Softbank Corp. announced Sunday that President Masayoshi Son will personally donate ¥10 billion to support victims of the March 11 earthquake and help fund the recovery of the quake-hit Tohoku region. Son will also donate all his earnings until retirement to support orphans, including those who lost their parents in the earthquake and tsunami..

As an American I find this amazing. I know of hedge fund managers who would walk over dead bodies laying in the street to pick up a $10 bill to spend on themselves.

I was complaining in another post about the lack of fuel that was keeping food from getting to the people in outlaying areas- that not one petroleum company stepped up to the plate to offer assistance. And that transportation systems (busses) were charging people (who didn't even have a house left) full price for getting transport to a shelter.

Thank goodness for people like Mr. Son. Another story of a real human being willing to step up to the plate. He makes other billionaires look like the greedheads they are.

People like him give me more faith than 1000 HAARP induced EQs with alien lazers could ever take away.

Kinda renews your hope for people, huh? I wish all the worlds wealthy would give something like this. I know many have charities, but many also dont put very much of their own money and resources into it.

It is this type of story/action that keeps hope alive for humanity.

The sad part is that not only will he probably stand alone on this, but he will likely be looked down upon by most of his peers for helping the 'little people' instead of trying to exploit the disaster for personal gain.

It is refreshing to see that at least some people understand that 'rich' doesn't trump 'human' in every case.

Thanks for sharing this.

I imagine he will probably anger 'some' of those type people too- for making them look bad or for pressuring them, by his philanthropy alone, to actually give up some of their wealth to assist the devastated people.
We need something uplifting. By this act this man is giving to more people than he can imagine.

Good on Him say i!
Of course unlike the poor widow i doubt he gave all he had...but it is a grand gesture and very much needed to get help to the ones who need it most.Maybe with thi example, some of the other money bags will spring with a little cash too.
There are so many charity deductions to be signed over to the poor people over there.....and all tax free....
Lets all take advantage of that and send what we can spare and even a little we really cant spare for these people who are currently out in the cold of a long winter.
pring looks still a ways away weather wise for them.
They are going to need a loty of fresh foods and vegetables till their own agriculture gets sorted out.
As they eat lots of sea food as well, this part of their diet may suffer the worst restrictions of all.....
We will need all the cash we can raise to feed these people and help decontaminate their land over the next decade.

It's also interesting to see only one Japanese golfer donating money while the other rich little boys that are making millions in the USA for playing a game (mostly baseball) have not done anything.
Hum what has Matsui or Ichiro doing?
Oh wait they need all their money just to get by and pay off their million dollar mansions and toys.
If every athlete including all pro sports were to give just 1% of their earnings it would make a huge difference but the little babies are too busy crying about million dollar contracts for doing a job that doesn't even require a 75% success rate on the field, hell baseball you can have a 20% success rate at bat and still demand millions of dollars (Mark Texiera for one among many others).
It's time to boycott sports altogether and make them realize they need to give back to society and help when needed and not just take and take with no conscious.
Just my opinion and i use to be a sports nut but tired of the overpaid little babies always crying that they need more to survive while the ones that pay their every insatiable appetite for more money sacrifice many things just to be able to take their family to one game.
Not to mention the owners or bankers of the world that could care less about the world in which they live in.
The ironic thing is that all these people truly believe it is not their problem and will not affect or have an adverse affect on their lives or the future of their children.
Sometimes i wonder if we were put here to see if we are worthy of enriching the universe and being an asset to future generations or like before needing to be wiped out before the Human 'Disease is able to spread throughout the universe but this time no more chances as we used up our last mulligan (for the golfers) or last get out of jail free card and as cruel as it may seem it is necessary to wipe out this disease and eliminate this threat to the future of the universe once and for all.

Could it be that he knows the impending doom that is heading our way in 2012 and is putting on a show until then. I just find it hard to believe this elitist is doing this out of the kindness of his heart. There has to be something in it for him to be doing this.

Remember, what you give comes back 10 fold. Mr. Son will be one of the wealthiest humans in Japan. Try filling your soul up with kindness........much better than desire, envy, pride or greed!

The wealthy donate whatever to charities, which skim their cut off the top leaving even less for the victims of destruction. Tax Write off's are given for such donations This is how GREED shows it's ugly head...and unfortunately it is becoming common practice. Richie Rich gets kudos for being such a caring person...and it's nothing but hippocracy.

A man with a heart and a conscious will unselfishly give to those in need, this is the humanity in man...this is love for fellow man...and it gives me the warm and fuzzies that someone out there appears to truly care. Lets hope it catches on
with the elite that it's cool to be "real".

People in general when it comes down to it are "good". I think that for the most part people do not recognize this because they have been taken advantage of at some point. It doesn't help listening to the "terrible times" MSM.

The media promotes the idea that it is a dangerous world full of monsters out to get you and that you need to lend your power to the "competent and friendly" corporate governments who "make it safe". So safe so that you can drink soda/beer and eat pizza while watching morally questionable content on TV. Don't worry though, they only just make it scary enough so that you remain an observer, not pull your money from banks or exit the stock market.

Government interests and corporate interests are not interested in the peoples interests. This man recognized that and took immediate action unlike the self interested entities mentioned prior; the ones that will pass the accountability around and create inquiries that result in nothing. BP spill, Katrina are great examples, does anyone even see any progress in Haiti for all the money raised for there?

I just hope this man oversees his investment back in society because the System in all the modern day countries know only one thing, failure. It is what they do succeed at consistently.

That's $118 Million dollars.
Props to the guy, but I don't think this is as unusual among the extremely wealthy as most would have us believe.

Yea, nice of him I would guess even though like said in a earlier post he should have given starving people money sooner. Hell, his bank has stolen much more than this I would imagine... For him to give this amount I image he is good at heart and it may bother him that banks and the Federal reserve steal trillion for the poor.....All rich people, with Multi-millions and Billions should help the poor. What in the hell can someone do with 100 million dollars??? They need to help the truly needy..But, this is just my opinion and something I would do even if I just had 1 million I would do all I could to help others who had nothing at all...

Look at what this guy did
Look at the posts here that still find an excuse to criticize him
And one poster even suggested if he had given everything he had or ever would have he still would have been wrong to have had it in the first place.
Is it just me or does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

I think that in this day and age its sooooo easy to get caught up in the depressing stories we hear on a daily basis. Hope, to many, seems to be a most foolish notion.

Then you hear something like this. One single act by one single man. An act of absolute love. Not love of ones self but love of everyone and everything. We CAN change the world we live in. We stand on the precipice (in my mind) of a time when we can see our dreams fully realized. This world truly is what we make of it.
