I stopped watching the series several seasons ago.
The ridiculousness of it got way out of hand.

To answer your question regarding the cape issue... The writers have stated that in the series Smallville, the viewers will NEVER see Clark Kent as Superman.
There were rumors abound a few years ago that once they wrap up Smallville in this last season, they were going to start a new series called 'Metropolis' where we will see the transition to Superman.

And about the whole Lois and Kryptonite thing... How do the writers handle any issues like that?
Amnesia... The wonder condition that CONSTANTLY plagues Smallville citizens!

There have been a few episodes with Red Kryptonite. As far as the cape, he'll likely wear it by the end of the series, which is coming up real soon. As for being different......Different than what? The comics? I don't think I've ever seen a version of Superman that follows the comics exactly...Not even the comic books themselves!!! They've retconned so many parts of the Superman story over the years that it differs quite a bit from the original story. But even if they tried to follow the current continuity of the comic books, it wouldn't work all that well. For one thing it would be impossible. There is simply too much history to fit into the hour long episodes, not to mention it wouldn't all translate to TV as well. This is simply its own version of the Superman done in its own continuity. Its pretty much the only way it can be done. The only ones I've ever seen try to follow the comics exactly are the animated stories of Superman, but even those end up changing things from the comics most if not all of the time.

Don't get confused by the "S" it doesn't necessarily mean Superman, the symbol is his Kryptonian Family Crest. And sadly Smallville wraps up with it's final episode on May 13, 2011. Personally I liked how they introduced all of the characters including how Clark met Lex. I feel it added to the darkness of the relationship between them.
