Ah well see that is the real problem... where to live... Everywhere in the world there is an issue of some sort, whether earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, hurricanes, land slides, tornado allies, nuke plants going into meltdown... etc etc...

Let me see now. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

Maybe the issue here is that the Guinness might be flat? A bit too much rain perhaps?

I will try and find something that is an issue.

There are places in the world that don't really have issues, but we don't have enough room for everyone!

Arkansas didn't really have to worry about earthquakes... but the oil companies fixed that little snafu

So your in the UK... wait till that Gulf Stream cools down from polar ice melt and drops the next mini ice age on you... then you will want to move here to Las Vegas... but I hear from my sources that they have explosives placed in the passes... in case of emergency

Reminds me of the poem and podcast I did long ago about

Finding A Place

To all the people of the land
Hear ye, hear ye, best you can
Know of storms, quakes and floods
Fireous mountains that erupt in blood

Why I ask remain you there?
You know the threat, yet still you dare
To tempt fate, to tempt trouble
Be not buried in the rubble

Heed the warnings, heed the pain
Save yourselves or die again
Find a place known to be quiet
Go there soon and avoid the riots

Don’t come cryin if you are stricken
Don’t come cryin and start your bitchin
You knew the risks and still you chose
To tempt your fate and ignore those
Who gave the warnings loud and clear
So don’t come cryin on these deaf ears

You on the coasts know of the ocean
You near the faults know of the motion
You near the mountains of fiery doom
Save yourselves and do it soon

Or watch in silence as bodies clear
Watch in horror as lives dissapear
It’s your own damn fault for tempting fate
I shall not bear the brunt of your terrible weight

Heed the alerts, heed the news
Save yourselves and change your views
Find a place free from trouble
Go there soon or be in the rubble

Don’t come cryin if you are stricken
Don’t come cryin and start your bitchin
You knew the risks and still you chose
To tempt your fate and ignore those
Who gave the warnings loud and clear
So don’t come cryin on these deaf ears

Don't laugh. I was stricken with some weird urge to write the poem and record it, medieval style... ok ok, laugh! Kinda funny, but man...A point to consider. People going to keep tempting fate, I don't wanna hear it when all hell breaks loose.

No Ireland it says on the left hand panel.

Nothing would induce me to move to Las Vegas. I don't like warm weather anyway so freezing cold suits me fine.

Scanned the past few days, didn't find this news video warning Hawthorne residents:

Okay, now that is just completely awesome. Poetry is my thang (especially the Brits), and your style reminds me a bit of Robert Browning. And the recording of your performance is extra cool. Thank you for sharing! You rock, TA.

Hey thanks sofi for posting that. I find it EXTREMELY curious that no mention was made in that video at all that it was NOT volcanic activity- as stated by the USGS! And the USGS was involved in that video! They prefaced it with that stupid movie, VOLCANO? Wow. Ok, wtf is going on here? That must be a case of total fearmongering from the media to even give those impressions to the public in the face of the USGS saying that this activity in Hawthorn is NOT volcanic. HA! Betcha THAT news organization won't get another interview for a while with the USGS...

Either that, or the USGS is lying through their teeth to avoid panic. I just don't see it. If that turns out to be true I will never EVER trust another scientist again, and I will do my damnest to cut them to shreds every chance I get. Jeez.

I'd say I'm speechless, but I guess I already spoke.

@dalloway:

Thanks. I'm actually just your boring old musician from way back, who took a wrong turn at Yellowstone and decided to take on seismology as a hobby.
As you can see, it is not working out too well. But neither did music, so anyone got any more bright ideas?

Maybe they're afraid the EQ activity will trigger eruptions?

Maybe they're covering all the angles? ...Cuz they really don't know what to expect?

45 seconds into the video he says what sounds like "north crater", and it's non explosive in nature. That just means it's not rich in silica, but more basaltic in nature. I'm not sure exactly where this north crater is, but the entire region is peppered with different mixtures of minerals. Most are rich in silicates, and those do lead to the explosive type of eruptions that he didn't seem to want to talk about in the video. en.wikipedia.org...

sofi, I really have no clue on this one. It would appear to be volcanic related to me. Tell me, does this look like normal faulting activity to you? Is there a main shock/aftershock sequence? NO!

www.seismo.unr.edu...

That is from today 4-25-11.

I mean that is a pretty serious sequence, spread out over a large area. There are multiple swarms now all over the place in a wide general area, way beyond what is shown in that pic. Including one at Mono Lake, where there is a known magma chamber under there.

Something isn't adding up, and I am still totally confused on the video you posted versus what the USGS has now stated in the update.

The decreasing depths of these quakes SW of Hawthorne now is most definitely something to note:
www.seismo.unr.edu...

Click on the "Broadcast of earthquakes" tab.

And looks like I am not the only one concerned. Notice that all quakes recently have been updated, no matter the magnitude. That is breaking from the norm, where previously only the bigger ones were getting updated with any kind of regularity. Now they are ALL updated, and LOOK at some of those depths! 0.0 km, after review. I mean you could take a hammer drill and literally drill down to the hypocenters!
Ok, maybe not, but you get the point!

So again. WHAT is happening here if this is NOT volcanic activity?

With what PuterMan showed, they have been steadily getting closer to the surface on average since the swarm started. And now they are literally like right there at the surface. USGS, we need answers please, not deflection.

And just now another 4.3 occurred, on the north end of the swarm, indicating new ruptures occurring:

Okay, like TA....I am a bit speechless about this one (regarding the linked news video). Completely conflicting messages here. Was this a hack job by the editing crew at the news station who just doesn't know crap or is there, as the interview suggest, some major shista going down out there????

Ta, myself and several others have either started threads on this or included it in broader thoughts about what is going on with the West Coast and Midwest right now.

TA..did you catch that sentence where it sounded like he said ; "It might be more of a FORCE 5 type problem". (right about the 1:16 mark) Is he referring to a V5? Is this an unintentional slip confirming thier suspicion of a volcanic event??????

Why else would the federal government have set up a EOC near the 'event' and put everyone on alert? Most definately something to be keeping a VERY close eye on. The implications are huge. As you (and others) have pointed out; this swarm might not be in a known recent volcanic spot but there are several HUGE, dangersous areas very near to it. How much would it take to set them off? If I am even close in my suspicouns (voiced on my putting it together thread) than I wouldn't doubt that they are taking this very seriously. I'm sorry, but I haven't been reading this whole thread, but I am wondering if you have been discussing the other rash of quakes across California in regards to the Hawthorne swarm? I think there are bigger implications.....

The 4.3 just now certainly got my attention!

No, I didn't feel it, but I'm under 200 miles away, so if there is any volcanic activity or a building to something larger, I'm definitely monitoring the situation. Every time it looks like the swarm is dying down, it picks up again.

Does anyone know if this has been the largest of the latest swarm?

So here is a map I posted on my putting it together thread a week or so ago, highlighting where I think the cascadian subduction zone may extend:

Here is a current snap shot of the us EQ map from USGS. I have taken the liberty of tracing the same line on it. Notice how the quakes match up?

wc, I'm pretty sure he said "It might be more of a forest fire type problem". Listen closely.

But that makes even LESS sense. WTF does this have to do with forest fires? :shk:

Baffling, to say the least.

And btw, I've got most of the pertinent NN stations up on GEE, and they are indeed starting to come in fast and furious again, micro swarm in progress NOW.

Also to answer the other question, the biggest event in sequence so far has been a 4.6.

WOW - I can't believe I just now have made the connection.

Westcoast - do you by any chance remember this thread I made a few months ago? If not do you mind reading the first post and letting me know your thoughts? These comments apparently come from a USGS whisteblower who was silenced on the LA times for sharing sensitive data regarding the true nature of the San Andreas fault and a massive rupture is imminent:
