This is just bad. The situation is so grim now that they are dumping the "lesser" of two evils into the sea. It appears that the Japanese government has allowed TEPCO to dump stored contaminated water into the sea because it is only 100x legal limits. This is so they can store stuff 10,000x legal limits in those tanks. Never to fear though, it shouldn't really affect much according to the TEPCO and Gov't officials.

TOKYO -- The operator of Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant began releasing about 11,500 tons of radioactive water into the sea today evening so that it could make room in storage tanks for even more severely contaminated water. Some 10,000 tons of the water being released into the ocean was being taken from a communal storage facility near the No. 4 reactor. Another 1,500 tons was being released from the vicinity of the No. 5 and 6 reactors

Mneh. Really, I am speechless. There isn't a word in any language that can vouch for the amount of stupidity in these situations.

Hmmmm forget seafood for awhile...sounds a little familiar doesn't it?

Wonder what the next big event that destroys a large section of the ocean will be...

Yea, This is going to be the end of Pacific sea food for a while. It will disperse since the Pacific is so large but the fishing areas off the east coast of Japan are going to be no-fish land. The sediment will undoubtedly pick up these radioactive materials and then it will work its way up the food chain and the higher fish will become concentrators. Everyone keeps downplaying the iodine 131 which I don't completely understand. Sure it has a half-life of 8 days but it is only 3% of the total products produced by nuclear fission. So, if there is that much I-131 there is a lot more of the other nasty stuff.

Idiots.

Im assuming they had no other option. but this seems like the dumbest thing anyone has ever done.

Here's a question...

What are they going to do when the tanks are full again?

It's not like the problem has been fixed and this is the last of the contaminated water that will come out of there.

In Japanese it would be something like, "Teme ga SU-GEH BAKA"

It is sad to see. I lived outside of Tokyo for a long time. I used to surf in the waters off Chiba. I have been through Iwate prefecture; never really stopped though, it is just a bunch of farmland. But it was pretty. I remember the last incident, '99 I think, where someone was mixing nuclear fuel in some sort of 5 gallon bucket and irradiated the whole place. The Japanese covered that up real good. Since I lived there and saw that cover-up I know this one is covering up just as much, if not more.

Just look at what we have found out so far: plutonium in the soil, some sort of massive leak in the tunnels venting extremely radioactive water into the ocean, dumping of contaminated water into the ocean, the unbelievable stories when the reactors were exploding that is was no big deal, etc.. and so on.

I still fail to understand why they didn't just bury these things right from the start. I have looked around just a bit and I can't seem to find any example where anyone was ever able to stop a nuclear meltdown and save the reactor. They always end up dumping sand and cement on the thing to stop fission and prevent further leakage of radiation. of course, this is always after the owning company spent way too long trying to salvage the reactor and contaminating everything.

Exacta-mundo.

Next the water in the tunnels will be 1,000,000x normal so dumping stuff that is 10,000x normal is no big deal. And so on and so forth.

I can't help but wonder just how bad this thing is going to get. The rabbit hole just keeps getting deeper.

I know, I just saw this as well. They really have no respect for the sea. Killing dolphins and whales on such a large scale. And now this. This is going to bite them in the butt. Maybe it might cause one of there worse fears. GODZILLA. I do feel sorry for the the local people there.

The problem is the Japanese "honor" system.

It is all about saving face. Lying, cheating, stealing, whatever is A-OK as long as it saves face. Now, if you get caught, well then you bow profusely and apologize so dramatically that spittle flies all over the place. This is the stuff we Americans get to see on TV and think, "Wow, what a bunch of great and honorable people". What we never understood is that they were apologizing for getting caught.

This same "saving face" honor system will not allow them to ask for help. There is a saying in Japan, I can't remember the Japanese words, but it basically means "public face / private face". It actually is more of a saying but literally a part of the culture. Always put on a good show in public is basically what it means. Only lose your cool in private but never let them see you sweat. Until, that is, it is time to bow profusely and spit all over the place while saying "GO-MEN-A-SAI".

I don't wish anyone any problems but it is this "honor" system that is one of the main reasons I left Japan. A lot of Japan is great but after a good number of years the lying really really really gets on your nerves.

we will reap what we sow... bad as this waste disposal is, its not like all of the rest of the worlds 442 nuclear reactors waste goes nowhere, all of this waste is ruining our mountains, streams, farmlands, cities, oceans, all of it. we must look within ourselves and ponder the impossibly long period of time that our collective actions will continue to take its toll on our pretty blue planet. in the end all reactors will cease to be, and all of this waste will have to be somewhere if not everywhere...

Radiation Can Cause "Bizarre Mutations"

Once in seawater, radiation can hurt ocean animals in several ways—by killing them outright, creating "bizarre mutations" in their offspring ........

Where what is going, the water? Well, like a vid I saw on another thread (if someone can find it that would be great) this engineer was saying you can't dump X number of tons of water in these reactors every day, it is going someplace. A lot is going into the air but the rest is going into the ground and the ocean.

If you mean where is this going in the future? Who knows. It could go so bad so fast we won't know what hit us or it could slowly eat away at life on earth as the various contaminants from this spread around the globe for the next 200k years. Lots more cancer.

i don't why they at least wouldn't try to fill an empty oil tanker and have a few more at there disposal, at least this would give us some more time to creatively deal with this problem?

Those ships are expensive, it's cheaper to just dump it all into the ocean.

That's the whole problem here, they want to fix this but don't want to actually have to spend some of thier profits to do it.

In the long run, dumping into the ocean means that down the road they can sell counter measures to deal with the problems that arise.

Win/Win situation as long as you have no soul.

The lesser of two evils indeed...
.. all I can say is im glad I only have 40-50yrs left on this planet, assuming nothing unforeseen occurs.

Although, it does make me question the concept of bringing kids into the world.
