two galaxies are dancing over to collison XD. this will help what's going to happen in millions of years when the milky way and the andromeda galaxy are going to collide. NGC 6872 and IC 4970 are dancing untill they bump into each other haha. www.universetoday.com...

I feel bad for any civilizations that exist in those galaxies.
I can't imagine the forces at work in an event like that.

I wonder how intense it will be when those galactic centers come in contact.
Awesome photograph, thanks for sharing.

that would suck if there was any earth like planets in either of those galaxies.

This is more HAHA

Point of the video being that there really isn't that much danger in galaxy collisions, including the impending collision between our Milky Way and Andromeda.

Hell, there's even debate as to whether or not Sol (our sun) originated in the Milky Way, or is part of the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy being consumed by the Milky Way now.

including the impending collision between our Milky Way and Andromeda

impending huh? not happening anytime soon actually it is supposed to happen in 3-5 billion years

other then your choice of words great post on your part

I think it will be a couple of billion years until the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies begin to merge, it wont kill you, the stars are very far apart in space. Here's an image of our very own Milky Way consuming several dwarf galaxies as we orbit.

If massive black holes are the center of galaxies, then the larger Andromeda black hole would win the battle of supremacy over our Milky Way's, if such is the case and the galaxies exist that long. I'm not sure we have indications that galaxies exist long enough for the epic collision to fully form a new larger galaxy between us, but who knows. You're only in trouble when you approach the event horizon, and we are more than half the way away from ours, if massive black holes are the center of spiral galaxies.

The Discovery Channel's 'Bad Astronomy' (now) web blog by Phil Plait has a good explanation of how our sun cannot be from the dwarf galaxy Sagittarius because of the elemental makeup differences in the stars native of the two galaxies.

I've seen radio telescope pictures, of other galaxy's colliding together; and it looks like a very violent event; indeed. Theory has it, that one center of galaxy black hole, would absorb the other center of galaxy black hole sometime during the collision.

actually because of the vast amount of space between the stars in the two colliding galaxies the only real danger would be if you were in very close to the center of the galaxy when andromeda and the milky way collide scientist believe that where our position is in the galaxy we wont even know it is happening

Without intervention, by the time that the two galaxies collide, the surface of the Earth will have already become far too hot for liquid water to exist, ending all terrestrial life, which is currently estimated to occur in about 1 billion years due to gradually increasing warmth of the Sun.[9][10]

it will be visable to planet earth from the naked eye and the closer it gets i believe you will be able to see it and it would be a spectacular sight to see but sadly no one will be around to witness this everything comes to an end at some point and sadly our time will come before we get to ever see this

www.youtube.com... watch this. scientist can move earth's orbit with an asteroid and and all that stuff than maybe we can see the andromeda galaxy depending if it happens to survive the sun.

i thought you would like this alex1 the two galaxies that you posted here well the smaller one if the size of the milky way so in a way this is actually what it could look like when the andromeda and the milky way eventually merge

Go to a remote location, you can see the Milky Way. If you are still around when it gets close enough, you will see it, spectacularly so you will see it!

Beautiful Astronomy Picture of the Day isn't it.
