Department of Justice Takes Action to Disable International Botnet

www.justice.gov

WASHINGTON - Today the Department of Justice and FBI announced the filing of a civil complaint, the execution of criminal seizure warrants, and the issuance of a temporary restraining order as part of the most complete and comprehensive enforcement action ever taken by U.S authorities to disable an international botnet.

The botnet is a network of hundreds of thousands of computers infected with a malicious software program known as Coreflood, which installs itself by exploiting...

Quite an interesting read if you ask me.

"Botnet's", reminds me of a nosey snooper, but it's a virus.

I cannot stand hackers and crackers (criminal hackers).

Quote from : Wikipedia : Botnet

A botnet is a collection of infected computers or bots that have been taken over by hacker (also known as bot herders) and are used to perform malicious task or function.

A computer becomes a bot when it downloads an illegal file or an email attachment that have bot software embedded in them.

A botnet is considered a botnet if the botnet is taking action on the client itself via IRC channels without the hackers having to login to the clients computer.

A botnet consists of many threats into one.

The typical botnet contains of a bot server (usually an IRC server) and one or more botclients.

Typically an easy way to exploit useless security systems.

There are far easier, and more honorable ways to gain information, and some information is classified, whether we want it to be or not for the safety of our nation against foreign powers and or foreign espionage.

While I certainly have issues with foreign and domestic policy, it is because I know the policy forwards and backwards, and do not need what equals out to be an Internet "cheat-code", a means to cheat to get ahead.

If we expect our Government to be better we cannot use mailicious tactics to find out the lies they tell and sell us, instead using intelligence, cross-referenced with books, and experience.

46 urgent and critacal updates were held back from windows update over the last few weeks
and they have been deployed to fight the bot scurge
some of the infection vectors have been plugged and malware tools are being deployed
to remove the bots
this follows on from the domain name randomized dns lookup that looks for random domain names
that "pop" up for the bots to interact with.
this will flush the bots from many a computer
it seems the authorities got info from domain regristars for "wack a mole" style bot nets
this is good news for home users but bad for botters

Could be.

I can't believe it took them 4 years to arrest these people, They knew in Jan. 07 what was going on and who was doing it. They ripped the NY Stock Echange apart. They were doing Worldwide Insider Trading. Munipulating stocks in large companies in order to bring them all down. I had about decided the government was in on it, because they never arrested any of them. Well, better late than never.

They knew and did nothing because "they" are a gigantic bureaucracy that requires the active participation of tens of thousands of people, including expert "committees," posturing autocrats, celebrity clown politicians, self-serving legal organizations, and most importantly consultants; fighting a small group of individual experts who are very likely to be conducting a 'true tactical e-war.'

Actually, the Stock Market, and ruthless people trading in it do a lot of that themselves.

It's called a "bubble in the market" where manipulation forces it to crash.

That particular element has nothing to do with hackers/crackers or this story.

Unless you've got some news pointing specifically to that.

Amazon Review :

Where does money come from?

Where does it go?

Who makes it?

The money magicians' secrets are unveiled.

We get a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, their pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money.

A dry and boring subject?

Just wait!

You'll be hooked in five minutes.

Reads like a detective story — which it really is.

But it's all true.

This book is about the most blatant scam of all history.

It's all here: the cause of wars, boom-bust cycles, inflation, depression, prosperity.

Creature from Jekyll Island will change the way you view the world, politics, and money.

Your world view will definitely change.

You'll never trust a politician again — or a banker.

One of many such books on Wall Street and the Federal Reserve.

Not to mention I dabble on E*Trade myself.

Now, back on topic, please.

Insider trading and Government manipulation of the Security and Exchange Commission is a part of it.

This story is by far not the entire story nor is all a botnet issue.

Someone is covering their crooked asses just as much as being attacked.

Agreed.

A huge waste of bureaucracy that takes far too long to do anything.

Although I do not agree with the "tactical e-war" or their methods at all.

That is the exact type of fight the Government wants.

One they can win with enough resources and man-hours on their side.

If someone wants to win something like this, this isn't the way to do it, it will never happen.

Possibly coolottie is going off of other information with forgetting to supply it.

Not sure but I addressed that as well.

The Stock Market is easily manipulated by the corporate sharks swimming in dirty water.

Organizations like the Russell Trust Foundation or Skull and Bones are corporate raiders.

The modern "pirate" is the corporate pirate.

Well, Jan. 2007, my computer became bot, I went to my spam box to delete it and opened one, It had an image with a message in it white letters on black, saying to buy stock in this company. So I go to this companies website and they have a big notice on there that they just got kicked off of the NY Exchange. I got the phone number and called and spoke to the VP. He said they got kicked off because someone sent thousands of emails all over the world saying to buy their stock.. So I faxed him a copy of one. He also told me the FBI was threatening to charge him with insider trading. I tracked down the person the email came from and she turned out to be the VP of a big bank in the UK. My spam box had about 300 emails in just one day. I checked my history and there were all kind of sites I never went to. So I called the local FBI and told them and gave permission to hack into my computer. I mean if I could findout who they were back then I am sure they could. Many of them were in the US. I kept waiting to hear they arrested them but never did. When they arrested the guy in NY for this pyramid scam or whatever. I knew he didn't do all that. He might have been doing something wrong but not this. I left my computer on all the time. At about 4 am my computer would just start going all over the place all by itself. I am glad they caught them. I also think they robbed the banks.
Well, I am glad they got them.

Okay, so you had a real life experience, but that is not all a botnet issue.

Online security is a large part of the problem by your own admission.

Leaving your computer on 24/7 has a lot to do with that and it is like leaving cash on the counter.

And most likely you opened a file, or downloaded a picture, or something.

Viruses can be hidden in innocent files and pictures.

Which is how the virus you had spread from computer to computer.

A virus is just as damaging as a botnet and both are tools of crackers.

A "Cracker" is a criminal hacker and they utilize botnet's.

"Bubbles" are not illegal and "manipulations that crash them" are prefectly legal market actions. I think what the other poster was talking about is software manipulation of Stock Market, not financial.

Good story SKL.

So what about looking deeper into which a/v protection programs are able to catch this Coreflood virus? Does anyone know which ones offer protection against it? Does Kaspersky IS (the one I highly recommend, although after this, I dunno?) So far so good though, and no money missing from the bank account.

Particularly troubling was that the virus was able to interrupt an online banking session to funnel funds to an offshore account.

That's why at this point, we would be best served by people rampant searching for more info on which a/v programs are best suited to kill this thing. Let's get to work ATS.

Would that be like the insider trading before 9/11 where we are so dumb that we forget to ask what wsa the result of the investigations or was the money all worthless electronic digits just like the FED is using and people wonder why life savings have become worthless.

The terrorsts are on walls-street and controlled by the zionists and untill the public removes this cancer the economy will contunue to go backwards.

if you hate bankers then buy silver and see them burn.

Of course "bubbles" are not illegal.

I never suggested they were illegal.

It is the manipulations which created them which cause concern.

Just like the side effects of drugs are not illegal.

But people still die due to those medical side effects like people go broke from the monetary side effects.

It is by far all of the above but not linked to one specific cause.

Market fluctuations happen on a daily basis.

The Justice Department just happens to be going after this botnet and blaming it.

Meanwhile, people like Maddoff, and others scheme to get rich quick off of other people.

Is it just the botnet or is this something much bigger and that is being exposed?

Remember, the men who control the money, make a profit off of our profits and losses.
