Japan's Nuclear Rescuers: 'Inevitable Some of Them May Die Within Weeks'

By Dominic Di-Natale

Published March 31, 2011
| FoxNews.com

Workers at the disaster-stricken Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan say they expect to die from radiation sickness as a result of their efforts to bring the reactors under control, the mother of one of the men tells Fox News.

The so-called Fukushima 50, the team of brave plant workers struggling to prevent a meltdown to four reactors critically damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, are being repeatedly exposed to dangerously high radioactive levels as they attempt to bring vital cooling systems back online.

Oh I love them, I'm sure they could easily be the fukushima 20,000 though, why only 50?

How brave is it to keep the truth form the public and even family members just because the company has asked you to? Bravery can be confused with stupidity. I think it is the latter at this point. But I am sure they still have plenty of foolish pride the Japanese seem to be filled with it.

they will make a movie about them soon. I don't think nuclear power is the answer after this reminder.

God bless them!

Technically, it's only 50 at a time. There's about 200 of them at the moment on site. The "fifty" term stuck.

IMHO, I stated at some point I'd bet you lose about 500 of them before it's over, given the way you'll have to worm around in the debris to get to the reactor vessels, and I still think that's probably about right. Maybe more if you have guys taking one for the team in the drywell of reactor 2.

That is just so awful and sad! It shows that nuclear power is seriously a bad idea!

Lets not make broad sweeping statements like nuclear power is bad. There are lots of good uses for it. Learn a little before you cast it out as "bad". Most plants are PWRs, not like the BWRs that are having trouble in fukushima. Go do some googling/wiki-ing, Vicky.

They could be the modern version of the 47 Ronin, brave and willing to keep fighting to right the honor of their people, and in death know that they restored that honor and saved face.

Because that is Japanese, or to me as I see it, the tradition of their ancestors is still strong enough to compel them to such lengths, that they have already sacrificed them selves to the cause.

Personally, would not expect less from any nation or it's people, the right one's will not think twice about it.

Japanese officials consider cell transplants for nuclear workers

March 31, 2011
Source: UK Guardian

Japanese authorities are considering plans to collect and freeze cells from engineers and water cannon operators at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in case they are exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.

The proposal has been drawn up as a precautionary measure that could potentially save the lives of workers if they receive high doses of radiation while battling to bring the damaged nuclear reactors under control...

This whole thing's harrowing. As much as my head says the plans described in this article are good - although they'd better 'consider' bloody quickly - my heart feels the men might as well be lab rats.

God/ess bless their souls.

I don't know whether they are stupid or brave ... or both! But, be as it may, they have balls, depleted uranium balls. I wish them the best.

They are low level workers..

And whats wrong with having pride?

If American's took honest pride in the things they did we would have never gotten to such poor circumstances with our economy.

At least these guys man up, and do their job to the end, for a mess they didn't predict and didn't cause.

Reality check.

These workers have already received lethal doses before they were even given a choice. Very few of them even were issued dosimeters. TEPCO warned

Secondly, many of them are being forced to stay. They are not allowed to contact their families, use cell phones, or leave the plant. Bad conditions

I don't want to take anything away from the sacrifice that is being forced on them, but if you know you are going to die, might as well "resign" yourself to being a "hero". The real criminals here are the TEPCO execs condeming these men and families to death before they had a chance to volunteer for it! I wonder how many of them would have knowing they were facing certain death.

I just hope that TEPCO will pay the medical bills, radioactive waste 'burial' costs, and death benefits to the families. Many of these workers are low paid "nuclear gypsies" and have long paid the price of doing the "dirty work" for the nuclear industry. Nuclear Gypsies

Reality and Truth Check.

When the Tsunami came, the workers could have just ran like everyone else and no one will blame them. Every human life is precious. But they stayed.

When radiation leakage was detected, they could have just escaped, and get compensation from the company, with the belief that Nuke energy is safe, as it had been legally binded to do so. But they stayed, exposing themselves to even higher dangerous levels.

They stayed because they are aware of their responsibilities that are outside of their job scope, and that is to protect their loved ones, the nation and the world, or at least attempted to do so without giving up.

Low level or mid level workers such as engineers, they stayed, beyond monetary compensations or medical benefits, even knowing how shortened or medically tortured their lives will be. This is courage beyond human belief and capability.

The only ones who fled, as usual, were the high level workers - the management,'experts' and bosses, as usual. May one day our children rise up against them for their duplicities and lies, exposing our fellow humans to danger for profit and whom are the ones who always go scott free.
