioned license and permit, criminals of the likes of sexual predators and cross burners.

Is DHEA included in the ban? What we have here is big pharmo showing that it can reach out and get rid of its competition, so in this case every politican who had a hand in the decision should be interviewed and on the record as to reasons why they did this. And how can the more progressive areas of the EU accept this without an outcry from its public officials, university personnel, and others. This is one of those issues which, if allowed to stand, will affect the human race from the get-go.

I know what you mean. That is the problem, not enough people are on ATS and sites like it. Only a few people know this is going on. 95% or more will know nothing about it until they go to buy something only then to learn it is now ban. And when you try to tell people about what is going on they just look at you like you have lost your mind. But then they are the same ones that scream"NO ONE TOLD ME!!!" or "HOW WAS I TO KNOW?" or "WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?". No one seems to care enough to even bother with what is going on now days. I do believe we are fighting a loosing battle because not enough people care to even know what is going on.

This is the scariest thing immaginable to me. If, or more likely when it comes to this over here in the states, I fear too many are already on one or more of Big Pharma's comply or die pills to put up a fight. Public safety is the end of us all. What a conundrum.

I don't understand whats the problem? Didn't you guys consistently vote for big government and state oriented solutions to every problem? Now you've granted the state jurisdiction over every detail of your medical treatments. All for the greater good of course. Just because the greater good is really for the greater good of big pharma shouldn't alarm you. After all socialistic concepts imply that big government is benign and always makes the best decisions for the masses. Just keep voting lefty and big government and everything will become a utopian paradise, just like Stalin said it would be.

I have signed the petition... Being from Australia I couldn't imagine that happening here, It's terrible that it should happen anywhere else.

The Codex is what entered my mind too; that system being placed was the "mothership" of this whole movement, and we've been building regional platforms in countries to accomodate it such as Bill C-36, Bill S-510.

They've been slowly banning herbs for use in Canada since the early '90's, trimming them yearly as to stay under the radar of mass concern. It's very hard to find a collective list, I wonder if anyone has managed?

Now we get to hear them lecture us with nonsense like this :

I would hate to think that those of us who "choose" to use natural remedies rather than "manufactured medicines" to obtain relief from our ailments will be forced to support the large pharmaceutical companies bottom line.

It's already hard enough to eat foods that are not laced with additives, preservatives, fillers and other ingredients that the normal person cannot even pronounce let alone explain what they are. And the truly sad thing is the foods that are best for us cost more than the 'highly processed' substitutes.

I know myself that a rheumatologist had me taking Mobicox for arthritis in my knees and wrists and when I complained that I was having stomach upsets from it he added another drug Pariat (sp) to counter the effects of the first drug. Well I took these medicines for a little over a year until the "Celebrex" side effects issue came into the MSM. I told my family doctor that I no longer wanted to be on these drugs and was quitting them, his comment was to try it and see how it goes. Well it has now been 5-6 years, and yes I still have days when my knees ache in the mornings and I use A535 like hand cream, but I would rather have some pain and rely on exercise to keep moving than depend on too many drugs and worry about interactions.

This same specialist wanted to inject cortisone into my shoulder to relieve the symptoms of a "frozen shoulder". An affliction that will eventually work itself out over time if you perform exercises to keep it moving and listen to your own limitations. For some who can't, or won't invest the time and effort , maybe that is an option--but not for me.

I guess if they can take away our herbal remedies, then they will begin to attack the massage therapists, physiotherapy and acupuncture/acupressure practitioners, faith healers, and nutritionists,etc. Next step would be to prevent those who use the power of thought to cease and desist thinking.

Sadly, from the Australian Food Safety Authority...

I know even in NZ we have an official Codex website so I know full well that there are lobbies and ngo's pushing it's agenda. It's only a matter of time before one of the main policies gets presented to parliament and everyone starts saying "wtf?!"
What about the TPP agreement? That's something scary both you and I should be able to relate to...
