I certainly don't always agree with your position on various topics, but I agree with you on this. But I suggest that the basic reason for idiotic threads and postings is indicative of an underlaying hysteria in the minds of many ATS members. They are desperate for something to believe in. Most of these hysterics are calling the average citizen "sheeple" when in effect, they are no better, the exact reverse. Rather than accepting the continual pab fed to the citizenry at large by TPTB and the MSM, they accept, in a virtual feeding frenzy of flags and star any alternative topic thrown to them simply because it goes beyond the old norm.

The problem is that UFOs, Disclosure, government and business corruption, asteroids, earthquakes, chemtrails, ancient civilizations, quantum physics, etc. have all dulled our senses about what has been alternative topics. They have worn themselves out in reasonable discussions but with few solid conclusions.

Basically, the lesser members are wanting entertainment to the extreme, the excitement, the chase! As the genre of science-fiction morphed into fantasy, so too has the typical, old alternative topics edged into flights of fantasy topics where there is no limits of science or critical thinking allowed by OPs or posters. --Bring on the latest vampire shows and absurd comet discussions!

Anyway, the ignorant masses want entertainment, not an education, and some of us are getting weary of fighting the battle.

Don't leave me Hugh

I do agree with what you are saying. I remember when I joined it was different, lately people just don't listen and think they are 100% correct no matter what anyone says that person is wrong.

I mean the killer dolphins and whales thread really killed me and was all over the boards. What a joke...Im open minded but NOT insane.

I have changed many of my views while being on ATS and that is because someone has shown me something I had not seen before.

One I will admit to is the Egyptians and the pyramids. I use to think aliens did it but I believe the Egyptians had their own way of building them

I sure hope the attitude on here all around changes...Sadly I don't read much on here anymore, people can't converse in an adult manner which makes me think there are a lot of kids on here who need to find another hobby.

When having discussions on topics recently, people seem to be taking information from more of a reactionary standpoint, then one of critical thought. Books, newspapers, magazines, t.v., cell phones, Internet/Web, Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, etc. are all forms of media that we use for information, whether or not it is true or factually based.
We all seem to be reliant on these forms, so much now, for our information that we take for granted what it is we are reading, seeing and ultimately believing.
I have seen threads, even on this site, that haven't one shred of truth to them that can be verified by source or science, yet many cling to these posts like god or aliens had come down and told them personally.

This is something that I didn't see here in 2005 and unfortunately has been getting worse and worse up to now. I see it as a social trend, I could see it at a deliberate attempt of disinformation, but in the end I see it as sad!

Wow..

It's those types of pathetic, nonsensical and unnecessary comments which really are starting to ruin this website for everyone else. And they're becoming more and more common throughout the main boards too.

By simply being here reading and posting, a person is challenging their beliefs. The bias crumbles in the face of truth. It takes the incredulity to see the fruit from the swing of the pendulum. On any given topic, the pendulum swings form one perspective to another. Neither perspective can be correct. This is the paradox of truth. For every truth, there is always a higher or lower truth. It's like temperature on a thermometer. Hot and cold are one thing--degree. Truth is one thing--in degree. God truth is split to infinity by degrees of opposites. Good evil; hot cold; high low; courage fear. Our understanding of NOUS (intellect) is bringing the degrees into the mean. Aristotle, The Doctrine of the Mean, is a good way to see this. Christ died for our sins to bring atonement to man. At-One-Ment. We cannot receive this apart form faith. Faith leads to hope, and hope leads to love. Love is the point. ATS is just one way to swing the pendulum of your mind from incredulity to truth. Bias is the thing to be eliminated, realizing that many perspectives make the whole.

I've had this suspicion for some time now, now of course this is a big generalisation...BUT... like most places the majority rules and the majority here on ATS aren't here to seek truth, or to challenge their beliefs, no they're here to validate their beliefs.

It's become a sad, scary fact that the majority here who sprout about their open mindedness are in fact closed minded and will not accept anything else besides their 'truth', and what better place to validate that?

Take this thread as an example, Inside info on comet Elenin (yes, you're being lied to), No substance, no facts and most likely lies and how many flags? 200+

Clearly this thread speaks to the majority I mention above so they flag the hell out of it because the OP validates their truths.

So the question begs...

Why won't people challenge their beliefs?

It's the very reason why I came to ATS, to challenge my beliefs, to see both sides of the story...you know being open minded?

So in closing, you're all a bunch of close minded sheep unwilling to leave your comfort zone.

And I'm over it.

I haven't been signed up long, did lurk for a while before, but is it just me or has this rash of silly topics and ardent adhering to a belief system in the face of obvious facts been accelerating lately.

Its a real shame, there have been some very interesting conversations, debates, but now its Monsters are in my Toilet, or if its something that is interesting it seems the mods close the thread.

Anyway, keep up the good fight, let out the occasional rant, and keep pushing simple facts out in the face of this c ridged clinging to belief.

You are a diamond and there is nothing to hope for.
The promised land is right here and right now.
It is not somewhere else or somewhen else.
It is eternally now.
Looking for more, wanting, will keep you in the dark.

Skeptics never change their mind and open them up to new ideas.
They are replaced by a new generation who do not consider the once preposterous and revolutionary "new ideas" as new any longer. The once revolutionary is accepted and the new generation comes up with it's own list of amazing and incredible claims that their peers just cannot possibly believe and vocally say so.
I enjoyed your post in the short time I have been a member. Pity for you to become discouraged.

Your clear lack of ability for mature, thoughtful, respectful debate and your repeated attempts at making others feel bad so you can apparently feel good about yourself, will certainly not be missed.

I'm all for "challenging beliefs", but does that include your tactics of baiting, or ridiculing others and constant cyber bullying? NO.

I'm sure you'll stay though (if only on another account) - there's far too much fodder for you to stroke your ego with here and feel superior putting down the younger kids who have yet to learn what it is to find a worthy conspiracy, or do their research properly.

Just in case though - bye-bye and good luck elsewhere.
We need maturity here, not egocentrics attacking people for missing marks or simply for being paranoid, because that behaviour just makes things worse and helps noone except you and your ego.

It truly is saddening that not everybody can control themselves and act appropriately, but this isn't a perfect world - you prove that well.

Meh, Chad sometimes you do make good points, other times your a bit rough on people. so that other thread has 200 flags, most people on this site love a conspiracy, that's why we come here. when he comes on saying we're being lied to, i have a source in NASA, etc. maybe he does, maybe he doesn't. its for everyone on here to decide how to take that information, i myself? his information about this is in the back of my mind, at this point whether ELEnin is real or not only time will tell.

if i wake up and find that the ISS is destroyed and everyone who was not surrounded by 4 steel walls, suddenly turned to red dust and leaving their clothes behind, well then he was right. if not, im not gonna waste the time and be mad and hurt that he deceived me

SOME skeptics are the ones that cause most problems as they jump into a thread and start a lot of trouble resulting in the thread going completely down hill. I can understand if some people do not wish to believe in certain types of things but seriously, to jump into a thread that you don't believe to just cause an hassle is beyond a joke.

being a skeptic as its good sides but being open minded as more in my opinion. I just went to a thread. I've seen so many threads lately where people have jumped into a well organised thread and instantly named it as a fake/hoax without backing up their claims which is the complete opposite to"denying ignorence" in my opinion.

To those that research and give a reason to why it is fake/hoax are extremely rate, well from what I've seen anyway. what"grinds my gears" is where it turns into personal insults when trying to get an answer to why they think it is fake/hoax/deluded

and I've seen you around a lot since I've joined ATS (still a noobie
) and it would be a shame to lose someome like you on this forum so don't think you're going anywhere

I agree. I was one of the first responses to that thread and I asked for any facts or updated trajectory because that wouldn't fly around here. I check back later on and over 79 flags! I check the next day and over 200 flags! I guess that does fly Round here. Just to put it out there. I did not flag it nor will I

Just a thought or 2:

I have been thinking more and more about this and believe that the well presented, thought out, researched threads tend to receive a lot of 'chatter' all over the map. Flames, De-Bunkers, Trolls etc. Seems like they line up for it.

Maybe take this as a sign that you are on the right track? Take it as a compliment that they feel a need to spew their crap. If it didn't hit home to a little truth, no one really reacts.

One more thought on your post.

We are all of a certain level of intelligence. Some more than others. Some with more education, experience, backgrounds etc. So while one person may know for a fact that a thread was not well researched for fact, it may have been done to that poster's ability.

In other words, their intention wasn't to post crap, just that they honestly don't know how to research and fully believe they are on to the truth. I can't fault people for this scenario.

Then again, some people really are the buttwipes you speak of.

Anyways, good post and keep up the good fight!

There is a lot of mental illness and ignorance here. Getting disgusted with zealots and idiots is futile. Most people coming here look at many of the posts as a joke. That doesn't mean there aren't nuggets of interesting information in the morass of jibberring monkey posts.

I do agree with most of what you wrote, I will say this though: the vocal minority (posters) do over- shadow the silent majority (lurkers) on ATS. Don't forget that there are far more people reading and exploring, then who are actively posting.

You of all people know that this site has just experienced a massive intake of members, the majority of which are fresh off the boat of MSM education which makes people lean to certain extremes be it for or against a particular topic.

Being a new member....and definately "fresh off the boat" I would say that overall I have benefited greatly from the interactions I have had directly or indirectly on ATS. My Dad always said " I'm smart enough to know, I don't know much" a point already touched on in this thread by another member. The information provided by others on a variety of subjects that interest me keeps me up all night reading till I can't keep my eyes open, I rarely watch television anymore and have changed and/or modified my behavior as a result of newfound "truths" that resonate for me.
I find myself defending the "sheeples" as the average person seems to be refered to here often. I can only say it's hard and intimidating, and possibly dangerous to question the status quo. I certainly have experienced reluctance and outright hostility when attempting to discuss "conspiracy theories" with friends and family. Interestingly it's the younger members of my family who take me aside to discuss subjects that have been deemed inappropriate for dinner conversation. Having said that, I Love these people, and really all people, we're beatifully flawed.
ATS has given me an outlet to explore, learn and express......and to formulate what ACTIONS and contributions I am supposed to be making given my level of understanding and circumstances. I did take the IQ test posted in another thread and it seems mine is lower than the other members that shared their results. I quess what I lack in intellect will have to be compensated for with heart.
Anyways.....hang in there, be patient with us newbies, most of us mean well and sincerly want to learn and grow. It certainly is refreshing to participate in discussions that don't end up with "what are you wearing".....

Well said.

IMHO the Wickus is a good contributing member around these parts, and it'd be a shame if he left.

Chad...there are many of us who know how to separate the facts from fiction, and the good informative threads from the bat sh&t crazy ones. You've defined yourself a role here at ATS, and its a much needed one at that. Please do keep on keepin' on.

Ahhh, i can feel the old guard slipping away, mostly because they do not seem to realize that alot of people are not going to blindly listen to their mainstream answers anymore.

We cannot verify what you believe as "truth" Chad anymore than you can debunk what others do.. on many issues.

What I do know is, i am completely open-minded and do not buy this crap that you are "done with it".

Face the realization that many are sick and tired of no exploration of space, and are sick beyond belief of listening to ANYTHING mainstream, and want to entertain ourselves with something more interesting.

LOL@ getting mad over flags and stars...maybe Digg would be a better place, i left there because of all the people that cried that no conspiracies exist.

This is an enjoyable place, some of us explore very deep things in our minds and souls, and this site is like a halfway house for me....no matter where i am coming from
