They do this to shake some sense into people. Particularly intellectuals.

As opposed to the internet crack pots that believe in fairies and claim secret stars are going kill us all, these guys have real knowledge. They have the skills and access to data to have true credibility.

They aren't predicting anything. They are observing the reality of our behavior and suggesting that we are too careless, too violent and too ignorant as a species.

It is a plea for all of us to reconsider our priorities.
