Radiation from Japan has been detected in drinking water in 13 more American cities, and cesium-137 has been found in American milk—in Montpelier, Vermont—for the first time since the Japan nuclear disaster began, according to data released by the Environmental Protection Agency late Friday.

Drinking Water

Radioactive Iodine-131 was found in drinking water samples from 13 cities. Those cities are listed below, with the amount of Iodine-131 in picocuries per liter. The EPA’s maximum contaminant level for Iodine-131 in drinking water is 3 picocuries per liter.

Oak Ridge, TN collected 3/28: 0.63
Oak Ridge, TN collected at three sites 3/29: 0.28, 0.20, 0.18
Chatanooga, TN collected 3/28: 1.6
Helena, MT collected 3/28: 0.18
Columbia, PA collected 3/29: 0.20
Cincinatti, OH collected 3/28: 0.13
Pittsburgh, PA collected 3/28: 0.36
East Liverpool, OH collected 3/30: 0.42
Painesville, OH collected 3/29: 0.43
Denver, CO collected 3/30: 0.17
Detroit, MI collected 3/31: 0.28
Trenton, NJ collected 3/31: 0.38
Waretown, NJ collected 3/31: 0.38
Muscle Shoals, AL collected 3/31: 0.16

I find it strange that the media reports (certainly in the UK) have all dried up now. No mention now of the disaster at all, and definitely nothing regarding the radiation. It all seems a little hushed up, nothing to see here, move along.

The link also has the radioactive readings for the air, too.
That was chilling to me.

Well, I live just north of metro Detroit. Looks like it's time to break out the two-year old water bottles my grandmother keeps in her basement. _javascript:icon('

Thanks for posting. As suspected it's levels have been proven all over the US, because my family on the east coast also said it's hushed in the news there as other places. Around here they are not talking about the percentages found in the milk, yesturday's news and most people shrugged it off. The fallout has spread all over the world and it should not be ignored.

Question for anyone who knows...
Is the 3.0 unit maximum allowable an overall amassing of all radioactive isotopes permissable in the sample, or is it specific to each one? For example, does the EPA consider a sample with 2.8 units of Iodine 131 and 2,9 units of cesium below the limit, or do they consider it to be 5.7 total and, thus, over the limit? Do the different isotopes effect the same biological processes & organs, or does each one strike a different part of the anatomy?

Can someone explain what happened with the readings in Ft Wayne, Indiana?

I would imagine it was an offline recalibration, but I don't know for sure.

It says anything above 3.0 is in violation of health codes & considered dangerous to drink & they also don't add the numbers together. They measure individually. It is very specific for each one. They say that below 3.0 won't cause any health problems, to which I disagree. Any radiation will have some type of consequence & unfortunately we won't know who was effected until 30 or 50 years!! & different Isotopes effect the body differently. Take for instants Radioactive Iodine. It effects the thyroid glands. There are other radiations that effect the skin or your sight. I'm not an expert on this type of situation, tho! Just going from what I recall from high school Chemistry.

I would suggest not buying it, but if it's a life necessity...

I recall a news item on TV saying the availability of the iPhone 4 & the iPad, as well as parts for certain cars produced in Japan, will be limited because of the tsunami & the radiation.

if its packaged stuff like in cans I wouldn't stop buying it just yet, they probably have a bit of stock still to go through before anything contaminated is going in I would imagine
