M1a hands down.There is a reason they are still being used by our military.Ive used mine in 1000 yard competition at camp perry and was able to take fourth in the state.It is advisable to turn of auto cycle when shooting hot loads as you may eat the bolt.here is a site that makes a really good stock set up.

Really mate, you need to have another look at the FAL. You can get them for around the $1000 mark and they will shoot just fine.

FAL for $900

You say you want something in .308/7.62x51, semi automatic and will make hits out to 300yds. You don't want it for any serious competition, just for plinking and informal target. The FAL fits the bill just nicely. OK it generally doesn't get tricked out like the M1 or AR types, but you don't really need to. It can be great fun to shoot.
