As the title says, are you really happy with what you do and what you believe?
when I say "happy" I do not mean the momentary kind of happy, but an overall happiness, the kind of happiness that makes you feel life is worth living every single second.

You don't have to answer this question, this is for you only, if you want you can lie to me or everyone else here, I'm not trying to prove a point, but please, no matter what you say, don't lie to yourself.

One of the rules i live by and always have has been that I have to be able to look myself in the mirror every morning and be happy with what I see.(no I don't mean vanity)
I have no problem with what I see every morning.

No one is truly happy all of the time not even people who read fictional stories to make them believe they are better than others and are going to a better place than us infidels/athiests/non believers/realists/ etc

I am happy.

Happiness is a choice.

If you put conditions upon happiness, you will never be happy.
Those conditions may not be met one day. Sure they could be met today, but one day, they will dissolve and what then?

My happiness is unconditional. I am happy just because. No real reasons.

If I were to start looking for real reasons you know what would happen? I would find nothing but reasons to be unhappy!

So you gotta just make sure that it is unconditional otherwise it is not stable or solid.

But however, I am not in any groups or follow any group doctrines. I am solo here. I do not like to categorize myself in conjunction with human organizations.

You are thinking about the wrong kind of happiness, the momentary one, I'm asking about the overall happiness

Noooooo im talking about happiness in general. How can a religious person be truly happy given what they believe?
If your not happy with every aspect of your life you cant be happy

I have to disagree, I am happy because whenever something bad happens, whenever I feel bad, there is always something, it can be almost nothing, but its always enough to make me smile, even for a second, but thats all need

By what you think happiness is, I'm comfortable saying that you are not happy. Happiness is not something you get like love or a crush, is not something you can search for, it is something that happens when you achieve certain state of mind, it can be natural, like a poster above said, or it can be intentionally achieved, like I do.
The best advice to be happy I can give you, is: be happy, there is no other way, just be happy.

No im not happy you are right. Too many bad things going on in the world that i cant help but fell un happy about. If i buried my head in the sand and did what i wanted 100% of the time then yea i would be happy most of the time but as thats never going to happen i have to live with the small bit of happiness ive got

You may have a bit of happiness as do i and most people....but no one is happy all of the time and if they are then there must be something wrong with them ( on lithium/drugs or mentally ill ).

Your question was whether people were always happy.....they cant be otherwise the world would be a much nicer place.

There is a difference between bliss and happiness,

that most cannot tell the difference to.

I am happy because I feel like I am standing on top of the world among a very small percentage of the population. It feels almost surreal to walk out my door and to realize that nearly every person that I see will NEVER know the things that I know. That my mind soaks up knowledge and information like a sponge. I have NO stop or block preventing me from exploring any avenue. Every piece of data becomes my belief. Every piece of knowledge adds to me and makes me more powerful. Most people find a single book or a single belief and hit it like a brick wall and are never capable of getting their mind around it. They spend their entire lives reading the same passages over and over and repeating the same phrases over and over. I feel sad for them but I cannot lie about how happy it makes me to know that I have surpassed them and many others.

What if you have no beliefs? How would I answer as an atheist? And PS there is knowledge far above mere happiness which when I look at it is rather mundane.

Peace

Good OP

PS Did you know asking yourself if you are happy or not happy produces the same reactions in the subconscious while the same applies to asking are you sad or not sad. If you ask yourself are you sad or happy which ever answer is provided by your subconscious will be reinforced by the answering of the question like a vicious or virtuous loop.

quote No one is truly happy all of the time not even...

How do you know this? What if I showed you someone who was, even one person would prove this incorrect. I think its possible to be happy all the time according to the idea of happiness stated in the OP (ie not getting too lost in the meaning of the exact words). I would say certain Buddhists would qualify it is a big world after all.

And really fleshing out your answer, I still feel its not right because even with all the terrible things that happen in the world it has to be understood that happiness exists within us and is a state created by the brain, to give an extreme example that I TRY to follow from the Buddha, even if an enemy were to cut off your legs it is correct to feel only forgiveness and love to that person, as I said I try to live this. It's like do you allow outside forces to influence your internal state and I believe some people don't.

Peace

I recently converted to Catholicism (from being a Baptist)... I felt as though I had this huge void in my life and thought it was a lack of faith. Well that void is still there. I am very unhappy. I am a single mother, but I run my own business which is pretty darn successful. So that should make me happy. My kids are smart and healthy, so that should make me happy. I live in a beautiful city. I have a nice car. A great home. I have wonderful friends and family that are close. And yet I am as miserable as it gets. It's funny that this thread was posted today because today is the first time I've thought about getting some professional help.

Lol, well, I get what you're saying here and I wasn't going to respond at all, but I have to ask, why does it sound like you're specifically targeting people who believe in something greater and saying they truly aren't happy?

I could ask you the same thing. Does your belief (or lack thereof?) make you happy? Are you happy with how your life is?

I want to be completely honest - Life can be both bad and good, when the bad happens, do I dwell on it and sulk for weeks or months at a time? No. When the good happens.. I cherish it. The good happens just as much as the bad, for me. I can honestly say that yes, I am happy. Things may not always go my way or how I planned it.. but for some reason, something terrible would happen.. but something amazingly wonderful in greater power would happen soon after. It's a rollercoaster of life.

And I love rollercoasters.

What makes you think atheists don't have beliefs? We have beliefs. They're just not the same beliefs as religious people.

Sorry to hear that, but remember something, money is BY NO MEANS a way to happiness, I've lived in places where people is really really poor, where kids sometimes didn't had food to eat, but you could see they where happy, because that was their life, their own little world, and they didn't need nothing more.

Sorry if the OP is bad redacted, but belief is not the same as religion, an Atheist believes that there is no god, that doesn't mean they don't believe anything.
And yes, I am happy, thats one of the reasons why I posted this, to help others to be happy too.
